Following phenomenal performances in the J.J. Abrams-directed ‘Super 8′ and the Cameron Crowe-helmed ‘We Bought A Zoo,’ Deadline reveal that Elle Fanning will star in ‘Olive’s Ocean,’ a feature adaptation of the Kevin Henkes 2003 young adult novel of the same name. Fanning will play a teen who goes on a summer of soul searching after discovering that a classmate who recently died in a tragic accident had secretly hoped to become her friend. Henkes won the 2004 Newbury Honor for this book. The actress is currently in production on Walt Disney Pictures’ ‘Maleficent’ as Princess Aurora opposite Angelina Jolie, and she’ll next be seen on the big screen in Sally Potter’s drama ‘Ginger And Rosa.’

‘Olive’s Ocean’ is being produced by Donald Rosenfeld, who previously work with Elle Fanning’s sister, Dakota, on ‘Effie.’ While on the set of’that film, Rosenfeld asked Elle what her favorite book was, and when she answered ‘Olive’s Ocean,’ that got the ball rolling. “I haven’t worked with a more dedicated actor than Dakota and can’t wait to work with Elle,” Rosenfeld said. “There is such talent, they are young but they are old souls.” The synopsis for the Olive’s Ocean’ novel is as follows: “Sometimes life can change in an instant. Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends, but they weren’t. Weeks after a tragic accident, all that is left are eerie connections between the two girls, former classmates who both kept the same secret without knowing it. Now, even while on vacation at the ocean, Martha can’t stop thinking about Olive. Things only get more complicated when Martha begins to like Jimmy Manning, a neighbor boy she used to despise. What is going on? Can life for Martha be the same ever again?”
