20th Century Fox has today announced a May 23rd, 2014 release date for the upcoming ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ sequel, now officially titled ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’ Following the critical and financial success ($453.2 million worldwide gross on a $93 million budget) of Rupert Wyatt’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ it was pretty much a given that we’d be seeing a sequel sooner rather than later. Undoubtedly a key component of that success was Andy Serkis’ mesmerising performance as Caesar.

Rupert Wyatt, who directed the original, will return to direct with Scott Z. Burns, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa providing the screenplay. Returning producers include Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ arrived in cinemas August 2011, it starred James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Tom Felton, Tyler Labine, David Oyelowo, Brian Cox, and Andy Serkis. Andy Serkis is signed onto return in the sequel as Caesar, there’s currently no word on who will be joining him from the original cast. Expect further details shortly. UPDATE: 20th Century Fox has also pencilled in a July 18th, 2014 release date for the currently untitled ‘ X-Men: First Class’ sequel, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn.
