Chris Hemsworth & Chris Evans Interview For ‘The Avengers’ Blu-Ray & DVD Release
Iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow answer the call to action when Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., initiates a daring, globe-spanning recruitment effort to assemble The Avengers team to defeat an unexpected enemy threatening global safety and security. Despite pulling together the ultimate dream team, Nick Fury and longtime confidant Agent Coulson must find a way to convince the Super Heroes to work with, not against each other, when the powerful and dangerous Loki gains access to the Cosmic Cube and its unlimited power.
Directed by Joss Whedon, ‘The Avengers’ (‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK) stars Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye/Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg and Stellen Skarsgard co-star. Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. ’The Avengers’ is available as a 2D Blu-ray Combo Pack, a 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and on DVD from September 17th in the UK and September 25th in the US. My previous interviews for ‘The Avengers’ can be found here: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Joss Whedon.
How did you find it shooting that fight scene in the woods between both your characters Thor and Captain America, alongside Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man? That was one of the first scenes you shot on ‘The Avengers’ in costume, right?
Chris Evans: That was a big one for me, that was the first time I saw Chris Hemsworth in his Thor cape, the first time I saw Robert Downey Jr in the Iron Man suit – and I had literally just seen ‘Thor’ a couple of days prior. So it was exciting. It was a night time shoot, we were in the woods and….I don’t know, there was something about being outside at night, in the cold, it felt like a real fight scene was about to happen. Seeing these guys all suited up, I felt like a little kid.
Do you have a particular favourite moment from the of set ‘The Avengers,’ a time that stood out?
Chris Hemsworth: I would say on the first couple of the days when the whole group was on set together. It was scheduled that way I think on purpose because it was pretty nerve-wracking on set, no one really knew each other yet, nothing was really established. But that certainly felt like, “Wow, I’ve arrived, this is ‘The Avengers.’” (Laughs) Not only seeing these actors, but seeing The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, it was pretty exciting.
Chris Evans: I think mine was when I saw Chris and Robert Downey Jr for the fight scene in the woods.
Chris Hemsworth: It was all downhill from there wasn’t it? We peaked too early.
Chris Evans: (Laughs) Even now, it’s a slow downward slope.
Chris Hemsworth: The big 360 shot, that was kind of cool. I think all of us knew that this was going to be the big trailer moment, you know?
Chris Evans: That was amazing. That was a payoff when you see it on screen. When we were shooting it, you were just like, “Man, I hope this works out, this big 360 thing. It could be really cool, or it could be really cheesy.” But it just worked out so well, I can’t imagine the movie without it.
What was it like behind-the-scenes on a film of this magnitude? If the Blu-ray extras are anything to go by it looked like a tonne of fun, lots of banter?
Chris Evans: That was a funny thing about movies like this, there’s always B-camera’s sitting around. For people that don’t know what B-camera’s are, a lot of times on films they’ll let the actors know ahead of time, “Tomorrow there will be a B-camera.” And some guy on a little video camera would be filming behind-the-scenes stuff. On films of ‘The Avengers’ magnitude there’s a B-camera everyday. You’d see some guy videotaping us. I’m sure there are going to be great moments caught on tape between the banter and the in-between joking that happened among the cast (laughs).
How has it been for you watching ’The Avengers’ multiple times?
Chris Hemsworth: There’s just so much in it, you know? I’ve watched it twice now and seen different things the both times – and I was there shooting the film! So I think if you’re a fan, you’re going to pick up all the good and bad things – the mistakes as well (laughs). I really think ‘The Avengers’ is one of those films that just gets richer and richer each time you watch it, you know?
