Almost exactly a month ago it was first reported that three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is being eyed for the role of Doctor Strange. Today, Collider bring word that the actor has entered final talks for Marvel’s long-awaited film, adding, “his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone.”

While we don’t yet have an official release date for the Doctor Strange movie, it was recently revealed that ‘Sinister’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ helmer Scott Derrickson is set to direct the film. With Marvel having two mystery “Phase 3″ projects set for July 8th, 2016 and May 5th, 2017, fans have long speculated that one of these films will focus on Doctor Strange. The likes of Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Jack Huston and Benedict Cumberbatch have all been rumored to play the Sorcerer Supreme over the last few months.

Doctor Strange was conceived as an arrogant and selfish surgeon whose hands are damaged in a car accident. After all conventional healing methods fail, he travels to Tibet as a last-ditch effort to find a cure at the hands of a man known as the Ancient One. In an act of benevolence, Strange saves the man from the Ancient One’s power-hungry disciple Baron Mordo, thus becoming the magical art’s new hero. He made his first appearance in the 1963 comic series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comic series and would appear in several other comics that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and Nick Fury.

As of today, Marvel’s upcoming slate is:  ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ on May 1st, 2015, ‘Ant-Man’ on July 17th, 2015, a third ‘Captain America’ film on May 6th, 2016, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′ on July 28th, 2017, and mystery films set for July 8th, 2016; May 5th, 2017; November 3rd, 2017; May 4th, 2018; July 6th, 2018; November 2nd, 2018; and May 3rd, 2019.
