MSN has premiered this new trailer for the stop-motion animated film ‘ParaNorman.’ Featuring the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, and Alex Borstein, ’ParaNorman’ comes from the animation studio LAIKA (Coraline).The film is set for release August 17th 2012.

In the original film, Evil Ed was the annoying best friend, but he’s much more layered in this version. Was that in the script?

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: It was definitely in the script. Marti Noxon really wanted to discover the friendship between Charley and Ed. He was fantastic in the 80’s film, but he was loud and zany, and that energy just wasn’t right for this script, so it was really fun to play the polar opposite to what Stephen Geoffrey’s did in the original. So I just took it the more toned down route. We got to improv a lot as well so that was amazing – hopefully we get a few laughs there.

With all the vampires in film and television, what is your favourite type of vampire?

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: I think Colin did a fantastic job of just bringing back the original vampire who is sexy and charming, but is just pure evil! That’s my favourite type of vampire. It’s just one predator, hunting down one other person. It’s more intimate.

The humour is a big part of the film…

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: Craig Gillespie really wanted this movie to be funny. He thought that that was a big part of the original film, it was scary and funny, and campy in a way. I know he wanted to make this movie scary, but you’re not gonna….it’s not ‘Hostel’ (laughs), he wants you to go in there and have a good time. He wanted to have laughs sprinkled throughout the movie.

How was it working along with the rest of the cast on ‘Fright Night‘?

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: Working with the cast was probably my favourite part of this movie. I live in LA, as does Anton Yelchin, we flew to Albuquerque to do this movie, and we didn’t know anybody out there so we were almost forced to hang out with each other. They were all the sweetest people I’ve ever met. Anton’s one of my closest friends now, Imogen is just about to move to LA now, so we get to have her around now. Colin Farrell, he’s one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, but he’s one of the sweetest guys I’ve worked with.

What was it like playing a suburban, American teenager?

Imogen Poots; It was really cool. I think it has to stem from my fascination with all things American. I was brought up with American television, which was very accessible in the UK. But also I felt a need and a want to embody that girl, whoever she was, and understand her. If you’ve read enough American literature and were educated on American films and cinema, then you want to have that opportunity to dismiss your own innate British identity for a short while. It was awesome, I loved it.

Amy is depicted as one of the ‘cool girls.’ I think she’s always been quite popular at school, she’s always had a solid friendship group, she’s bright, she’s brought up well. I think her relationship to Charlie is a surprise to her friends – he’s pretty much regarded as geeky and nerdy. But she finds that endearing, hence their relationship. I think different aspects of their characters make them compatible, in quite a strange way.

At first Amy just perceives Charlie’s insecurities about Jerry ridiculous and ludicrous. I’m sure she thinks it may be an underlying jealousy, because Jerry, you know, he’s a bit of a looker (laughs). I feel she believes that it’s one of Charlie’s many adventures.

What are your thoughts on how Colin Farrell played Jerry?

Imogen Poots: It’s really fantastic the way Colin’s playing it, it’s very….kind of underplayed in a way. Which is important because the piece as a whole has a nice naturalistic feel to it, so it would be a bit off if someone went stiff and started appearing behind houses. He plays it in a really wonderful human way – unnervingly calm in a sense. It was really interesting to watch.

There’s a great balance between humour and horror.

Imogen Poots: Yeah, the juxtaposition of the humour and horror is a brilliant one, because I think they help one another. Partly because even the concept of zombies can be related to some sort of natural epidemic, nothing that far removed. Where-as the idea of a vampire is becoming more and more of a cult, and something otherworldly. So you have to have that present in a vampire orientated horror film, not necessarily a drama film, a horror. I feel the humour compliments that because it is so ludicrous.

What has the experience been like working with both the tenth and eleventh Doctor Who‘s, David Tennant in ‘Fright Night’ and Matt Smith in ‘Christopher and His Kind’?

Imogen Poots: They’re both great. They’ve got this exceptional talent to take on these humans that are essentially creatures. Both of them share that. David is hysterical. It’s fascinating to watch them from a place of London where I recognize them from playing the character Doctor Who, which is such a big deal in the U.K. and now in the US. So with the character of Doctor Who, they’re constantly adapting to different forms and different situations. It’s a real journey they go on, that must be great as an actor.
