After being linked to the film since May last year, Variety reveal that Joel Edgerton has officially signed on to star in Kathryn Bigelow’s currently-untitled Osama bin Laden film. The Australian actors stock has been rapidly rising over the last year after gaining international success with ‘Animal Kingdom,’ then subsequently starring in ‘Warrior’ and ‘The Thing.’ In 2012 he’ll also be seen in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby,’ Disney’s ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green,’ and ‘Wish You Were Here.’

The project reunites Katheryn Bigelow with her ‘The Hurt Locker’ screenwriter Mark Boal. The story revolves around the Navy SEAL team that tracked and eventually killed Osama bin Laden. The pic is expected to go into production next month, targeting a December 19, 2012 release. The only other confirmed actor is Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code), however Bigelow is apparently looking at the likes of Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Jennifer Ehle, Rooney Mara, Nina Arianda and Guy Pearce as possible co-stars. UPDATE: Deadline report that Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Chris Pratt and Edgar Ramirez are in negotiations to join the cast.
