Arriving in cinemas June 15th, ‘Rock of Ages’ stars Julianne Hough, Malin Akerman, Russell Brand, actor/singer Diego Boneta in his feature film debut, Oscar nominees Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise and Paul Giamatti, Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, R&B queen Mary J. Blige, and multiple Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston.

Russell, you and Alec Baldwin have a great dynamic in ‘Rock of Ages’ as Dennis and Lonny. They have a true passion for rock ‘n’ roll and keeping the club up and running….

Russell Brand: Yeah. My character in ‘Rock of Ages,’ Lonny, he’s the representative, I think, of the audience. He’s the honest to God, sincere music lover. He represents the spirit of rock, as the spirit of freedom, as the spirit of change. He and Dennis are true rock ‘n’ roll veterans, and Lonny’s devoted to the music and to the club. And Alec Baldwin, as Dennis, he was very happy to accommodate however I was improvising in the scene, and he really encouraged me. He’s charismatic, authoritative and playful. I kind if liken Alec to a great British theatrical knight. Plus he’s got endless anecdotes and spellbinding, twinkling eyes (laughs).

Malin, how is your character involved in the story? She’s a hard-hitting journalist…

Malin Akerman. Constance is a reporter for Rolling Stone. She comes to The Bourbon to interview Stacee Jaxx, played by Tom Cruise, who is on the road to becoming a washed-up rock star. He was a great, great rock star in his early days. She really believed in him, she’s kind of frustrated that he’s given up. She comes in to pull out the truth from him, and he’s clearly never met a woman who has stood up to him before, which intrigues him, excites him, and confuses him all at once. But when she tries to pull the truth out of him, things don’t go quite as she’d planned – he ends up seducing her a bit (laughs).

How was it working with Tom as Stacee Jaxx?

Malin Akerman: Tom Cruise is iconic, he’s such a brilliant actor. He’s so talented. Tom not only wants the scene to be great, he wants you to shine in it. He’s so respectful and generous, always. It was an amazing experience working with him. For me, whenever I get to work with someone who’s been around longer than I have, someone who’s really phenomenal and praised by all of their peers, you learn so much from them.

What do you think someone like Adam Shankman bring to a story like this?

Russell Brand: Adam Shankman is lovely, he’s really spirited. He’s the perfect person to direct a film like this, to direct ‘Rock of Ages.‘ Really because he’s got such a wonderful sense of fun. He’s also got a great sense of aesthetics, he’s got a great idea of how a movie like ‘Rock of Ages’ should look. The cast he’s put together, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti, Bryan Cranston, me, that gorgeous Diego lad (laughs), that beautiful Julianne bird (laughs), it’s great. ‘Rock of Ages’ was a lot of fun.

Look out for an in-depth interview with Russell Brand, Malin Akerman and the rest cast closer to the films release date.
