Variety have revealed that Cobie Smulders has been confirmed for the part of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers. In the comics Hill was the strong willed interim executive director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who was not above blackmailing and bullying superheroes to get her way.

Smulders, best known as a regular on CBS’ comedy “How I Met Your Mother,” is wrapping up a deal to star in the pic that Joss Whedon is writing and starts helming sometime in April, while “Mother” is on hiatus.

According to the report Smulder’s deal would integrate her S.H.I.E.L.D agent character in a hefty nine films, as is typical for actors landing roles in Marvel’s pics. The character will work closely with Jackson’s Nick Fury, and eventually becomes the head of the espionage and law enforcement group.

The Avengers comes to cinemas May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Clark Gregg, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston.
