Films I’m looking forward to in 2010
Oct 18th

CLASH OF THE TITANS
Directed by Louis Leterrier. With Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Gemma Arterton and Sam Worthington as Perseus. A remake of the 1981 film version of the myth of Perseus and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster in order to save the Princess Andromeda. In the film, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.
Release date: March 26, 2010
I’m not really a big fan of remakes but I’m really looking forward to this, the cast is looks great and the original is a classic that could do with a modern remake.

SHUTTER ISLAND
Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley and Jackie Earle Haly. In 1954, US Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) hunts down a murderess who’s escaped from the Shutter Island hospital for the criminally insane. Though she can’t get off the island, Daniels’ job is made harder by an approaching hurricane.
Release date: February 19, 2010
I’ve been looking forward to this ever since it was announced in 2008. Martin Scorsese for me and most mentally abled people is one of the top 5 directors of all time, he’s made classic after classic. The only thing that makes me slightly sceptical about the film is that it was due to be released this October but has now been given a Febuary 2010 release, this kinda showed that Paramount don’t have much confidence for it’s Oscar appeal. The Oscars themselves for me are a joke though it’s all down to movie making insider studio politics so you never know

TREE OF LIFE
Directed by Terrence Mallick and starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. The tale of a Midwestern boy’s journey from the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as a “lost soul in the modern world”, and into his quest to regain meaning in life.
Release Date: TBD
Terrence Mallick is my personal favorite director of all time, his films say so much without much words, they’re all extremely philisophical, moveing and visually stunning. Since his debut film Badlands in 1973 he has only made 3 other films which were all amazing (Days Of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The New World). The premise of this looks real good, very little information has been leaked about it.

THE FIGHTER
Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Mark Wahlberg and Directed by David O. Russell. The film centers around the life of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his older drug addicted brother Dickie Eklund (Bale). Amy Adams has also been confirmed as a love interest of Ward.
Release Date: TBD
This might be the film Christian Bale finally get’s his Oscar nomination! Both him and Mark Wahlberg don’t look like their messing around with their respected rolls, Bale has lost a tonne of weight to play an addict (as he done in Rescue Dawn and more extremely in The Machinist) and Mark Wahlberg has beefed up to play the Welterweight Micky Ward

INCEPTION
Inception takes place in a world where people can enter other people’s dreams. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a CEO type, who illegally dives into dreams to extract information. He does this via a portable device, which is basically an injection into the bloodstream. In one scene, Cobb’s team enters a person’s dream while on an airplane.
The team who creates the dreams is comprised of Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Eames (Tom Hardy) and Ariadne (Ellen Page), a young college student who is considered the “architect.”
This is a must see for me. great cast, great director (Christopher Nolan) and the trailers got me hyped. I can’t see this going wrong

AMAZING TALES: THREE GUNS
Amazing Tales: Three Guns is an upcoming 2009 film directed by Zhang Yimou. Zhang’s first film since Curse of the Golden Flower in 2006, Three Guns is a remake of Blood Simple, the 1985 debut of the Coen brothers, whose films Zhang Yimou lists among his favorites. The film transports the original film’s plot from a town in Texas, to a noodle shop in a small town in the Chinese desert.
Three Guns will reportedly consist of two distinct segments, a thriller segment, and a comedic segment. The film will star Sun Honglei, Ni Dahong in the thriller segment while comedians Xiao Shenyang and Yan Ni will star in the comedic segment.
I love Blood Simple and I love the idea of putting a twist on that story. Zhang Zimou is one of my favorite modern directors. Visually he’s on a different level. A number of his films blew me away - House Of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, Hero, Not One Less, The Story Of Qui Ju……
HONORABLE MENTIONS: IRON MAN 2, TOY STORY 3 (PIXAR ARE ON A ROLL), LEGION, CENTURION (STARRING NOEL CLARKE, DOMINIC WEST AND MICHAEL FASSBENDER), THE BOOK OF ELI, MR NICE,JONAH HEX,PREDATORS,TRON LEGACY

George Clooney, Bill Murray and Wes Anderson Interview
Oct 17th

On the opening day of the BFI London Film Festival I attended a very entertaining press conference for Wes Anderson`s Fantastic Mr Fox. In attendence were George Clooney, Wes Anderson Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzmen, Eric Anderson, Wally Wolodarsky and Jarvis Cocker. Below is the majority of the press conference, I excluded all the tabloidy questions like `George does this film make you broody`, quite a few of the press seemed to be more interested in George Clooney having children than the actual film!
Earlier in the day I attended the press screening of Fantastic Mr Fox and was really impressed, it`s alot of fun, it`s one of them rare animated films that adults can enjoy just as much as a child. Fantastic Mr Fox is Wes Anderson`s first animated film, utilizing classic stop motion techniques to tell the story of the best selling children`s book by Roald Dahl. Check out the trailer below
What is the appeal for you with Roald Dahl`s story telling and characters?
George Clooney: I just showed up for the paycheck (laughs), it`s been a well known book for a long period of time now, it was not only an opportunity to work on the story but also to work with Wes so I was excited about the whole process, it was a very different process to what people usually have with working on an animated film, we were out in the middle of nowhere running around and doing sound effects, the whole process was exciting. That wasn`t an interesting answer I apologise.
(Laughs) Wes what brought you to the project and why did you particulary choose this style of animation in stop motion?
Wes Anderson: This was the first book I actually owned, it was a book I loved as a child and it introduced me to Roald Dahl`s work in general, it made a big impression on me. About 10 years ago I apporached Liccy, Roald`s wife and asked permission to do it, so it`s been a long process with this project, I always intended it to be stop motion, I`ve always wanted to do a stop motion film, especially with animals and fur, I love that odd but magical look. Dahl is quite anarchic and the movie is a bit of a Robin Hood movie, it`s a bit communist.
Bill Murray: Or English (Laughs)
Wes Anderson: There`s a French stop motion film called Le Roman De Renard that was a great influence on us.

What are your thoughts on your character Mr Fox, as a Fox?
George Clooney: (Laughs) For me he`s an optimist and was a fun character to play, I remember reading the script and telling Wes I love it, I was real excited to do it, I wasn`t sure if people would see it because it`s not really a kids movie or a grown up movie, Wes said don`t worry about it let`s go make a movie and have some fun, thats a great way of approaching a film. Working with Wes and these guys was great, I didn`t enjoy working with Bill Murrey though.
Bill Murray: Thanks George
George Clooney: (Laughs) I`ve let go of some of the anger, we seem to get along now though
What is the moral lesson for this film?
George Clooney: Stealing is good, we applied that I think. I don`t even know
Wes Anderson: It`s a celebration of stealing yeah
Eric Anderson: To be true to your animal nature
George Clooney: That`s it let`s start again, it`s to be true to your animal nature.
Did working on this film make you want to do more animated films?
George Clooney: In fairness the actors only worked for a few days on the farm, running around and playing in barnes and fields, Wes spent a year and a half to two years, in some ways us being up here is a little silly it was Wes doing the real job. I would certainly do this again, it was a incredibally fun experience for all of us.
Wes Anderson: One thing I learnt, is that with the actors and their voices they give so much to the animators, we recorded the voices first, the animators spend all this time on the puppets but their inspiration is the moments these actors had. Stop motion is in my arsenal now.
Jason Shwartzman: I loved being apart of this movie, running around digging dirt, growling, it was so much fun, I can`t even tell you how much fun it was working with everyone, it`s weird to say but when your working with someone you admire, you can`t stare at them and take it in, but because there`s no cameras rolling. It was nice to work and to watch, it sounds odd but that`s what I really loved.
Liccy Dahl says that Roald was a wonderful man to live with until the few weeks before his books would come out he becomes really grumpy and stressed, can you relate to that?
Bill Murray: I was with her yesterday and she made me feel that way too (laughs), she brings out the fear in you, she seems ok but he`s dead now so he`s safe, she can`t do him any damage now, he seemed like a great guy and she rubbed him up pretty bad, whatever happened in their household should stay there.
We saw where they lived, she`s quite a person, they had a great life together and she`s so devoted to him even now, so I`m sure in that moment it must have been hard for her to think I can`t do nothing for you now, it`s an anxiety no person can help you with. She`s a wonderful wonderful women and if I was to re-marry I`d take her.
Your known for your improvisational skills does working with animation help or hinder that?
Bill Murray: It`s really to do with the Director and the actors you`re working with, the worse the script the more you improvise, it`s as simple as that, whether you`re a Doctor, a Badger or a House Wife, if the scripts lousy you`ll see more improv, especially if your a house wife.
Roald Dahl seemed to like scaring children, did you want to have a similar effect?
Wes Anderson: As a kid I remember being scared with his books, I loved that. We didn`t try to make it darker, we wanted to keep it as dark though, while we were writing the script our goal was to imagine how Dahl would have expanded the book into a movie, that was our ideal.
What were the difficulties and positives to making an animation film as opposed to a live action film?
Wes Anderson: The big adjustment you make with making an animation film to a live action film is that you film much slower, but what I enjoyed about that is it meant we could have so many opportunity`s on working on different aspects of the production and refine them, you could find more things that are funny or connect to the story. The fact that it was slowed down so radically introduced more opportunity. What animators provide is very serious and interesting they take a list of the frames of the film and they have instructions to every single frame but two different animators will interpret those instructions very differently, their personality comes into it, that was a suprise.
I shot this film the same way I would shoot a live action movie, I enjoyed doing it that way, people who are used to working on a animated movie were a bit thrown off by that at first, but we found a way of making it work and I enjoyed it that way.
Bill Murrey: This film couldn`t have been made anywhere else in the world but London, one of the most exciting days I`ve had in the film business was the day I spent at The Three Mills Studios there`s more talent in one little factory than any other single place I`ve been, I`ve never been with so many talented people in one place. They do more things with sets, designs, models, than Americans can dream about, we can put a man on the moon but we couldn`t have made this movie. That to me is a celebration to all the people who worked on this film. They`re fun after work too, I wanna make a special point of saying that (Laughs)

Idris Elba Interview and Takers Trailer
Oct 11th

Check out my quick interview with one of the nicest and most talented men in the film industry – Idris Elba
A lot of your acting roles have been very diverse from a Marine, to a devoted single father, to a Drug Kingpin and even Stringer Bell – was very different to your role as a drug lord in American Gangster how do you pick your roles is it on purpose that there so diverse?
Idris Elba: Yeah definitely I want to smash out as many sides of who I am, acting is definitely an extension of your personality, you definitely have to have your idiosyncrasies when you learn your lines but you have to bring your own personality to the character. Honestly Matthew in the last five years I’ve realized I’ve got so many different personality’s I think I’ve got a disorder in my head (laughs), it’s hard to squeeze all these personality’s into one character so with every role I get a chance to show something different so I’ve definitely been lucky to not just play one stereotype character to pay the bills.
Yeah especially with the Stringer Bell character being so big did you get a lot of offers for similar roles?
Idris Elba: Yeah continuously, people want to see you play the same thing, just like if you’re a musician if you put out a banging hip hop album then next you go on a rock tip your probably gonna lose your audience but if you show your officially diverse in everyway I think people will go with you.
So how was it like working with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe two of the biggest actors of the last two decades?
Idris Elba: I didn’t actually work with Russell you know. Denzel’s intense, definitely intense. I haven’t really said this to anyone before but with Denzel when your working with someone at that level he’s at you just bring you’re A game, you’ll fall on your face if your nervous, you have to be a hundred percent and with Denzel he didn’t show up to the set, his character showed up to the set, you didn’t get any more than that, so whatever his character was feeling about my character that’s what you got, so if you shake his hand and his character didn’t like yours he’s not really shaking your hand, there’s no conversation or friendly banter because his character and my character had proper beef. I remember filming one of the scenes I said hello to Denzel and he kinda dissed me and later I realized he was in character but it pissed me off, I felt too myself fuck him then and that came across in the film.
His character took you out though man that was a harsh way to go you have to get him back?
Idris Elba: (Laughs) I got him back believe me (laughs). I like Denzel as an actor I’d love to do a film with him for a good six months and carve out some real shit and delve into the characters were playing and merk it you know.
Are the American audience shocked by your English accent?
Idris Elba: (Laughs) A lot of them don’t know I’m English, they’ll think I’m doing a great English accent, I have to tell some people I’m not actually Stringer Bell

How do you follow the football I know you support Arsenal?
Idris Elba: I try to keep up, Fox Sports have it I think and in LA there’s so many English, you bump into a geezer over there and ask what’s the score mate, they’ll be like (in an American accent) Arsenal played Chelsea today and they kicked some ass dude but the referee is an asshole dude (Laughs)
Have you got any last words or shout outs?
Idris Elba: Boy big shout out to East London, Forest Gate my old manor, big up Quincy the comedian big up my boy Boogie that’s my team man, I’ve got too big up Vanessa, Chantelle, I love coming back home and with the music and the films I wanna celebrate it back home in London and spread it.
Idris Elba will next be in Cinemas with Taker – also starring Matt Dillon, Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, Paul Walker, T.I., and Hayden Christensen
