With Anthony Mackie recently signing up to play Sam “Falcon” Wilson in Marvel’s ‘Captain America’ sequel ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ the actor has shed some light on the plot on the film and the character he’s portraying while on the promotional campaign for ’10 Years.’ For those that don’t know, Falcon is one of mainstream comics first black superheroes. Sam “Falcon” Wilson has had many street adventures with Captain America in the 1970s comics, when he served as his partner. He derives his powers from a suit that allows him to fly and enhances his strength. He can also telepathically talk to birds. In current comics, Falcon is a key player in many of Captain America’s espionage adventures.

Speaking to MTV, Anthony Mackie touched on taking on the iconic role, “It’s amazing. The biggest part of it is, I think kids for so long have been looking for a role model or someone to look up to. I feel like this being truly the first African American superhero, being introduced in this movie and in this way, I feel like it’s going to be great.” Mackie also said that he’s looking forward to putting his Falcon suit on, though he still isn’t sure what he’s going to look like when ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ starts shooting, “Marvel is really weird, because they don’t let you look at the script. They’re like, ‘Listen, we brought back Robert Downey Jr., so you might want to be down with us,'” he laughed. “But there’s going to be a lot of Anthony in a tight suit kicking ass. Everybody wanted me in spandex, and now you’ve got it — hours of it!”

Anthony Mackie talked some more about Falcon and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ to Vulture, revealing that he’s about to embark on an 11,000-calorie-a-day diet to play the Falcon in the film, “He’s known for his physique. He’s described as 6’3″, 245 pounds, so starting Monday, for the next five months until we start shooting, I’m going back to high-school workouts and start doing two-a-days, so I get up to 230 pounds.” Sounds major! “I’m going to try not to get a job between now and then, so I can really focus on this. Because Chris Evans is in such good shape! I’m just a dude he dragged into the lab that he injected with some shit, but I got to stand next to him. So we shall see!”

The actor spoke some more about playing the part of Marvel’s first black superhero, a fact that wasn’t lost on Mackie’s family, “When I got the part, I called my brother, and I told him, ‘Guess what I’m doing.’ And I told him the movie and who I was playing, and he literally just gave me a litany of history about this character. He went in his closet, and he dug out a copy of the very first Captain America with the Falcon in it. So I said to him, ‘Holy sh*t, you’re an Über-nerd!'”

Pencilled in for a April 4th, 2014 release date, the Captain America sequel will pick-up where Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ left off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Joe and Anthony Russo take over directorial duties from Joe Johnston, who helmed the first Captain America film. While plot details a currently under wraps on ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ the subtitle suggests a respected comic book storyline from 2005 that resurrected Captain America’s sidekick Bucky as a brain-washed super assassin known as the Winter Solider. Expect more ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ details shortly.
