Sep 14th
Iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow answer the call to action when Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., initiates a daring, globe-spanning recruitment effort to assemble The Avengers team to defeat an unexpected enemy threatening global safety and security. Despite pulling together the ultimate dream team, Nick Fury and longtime confidant Agent Coulson must find a way to convince the Super Heroes to work with, not against each other, when the powerful and dangerous Loki gains access to the Cosmic Cube and its unlimited power.
Directed by Joss Whedon, ‘The Avengers’ (‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK) stars Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye/Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg and Stellen Skarsgard co-star. Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. ’The Avengers’ is available as a 2D Blu-ray Combo Pack, a 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and on DVD from September 17th in the UK and September 25th in the US. My previous interviews for ‘The Avengers’ can be found here: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Joss Whedon. Blu-ray and DVD interviews can be found here: Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg, and Tom Hiddleston (more to come).
Do you have a favourite moment from filming ‘The Avengers’?
Scarlett Johansson: For me, I think probably that scene in ‘The Avengers’ where all of us – Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow – are all kind of in a circle and the camera is panning around all of us and we’re all wielding our weapons looking badass, looking up…
Mark Ruffalo: And what were you thinking then?
Scarlett Johansson: I was thinking that I better look as rad as everybody else (laughs)! Because I don’t want to be the one character where they pan across and I’m checking the back of my gun or itching my nose. I wanna be like, “WHAT! Yeah!”

How has it been for you working in this Marvel Cinematic Universe? There’s so many possibilities in the way it moves forward…..
Samuel L. Jackson: It’s real great. Just the fact that it’s such a vast and wonderful kind of landscape to explore, that there are a lot of stories to be told that I can be a part of or I can just sit back and watch and enjoy (laughs). And the fact that they’re such complete, intricate individuals, the Marvel characters. That’s great, really great. There’s stories, everybody lives in a different place, everybody’s coming from a different place, everybody’s trying to make their way in this ordinary world as an extraordinary individual – like when Thor visits it’s kind of a fish out of water story. Those are always interesting. Captain America is a fish out of water in a time he doesn’t quite understand.

Did you have a favourite scene to shoot on ‘The Avengers’? A memorable scene for me watching the film is when Loki and the Hulk “meet”….
Tom Hiddleston: I don’t know if this will be in any kind of blooper reel or anything, but I loved shooting that scene where Loki gets basically Hulk smashed (laughs) – because I was doing it myself, as Hulk is a CGI creation. So I was shouting at thin air, and I was jumping around fighting thin air, and then the Hulk picks me up by the leg and smashes me around. I had a wire tied around to my ankle and then at just the right moment they yanked the wire and I went flying out of shot. And then Industrial Light & Magic, who were the visual effects house on ‘The Avengers,’ they needed references for where Loki lands each time he gets Hulk smashed. And the art director had created these trenches in the set, which I had to jump into (laughs). It looked so ridiculous that Joss Whedon couldn’t keep a straight face and indeed couldn’t bottle his laughter. So he was cracking up, which in turn made me laugh, and the First Assistant Director ended up telling us both of, like, “Guys, we have to get this scene done by the end of the day, we have to go home,” (laughs). So I hope that that’s in there somewhere.

How did you find it shooting that fight scene in the woods between both your characters Thor and Captain America, alongside Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man? That was one of the first scenes you shot on ‘The Avengers’ in costume, right?
Chris Evans: That was a big one for me, that was the first time I saw Chris Hemsworth in his Thor cape, the first time I saw Robert Downey Jr in the Iron Man suit – and I had literally just seen ‘Thor’ a couple of days prior. So it was exciting. It was a night time shoot, we were in the woods and….I don’t know, there was something about being outside at night, in the cold, it felt like a real fight scene was about to happen. Seeing these guys all suited up, I felt like a little kid.

With The Avengers as a collective, they all have their own egos and issues, one of which is working together – something they are not used to doing.
Chris Hemsworth: Yeah. As powerful and unique as they are, they’re all very different. They’re all leaders in their own right when they’re thrown together. That’s the challenge and the conflict. Who is going to steer this ship, who is in control and when do we put our egos aside? All of us spend time feeling each other out and trying to work out how we fit into the puzzle.

Compared to the rest of The Avengers, your appearance as Bruce Banner is a lot more grounded. How was it on set, surrounded by these Super Heroes in their super costumes, did that help with the uneasiness Banner felt in the group.
Mark Ruffalo: Definitely! I’m am in a scruffy linen suit that was bought directly out of a thrift store and I am looking around the room at these impeccable human specimens feeling like a tool and thinking, “What am I doing here?” (Laughs) I felt a strange jealousy as I was looking at their cool outfits and strapping bodies. I was purposely told not to put on muscle for the role, so I was the pipsqueak (laughs). I longed to have my cool outfit and be part of the team and that is exactly how Bruce Banner is feeling as well.
