For me, ‘Snitch’ delivers a message about mandatory minimum sentencing laws that needs to be heard….
Barry Pepper: Definitely. ‘Snitch’ focuses primarily on the snowball effect and the tragic fallout of mandatory minimum sentencing laws, which were enacted in 1989. The idea was to try to catch traffickers, big time cartels – but unfortunately 90% of the time its caught low level drug offenders, non-violent drug offenders. It has had really unfortunate effects. Our story focuses on a true story, which was an episode of ‘Front Line.’ It asks the question, “What would you do? How far would you go to protect your child from one of these very unfortunate events?”

In ‘Snitch’ Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) plays Daniel, a guy trying to get his life in order for his family.
What was it about this story and these characters that resonated with you?
Jon Bernthal: There was so much. It’s based on a true story, which is great, I think that starts us off with a great amount of street-cred, you know? I was really excited to work with the director Ric and it’s a wonderful cast. And at its core, ‘Snitch’ really goes into a close examination of each of these characters in the story. The fact that I got to play a guy who comes from this chequered past, but is only about trying to provide a better life for his son and his family – and he has to make some really hard decisions to do it, that was a thrill for me. ‘Snitch,’ it’s about a father and the lengths he’ll go to to keep his son out of prison, to try to get his son out of prison. It’s an unbelievable action ride, but I think it’s a character based movie with a real social conscience. I really dug that.

What were the elements about this story that sparked your interest?
Dwayne Johnson: I think it feels authentically “hard”, and it has a grounded sense of gritty reality. It has great action elements, but then you have a man who discovers he has the heart of a lion – and it doesn’t start off that way. He has a very fractured relationship with his son. He has an ex-wife, he has a new wife, he has a daughter, and he puts all of that in jeopardy by trying to infiltrate a drug cartel, a very dangerous drug cartel. Plus, ‘Snitch’ is based off true events, so a lot of those elements made it very intriguing to me. I loved the characters as well, it was written very well. I really liked my character John, he’s a hard working guy. He believes in the thought process of hard work pays.
