Relativity Media has set an October 4th release date for Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) upcoming revenge-drama, ‘Out of the Furnace.’ Christian Bale stars in the film as Russell Baze alongside Casey Affleck as Rodney Baze Jr, Russell’s younger brother. Zoe Saldana plays Bale’s love interest Lena Warren and Sam Shepard will play Red, Russell and Rodney Baze’s uncle. Woody Harrelson plays the brutal crime boss Harlan DeGroat and Forest Whitaker plays Wesley Barnes, the Sheriff of Braddock. Willem Dafoe also stars.
‘Out of the Furnace’ is a drama about fate, circumstance, and redemption. Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Affleck) live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother. The film is written and directed by critically-acclaimed Scott Cooper.

IGN has premiered this new US trailer for Andrew Dominik’s crime-drama ‘Killing Them Softly’ (originally titled ‘Cogan’s Trade’). Dominik is the man behind one of my favourite movies of the last decade, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.’ ‘Killing Them Softly’ re-teams Dominik with his Jesse James lead star Brad Pitt as a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game under protection of the mob. Other cast members include Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Bella Heathcote, Max Casella, Slaine, and Sam Shepard….pretty stellar!
‘Killing Them Softly’ tracks Jackie Cogan’s (Pitt) career in a gangland version of law and order. For Cogan is an enforcer; and when the Mob’s rules get broken, he gets hired to ply his trade – murder. Based on George V. Higgins 1974 national best-seller, Cogan is called in when a high-stake card game under the protection of the Mob is heisted. Expertly, with a ruthless businessman’s efficiency, a shrewd sense of other people’s weaknesses, and a style as cold as his stare, Cogan moves with reliable precision to restore the status quo as ill-conceived capers and double-dealing shenanigans erupt into high-voltage violence. Out now in the UK, the film is pencilled in for a November 30th US release. My interview with Brad Pitt for ‘Killing Them Softly’ can be read here.

Three dumb guys who think they’re smart rob a Mob protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse. Brad Pitt plays the enforcer hired to track them down and restore order. ‘Killing Them Softly’ also features Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, and Vincent Curatola. Max Casella, Trevor Long, Slaine and Sam Shepard also make appearances. ‘Killing Them Softly’ is written for the screen and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), and is based on the George V. Higgins novel, “Cogan’s Trade.” Arriving in UK cinemas this Friday, ‘Killing Them Softly’ is released in the US on November 30th. This interview is a re-post from the time of the films May world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Look out for new ‘Killing Them Softly’ interviews in November.
What was it about ‘Killing Them Softly’ that interested you in starring and co-producing the film? Also, as a producer, is there something in particular you look for in a story?
Brad Pitt: First and foremost, Dede Gardner (producing partner) and I have focused on films that might have a difficult time in getting made, and help them get made. To get behind filmmakers like Andrew Dominik who we believe very strongly in, and have great admiration for. That would be the first impetus. But we are also looking for stories that say something about our time and who we are. I certainly felt upon reading this that this was making those comments, a commentary. We were certainly at the apex of the Mortgage loans debacle, people were losing homes right and left. It was at the forefront of the newspapers, as the economy still is. But this commentary and the way it’s done in this film where you believe you’re watching a gangster film, or I felt like I was reading a gangster film, and then it wasn’t until the end when it coalesced for me as far as maybe what direction the film is pointing to overall. That this microcosm actually was saying something about the greater, the macro world.
