Following news that talks had broke down between 20th Century Fox and Jessica Biel for the part of Viper in James Mangold’s ‘The Wolverine,’ Twitch Film are reporting that Fox are nowy in talks with Svetlana Khodchenkova for the part and are expected to close the deal quickly. The Russian actress has done most of her work in Russia to this point, but she may be familiar to some western audiences thanks to her part in Tomas Alfredson’s ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.’ Viper is a complex character who at one point was a peer of Logan’s as well as an enemy. She was a major player in criminal organization Hydra and, in one story arc, blackmailed Logan/Wolverine into marrying her. Khodchenkova would join the likes of Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Rila Fukushima and Tao Okamoto opposite Hugh Jackman in ‘The Wolverine.’

Scheduled for release July 26th, 2013, ‘The Wolverine’ is set to be directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Knight and Day), while the script is by ‘The Usual Suspects’ scribe Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback. ‘The Wolverine’ takes inspiration from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s Marvel miniseries from the 1980s dealing with the character’s adventures in Japan. There, samurai steel clashes with adamantium claws as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed. Darren Aronofsky was originally tapped to helm the sequel, however he dropped out to spend more time with his family as the film would shoot overseas for an extended period of time. I truly hope this film brings the best out of one of the Comic world’s most fascinating and best loved characters. Even though 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was a financial success by earning over $400 million at the box office, the film was met unfavorably from both fans and critics. Fingers crossed ‘The Wolverine’ is a good’n!
