‘Iron Man 3′ Reaches The $1 Billion Mark At The Worldwide Box Office
May 17th
Marvel’s ‘Iron Man 3′ has crossed the colossal $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The box-office bounty – roughly $700 million internationally and $300 million in North America – is a major triumph for Disney, which bet big on comic book superheroes when it bought Marvel Studios for $4 billion in 2009. Only 15 other movies have hit the $1 billion plateau. Disney and Marvel’s superhero threequel did it in 24 days, not as quickly as their blockbuster ‘The Avengers,’ which managed the feat in 19 days of release last year.
To get to the #16 slot on the all-time list, ‘Iron Man 3′ passed ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ ($963 million), ‘Jurassic Park’ ($967 million) and ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ ($975 million). ‘Iron Man 3′ is the sixth Disney film to reach $1 billion globally. Besides ‘The Avengers,’ the others are ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,’ ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ No other studio has more than two.
Stunning Batch Of ‘Iron Man 3′ Concept Art Highlighting The Attack On Tony Stark’s Malibu Mansion
May 14th
Film Sketchr has revealed this brilliant batch of ‘Iron Man 3′ concept art in conjunction with an interview with Rob McKinnon, a professional concept artist for such big-budget films as ‘Inception,’ ‘Terminator Salvation,’ ‘Total Recall,’ and of course the recently released Marvel threequel. Asked if there was something special he remembered designing for ‘Iron Man 3,’ McKinnon replied:
“The helicopters that attack Stark’s house are my favorites. Initially, the helicopters were going to be helo-jacked Army Apache gunships. However, there was a pretty cool design opportunity here. So we decided to come up with gunships disguised as civilian news and tour copters. It was fun, but very challenging. These copters had to be armed to the teeth, but couldn’t be exposed until the moment of a surprise attack. So I came up with the concept that the cabin doors crack open like stabilizer wings exposing the mounted armament. I thought if they could pull this off, it would be a kick a$$ moment in the film. I saw it in the trailer, and I teared up like a little girl with a skinned knee! There’s nothing like watching a drawing or painting come to life. Even after 10 years in this biz, I’m still awed by it.” Head on over to Film Sketchr for the full interview.
