Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him to lead a quiet life in peace. But when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. Opening on September 26th, the likes of Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Haley Bennett, David Harbour and Marton Csokas co-star. Antoine Fuqua – who previously directed Denzel Washington on ‘Training Day’ – helms ‘The Equalizer’.
Your character Robert McCall is someone who comes in and scans a room in two seconds. He’ll know exactly what’s to your left, what’s to your right – and he’ll use any of those things that he needs to stop you in your tracks. He doesn’t kill you from a distance. He’s in your face and watching the light go out of your eyes – that’s a different kind of human being. So what was it about this man that particularly interested you, and what were some of the questions that you had to ask yourself about him that gravitated you towards ‘The Equalizer’?
Denzel Washington: Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal developed the material. Bought the rights to the material and it took close to a year to develop it. They called me in-between and I read it during 4th of July weekend. It was a quick read. I called them up and said this is Robert McCall calling (laughs). It was a real quick decision. For me, the script was great and there was a lot there – a lot there! For me, it was the questions of what is he overcoming? He’s got his OCD issues, so he’s not just some “action guy”. It’s about finding who is he? What makes him tick? What are his flaws? What is he trying to get over? What bothers him? There was a lot to pick at, and I think that long ago, he started out as a man who wanted to help people, and it turned into something else. He had to put that all behind him, to shut the door. And this young innocent girl opens that door again.
Also, the OCD aspect was very interesting. That was an interesting development as we went along. We started talking about it and adding things, opening doors five times. We did a lot of research about it, and I was surprised to find – it’s just obsessive behavior, it could be anything. In fact I read a book ‘I Never Wash my Hands’, so it’s not necessarily about someone who always washes their hands fifty times.
