With Josh Brolin confirmed to headline Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook Park’s classic South Korean film ‘Oldboy,’ and Christian Bale reportedly considering the villain role in the revenge tale. Twitch now bring word that Mandate want ‘The Social Network’ and the upcoming ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ star Rooney Mara for the female lead Marie in the thriller.

‘Oldboy’ tells the story of a Joe (Dae-su Oh in the original), a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughters birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, won the much coveted Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

I’m a big fan of both Josh Brolin and Spike Lee, I still don’t quite grasp remaking such a unique and flawless film though if I’m honest. I am however giving this film the benefit of the doubt as Spike Lee is such a talented and original film-maker himself, without doubt one of my favourite directors working today. The combination of Spike Lee and Josh Brolin is certainly a FAR better fit to the material than Will Smith and Steven Spielberg – who had previously been linked to the project. If Christian Bale, one of my favourite actors, and Rooney Mara join cast, this film becomes more and more alluring. “15 years of imprisonment… 5 days of vengeance.”
