ShockTillYouDrop recently spoke to producer Roy Lee about Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook Park’s classic South Korean film ‘Oldboy.’ ‘Oldboy’ tells the story of a Joe (Dae-su Oh in the original), a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughters birthday. For fifteen years he is held captive, and upon his release must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, won the much coveted Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

“We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of the original movie–will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.” He added that “there’s going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike’s signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.”

Josh Brolin has been cast as Joe, while Colin Firth and Christian Bale have been linked to the part of the lead villain.  I’m a big fan of both Josh Brolin and Spike Lee, I still don’t quite grasp remaking such a unique and flawless film though if I’m honest. I am however giving this film the benefit of the doubt as Spike Lee is such a talented and original film-maker himself, without doubt one of my favourite directors working today. The combination of Spike Lee and Josh Brolin is certainly a FAR better fit to the material than Will Smith and Steven Spielberg – who had previously been linked to the project. If either Colin Firth or Christian Bale sign on, this film certainly becomes more and more alluring.
