Amanda Seyfried is in final negotiations to play Cosette in Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) live-action adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel and the stage musical ‘Les Misérables.’ The cast for the film is stellar, it already features Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Sacha Baron Cohen as Monsieur Thenardier, and Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thénardier. Taylor Swift is apparently in the running for the role of Eponine.

‘Les Misérables’ is scheduled for release December 7th, joining a month stacked with anticipated films in Ang Lee’s ‘Life Of Pi,’ Quentin Tarantino‘s ‘Django Unchained,’ ‘World War Z,’ ‘The Great Gatsby’ and Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.’ William Nicholson (Gladiator) has written the screenplay for ‘Les Misérables.’ Sir Cameron Mackintosh will produce alongside Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Debra Hayward for Working Title. Speaking to AdelaideNow (via Bleedingcool) for Catherine Hardwicke’s fairy tale re-imagining ‘Red Riding Hood’ Amanda Sefried spoke candidly about her original casting in the lead role of Baby Doll in Zack Snyder’s barmy looking fantasy adventure flick ‘Sucker Punch.’ “I really wanted Emily Browning’s role in Sucker Punch. I’d originally got that role and everything was in gear, but then I got the call from Big Love saying `we need you this season, you can’t do it’.

“The director, Zack Snyder, fought for me, and I even called the head of HBO because I thought I wasn’t being used in Big Love in a way that was worth me losing out on Sucker Punch. At the time it didn’t seem like there was anything better. Big Love wouldn’t let me go so I cried a lot. Then I realised that actually it was good that I didn’t do it because, if I had, I wouldn’t have done Red Riding Hood.”

She also – again incredibly candidly – spoke about auditioning for a role in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman movie – “I auditioned for a role in the new Superman and didn’t get it.” This may be the role Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike were rumoured to be favourite’s for, who knows. What was you initial reaction to Catherine’s vision?

Amanda Seyfried:  I resisted a little bit at the beginning because I thought, first of all the responsibility of playing such an iconic character was a bit stressful, and thinking how is this going to work? What is the script like? What are they gonna do with all the elements they could use? Then I read the script and I was like ‘’oh my god, I have no idea who the wolf is, this is genius.’’ then I met up with Catherine and she had all these visuals, these drawings, photos, cut-outs and videos, it just seemed so obvious to me.

What was your first reaction when seeing yourself in the iconic red cloak?

Amanda Seyfried: I thought, boy my nose looks big (Laughs). It was cool though, it was so beautiful, there’s so many different colours and things going on in the cape, it was worked on for months.

It was kind of a big deal when the cape came onto the set because it’s its own character, because it’s the most iconic piece of the story. Then after a while it wasn’t really a big deal. I just got sick of it because it’s really heavy. It was so beautifully designed. It took a lot of time to make that cape really beautiful.

Gary Oldman said working with you was a riot, what was he like?

Amanda Seyfried: He’s the funniest person I’ve ever worked with, we were doing a lot of action stuff, he was ridiculous, he would pretend there’s a wolf in front of us, and prank us. It was ludicrous at times….and tiring….but FUN, and the fact is we always had fun, no matter how tired we were, or lack of energy we had at that time of night shooting, it was always fun. He would be really serious, then he’d wear this extra moustache and he couldn’t laugh properly because of moustache, so the way he’d laugh was just one of my favourite memories. It warmed me.

How do you define your character?

Amanda Seyfried: I separated her from the usual damsel in distress – which is in most fairy tales, to somebody that’s completely not in distress at all. She’s this young, strong female that’s going through her life and realizing her sexuality and kind of trying to navigate herself through young adult life in this medieval village. That’s how I wanted to start playing it. Of course, she’s the heroine in the movie, it centres on her, so she needs to have balls. That was really attractive because I like playing women that have just no fear, especially in the circumstances, she’s pretty brave.

We added majorly contemporary elements to it, like a love triangle and the coming of age element to it. It’s very contemporary how she’s dealing with her parents and the man she loves and the man that she was betrothed to.

Your character brings some flamboyance to the town, was that something that jumped out at you?

Gary Oldman: Yeah, this was a fun character. It’s a frolic, it’s a fairy tail – a slightly darker twist on what is already quite a gloomy tale. It was a no brainer for me really, I liked the script very much and I thought the character was fun and it was a fine chance to work with Amanda.

Amanda is a great young actress, what was it like working with her?

Gary Oldman: FUNNY, she’s so funny. She’ll just whisper something to you….you’ll get to this situation where you’re laughing about something and then have to pull it together. It was like, just don’t look at me, because I knew I would laugh. I’d say to her ”you look at my forehead, I’ll look at your ear, because I won’t get through it looking in your eyes,” she was such a riot. I’d love to do a comedy with her!

When you play these types of characters do you ever have to rein yourself in – or can you really push it?

Gary Oldman: It depends what you’re playing, this is a fairy tale, albeit a dark twist on a dark tale, but it’s a fantasy so you can push the limits a bit in something like this. I mean, I think Solomon is…I viewed him as very sort of Shakespearean.

How do you bring the reality to fantastical stories?

Gary Oldman: The reality is what’s on the page. I don’t really work too far away from the framework of the script. I think if something is well written, it gives you the clues and all the answers are there. I always think that if something isn’t well written, then you’re working too hard, and then you know that you’re working hard.

The characters you play all have a different approach, they all set up their own sort of particular hurdles that you jump over. This to me is Dracula Lite, I think. You know, he’s a cousin of Dracula. But good words, that’s your map of the world. So it was a very defined character on the page to begin with, so all the clues were there.

You must be excited in putting on the Commissioner Gordon uniform again soon?

Gary Oldman: My drab greys and beiges (laughs). I went to the production offices the other day and there’s all these fantastic pictures across the wall, Catwoman, this, that, and I thought where’s my wall? I don’t have a wall, I just have a rack of very very dull clothes (laughs). I’m looking forward to working with the gang again, Academy Award winning Christian Bale, I bet he won’t get my coffee anymore (laughs).

In “Red Riding Hood,” Seyfried plays Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men.
