If Deadline’s sources are on the money, Warner Bros is moving ahead with the long-rumored ‘I Am Legend’ follow up, as the studio has reportedly closed deals with Akiva Goldsman and Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment to continue the franchise. The intention is for Will Smith to reprise his role as military scientist Robert Neville, the lone survivor of a biochemical disease which was supposed to cure cancer 3 years previous. With only blood thirsty zombies as his neighbors and his trusty dog, Samantha, Robert was trying to discover a cure for this disease and to find out any other people who might have also survived.

The original film was based on the novel by Richard Matheson. This new installment is not being called a prequel, which had been rumored for the past few years. Apparently Will Smith won’t commit officialy until the script is ready. A deal has been made for Arash Amel (The Expatriate) to write the script. There’s currently no word whether ‘I Am Legend’ director Francis Lawrence is returning or not.
