In a recent chin-wag with Totalfilm, legendary horror director Wes Craven spoke on the ‘Scream 4′ script controversy, which came to light when Craven tweeted that he was losing control of the project due to the changes in the writing team – the humoungous turd of a film Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger came in to rework Kevin Williamson’s draft.

Craven told us: “I was just stating the facts. In some ways it’s a Wes Craven film and in some way it’s not entirely, because it’s not a script I have control of. It’s ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can.”

He added: “Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin’s script and concept and characters and themes.”

This is pretty disappointing, when a studio takes control over a film, especially when it takes control from an iconic filmaker, it generally doesn’t bode well for the project. I guess we’ll just have to see April 15th. Fingers crossed this film brings some magic back to the Scream franchise.

News of reshoots generally puts fans in a bit of a pickle. Let’s be honest it’s not the most encouraging piece of information that could come out of a films production. Over the weekend Scream 4 was the latest film to brand the dreaded ‘reshoots’ mark. To clear up the matter (and I’m sure to put fans at ease) Wes Craven spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the matter revealing that they’re simply adding to two pivotal moments to the horror flick:

“They’re not reshoots,” says Craven from the snowy set in Detroit. “We had a couple test screenings and we saw two scenes where they had moments you could add to and we just saw a spectacular opportunity. Bob [Weinstein] just said to me basically, ‘You go to your dark side and I’ll give you the money!’ [Laughs] The two scenes were really good, but we saw how they could be spectacular, so we thought, let’s just go for it. They were key moments of the script, so we just decided to go back and go for the grand slam on them.”

And as for reports that the ending was being retooled? “No, the ending is totally kick-ass,” says Craven. “We’re not gonna touch that. [The scenes being added to are] one scene that’s kind of in the late beginning and one scene that’s a little bit later.”

To be honest Scream 4 isn’t really turning my crank, this trailer hasn’t really helped the cause much either, I guess it looks mildly entertaining at best. I was a massive fan of the original, yet the third film in the series was a huge steaming horse turd…..to put it kindly. Wes Craven is undeniably a Horror legend, however except for Red Eye his last few movies have been sub par for his standards. Fingers crossed this will bring some magic back to the Scream franchise.
