‘Les Misérables’ Breaks The Highest Grossing Musical Opening Record In The UK

‘Les Misérables’ has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend of release, earning £8,127,991 million. The film’s opening haul has made it the highest grossing musical opening ever in the UK, topping the £6.59 million took in by ‘Mamma Mia!’ in 2008. Earlier this week, Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) feature adaptation of ‘Les Misérables’ won three Golden Globes, including “best motion picture (musical or comedy)”, ”best actor in a comedy or musical award” for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Jean Valjean, and “best supporting actress” for Anne Hathaway’s Fantine performance. ’Les Misérables’ has also picked up eight Oscar nominations and nine BAFTA nods. The opening for the film ends The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s four-week run at the UK box office’s #1 spot.

Anne Hathaway Set To Star In A Modern Retelling of Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’

Hot on the heels of winning a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her phenomenal performance in ‘Les Misérables,’ The Wrap bring word that Anne Hathaway will star in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ Described as a modern-day retelling of the iconic play set in mid-20th century Italy, the script is by ‘The Iron Lady’ and ‘Shame’ scribe, Abi Morgan.
Anne Hathway was last seen on the big screen as Fantine in ‘Les Misérables’ and as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ She will next lend her voice to ‘Rio 2,’ the sequel to Fox’s successful animated hit, which is in pre-production. Hathaway is also linked to Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ adaption. Based on Daniel H. Wilson’s epic novel about the human race’s attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising, the film is currently on hold while Spielberg’s team work on the script. If I was a betting man, I’d put my money on Hathaway to take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar early next month for her ‘Les Misérables’ performance.

The categories ‘Les Misérables’ was nominated for include: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Hugh Jackman), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Anne Hathaway), Best Original Song (“Suddenly”), Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Production Design.

Steven Spielberg Speaks On The ‘Robopocalypse’ Delay

Following yesterday’s news that Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ has been delayed, EW today spoke with the director about the current status of the project, “We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally,” Spielberg said. “I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.” He said he’s not sure of the timeline for when they might shoot, let alone get it into theaters, but he estimated a delay of about six to eight months.

The Hollywood Reporter bring word that Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ has been postponed for an indefinite time. The sci-fi action film from DreamWorks would have been distributed by Fox and Disney, with Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth linked to star. Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy said that the project was “too important and the script is not ready, and it’s too expensive to produce. It’s back to the drawing board to see what is possible.” Expect more details to follow.
