Tom Hiddleston Talks ‘Thor: The Dark World’ & Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith The Accursed
Talking to Red Carpet News TV at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, Tom Hiddleston spoke on Marvel’s upcoming ‘Thor’ sequel, ‘Thor: The Dark World.’ The actor shed some light on what Christopher Eccleston brings to the role of Malekith The Accursed, “Christopher Eccleston, he’s one of Britain’s greatest actors. And he brings to everything he does a degree of commitment, intelligence, conviction and complexity to everything he does. I think he really got his teeth into this thing. It’s hard to tell you anything without revealing too much (laughs). But Christopher has enormous presence, which is very distinguishable on stage as well as on film. I think it’s one of those things you can’t really define, you just can’t stop watching him when he’s on screen. I think he’ll be absolutely magnetic [in the movie].
Tom Hiddleston was also asked about the relationship between is Loki character and Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith, “I really don’t want to spoil anything for you…. what can I say (laughs)? Basically Malekith has his own ambition. And whether or not Loki can coincide with or contradict, subvert or enhance that ambition remains to be seen.”
Marvel’s official character description for Malekith The Accursed is as follows: “Malekith the Accursed ruled the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. Svartalfheim is one of the nine worlds of Asgard. Malekith mastered sorcery, making him a formidable ally to the other enemies of Asgard. He formed an alliance with the god of mischief Loki on behalf of Surtur. Not long after that agreement, he used a special food provided to him by Hela. The food contained some sort of magic, which gave him control of the humans of Earth. While continuing his quest, he took the life of Eric Willis, guardian of the Casket of Ancient Winters. Before his death Willis conveyed the Casket’s location to Loki. Not willing to give up his quest, Malekith Kidnapped the Asgardian Lorelei in order to gain control of the god of Thunder. Thor discovered that he had been tricked into falling for a stack of wood, and became enraged as he learned that the real Lorelei was being held captive by Malekith. Lorelei was eventually freed but, Thor was forced to battle Algrim the Strong. Malekith attempted to destroy both combatants by plunging them into a pit of molten magma; subsequently Malekith retrieved the Casket of Ancient Winters, from the being known as Jagrfelm. Shortly after Jagrfelm’s death, Malekith released its power upon Asgard in his quest to rule all nine worlds.”

Alan Taylor, an accomplished TV director whose credits include ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ ‘Mad Men,’ ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Nurse Jackie,’ takes over directorial duties from Kenneth Branagh, who helmed the first ‘Thor’ film. Don Payne, who co-wrote the first film, penned the original draft with Robert Rodat doing the most recent polish. ‘Thor: The Dark World’ is set for a November 8th release.
