Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm have reportedly set Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz (‘About A Boy,’ the upcoming ‘Cinderella’) to work on the screenplay for the first standalone ‘Star Wars’ film. Shortly after the release of ‘Godzilla,’ Lucasfilm and Disney announced that Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone Star Wars film. In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Following this December’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and this stand-alone film, there’s Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ in 2017 (the sequel to “The Force Awakens”), and then Josh Trank’s stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ feature in 2018. Weitz will replace Gary Whitta, who exited the project earlier this month after he completed the first draft.
Up until this point, very little is known about Josh Trank’s adaptation of ‘The Fantastic Four’ other than it has a “grounded” tone and features a top-notch young cast in the form of Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Toby Kebbell as the iconic villain Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. Today, Collider have revealed the first official images from the film alongside a chat with director Josh Trank and writer-producer Simon Kinberg.
Well, this is a pleasant surprise! Paramount Pictures send word that ‘Mission: Impossible 5,’ formerly planned for release on December 25th, will arrive nearly five months earlier than expected – the film will now hit the big screen on July 31st. ‘Mission: Impossible 5′ will now open opposite Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama ‘Southpaw,’ starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher), ‘Mission: Impossible 5′ stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Simon McBurney, and Rebecca Ferguson. Expect plot details and a first trailer shortly.
‘Selma’ Director Ava DuVernay & Lead David Oyelowo Re-Teaming On Hurricane Katrina-Set Love Story/Murder Mystery
Following their collaborations on ‘Middle of Nowhere’ and the Oscar “Best Picture” nominee ‘Selma,’ Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo are teaming up again for a currently untitled Hurricane Katrina-set love story and murder mystery. DuVernay will write, produce, and direct, while Oyelowo is in negotiations to both star and also produce the project. Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King will serve as executive producers.
“Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time,” said Participant Media’s Jonathan King, adding, “Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to re-team with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film.”

Previously attached to another version of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s fairy tale at Warner Bros. Pictures (which stalled after Guillermo del Toro dropped out last summer), THR today bring word that Emma Watson is joining Disney’s live-action version of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as the lead character Belle. The film will be directed by Bill Condon and is set to begin production in 2015. Expect word on a release date shortly.
Following the news, Emma Watson had the following to say about the film on her official Facebook page, “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx”. The script for the film is written by Stephen Chbosky, who directed Watson in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower.’
