What do you think it is about heist movies that interests people?

Matthew Broderick: I’ve always enjoyed a caper or a heist. It’s kind of comforting because you sort of know that they’ll work out, but it’s fun to figure out how they’ll do it, who will get caught, who won’t get caught? Also the stakes are so high that you can relate to the characters. Being caught is so bad in something like this, it’s a very easy way to make a very involving story.

How does your character Odessa link into the story?

Gabourey Sidibe: The guys who are in on the heist, none of them know how to crack a safe. Then Josh remembers from his notes that one of his employees is the daughter of a locksmith. And who’s that employee, Odessa (laughs). And so he has to go to Odessa to ask for her possible skills in opening safes. The only thing is that Odessa might be a little mad at him because he has made her broke. Although if you go to a broke person and offer them a chance to make some money, I think all is forgiven (laughs).

She’s really the only character with an actual skill.

Gabourey Sidibe: Yeah (laughs), that was pretty fun. They actually taught me how to crack a safe, which was pretty awesome. I learned how to do the whole thing. When we were shooting the safe cracking, we’d reset, and I was literally reset my safe, I’d make sure it was locked before doing it again, because I really wanted to do it every time. I got faster and faster, I could do it in 30 seconds, that was so awesome.

Your character Mr. Fitzhugh is sort of the most cowardly of the gang, but he’s also the one who needs it the most.

Matthew Broderick: Yeah, he’s fallen on seriously desperate times. He’s a squatter in the building, he won’t leave because he’s got nowhere to go, and his family live in tents in an empty apartment, his children. So he really needs the money. But then I think as the story goes on he’s helpful in the robbery – and I think he sort of enjoys himself (laughs).

What was it like working alongside Eddie Murphy in this film?

Gabourey Sidibe: Anything can happen when your shooting with Eddie Murphy (laughs). He is hilarious, and he doesn’t do anything more than once. His brain is just insanely insanely funny. There were a few scenes we done where I was just cracking up watching him. He’s fantastically funny, also just standing next to him, he’s such a nice dude, he really made me feel comfortable – I was shaking on the inside still, but I could at least pretend that I was feeling fancy next to him (laughs). It’s definitely intimidating because Eddie Murphy is really really extremely funny, and it’s been proven. Now, I think I’m funny, and my mama thinks I’m funny too (laughs), but standing next to Eddie Murphy having to be in a scene with him and be as funny, that was really scary.

This film is a real ensemble, what was it like bouncing off each other?

Matthew Broderick: We had so much fun working with everyone, everyone was so good. You look over and Judd Hirsch was wondering down the hallway, everywhere I looked there was somebody great. Our little gang, we spent a lot of time together; Michael Peña, Casey Affleck, Gabby, we all got along somehow….and thank heaven, because when there’s a lot of characters, there’s a lot of time waiting while the other guy or girl does his thing. So we had to hang out together, we really had a great time. Then Alan Alda plays the villain, his performance is so good, he’s such a perfect combination of extremely pleasant and charming, and then just viciously nasty. He’s really good at those roles, I really enjoyed watching him work.

Your character Josh and Eddie Murphy’s character Slide have an interesting dynamic….

Ben Stiller: Yeah. Josh grew up in Astoria, Queens, New York. You see at the beginning of the movie that he walks by this guy Slide almost every day, Slide’s up to some nefarious illegal activities, we’re not quite sure what, but it looks like stolen goods. He sort of makes fun of Josh every day. But we don’t realise what there history is, then when it comes time to do this heist and they need somebody who’s a ringer, somebody who’s an actual criminal, Josh has this idea to go to Slide. We then learn that they grew up together on the block and were actually in day care together as kids. Slide doesn’t really remember it, or chooses not to remember it (laughs). So they sort of connect on that and all of a sudden these guys who grew up in the neighbourhood together, who went their different ways, they have this connection from the past. It’s a fun relationship in that they sort of squabble like kids a lot of the time.

How it like working alongside Eddie Murphy?

Ben Stiller: He’s pretty iconic. For my generation growing up, he sort of defines a lot of what comedy is over the last 25 years – so it was pretty cool working with him, very cool (laughs). He’s really funny, he’s really smart, he’s a great improviser. It’s Eddie Murphy, it was real exciting to work with him, everyday I went to work on this film I was excited to be working with him. Sometimes I felt like an audience, just watching him do his thing, just thinking, “That’s real good, that has to be in the movie.” Also with Josh and Slide in the film, he’s a guy that can get away with playing a guy who’s on the edge, your not quite sure which way he’s gonna go, but at the same time he’s such a likeable personality. Also in terms of comedy, he loves comedy, it was great just hanging out with him on set, we have a lot of the same reference points – TV shows we watched as kids, it was fun to just talk and hang out with him. It’s always fun to work with someone I’m a fan of.

Heist movies have been popular over a stretch of time, what do you think it is about them that the audience enjoys?

Ben Stiller: I think with an audience it’s always fun to see people get away with something, if your rooting for them at all, just to see them figure out something you might not be able to figure out yourself. I think that’s a really fun thing in heist movies, to see how people are going to actually come up with something you wouldn’t have thought of. For me that’s what I always enjoy, even if it’s the bad guy that comes up with the plan, your constantly thinking how are they going to get out of this, or that, jump over this obstacle. The fun thing about ‘Tower Heist’ is that there’s a lot of obstacles, and it goes off plan – which again happens in a lot of heist movies. But how it goes off plan is pretty unexpected, that I think was a really important part of the movie – the movie had to be funny, you had to like the characters, but ultimately the heist itself had to be something you’ve never seen before.

That must be one the challenges in terms of the script, having something different?

Ben Stiller: Yeah definitely. The movie has to live and die on the characters in it, because there’s been so many heist movies, it’s really what are you going to see that is different and interesting? I think it’s really about getting invested in the characters – this unlikely group (laughs). It’s then about wanting to go on that ride with them, and then to see what happens. I think what’s fun about ‘Tower Heist’ is that it goes in directions that people wouldn’t expect, we kept on wanting to have as many complications as possible, to make it different and exciting.

I’ve got huge reservations towards this film, the joke that the ‘Fockers’ surname is one letter away from a swear word has already gone to the redundant school of redundancy for the chronically redundant.
