With production currently underway on M. Night Shyamalan’s Will Smith and Jaden Smith starring sci-fi adventure ‘After Earth,’ a number of images have emerged from the Costa Rican set of the film courtesy of Smith’s official Facebook page and Shylamalan’s Whosay account.

Formerly titled ’1000 A.E.,’ ’After Earth’ is set 1,000 years into a future where humans no longer live on Earth after it becomes inhospitable. The elder Smith is playing a hero, while Jaden is his son, considered a failure as a warrior. When the two crash-land on Earth, it’s up to the son to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes. Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are also on board, playing Will Smith’s daughter and wife respectively. The script is by Shyamalan, Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and Stephen Gaghan (Traffic). ‘After Earth’ has a release date penciled in for June 7th, 2013. 

Columbia Pictures have announced that Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith will star in M. Night Shyamalan’s currently untitled sci-fi adventure project. The film is set 1,000 years in the future and follows a young boy (Jaden) navigating an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father (Will) after their ship crashes.

To be frank Will Smith is way too charismatic and talented to be working with Shyamalan, the directors last four films have been so bad they’re not even laughably bad. ‘The Last Airbender’ was a huge, steaming, smelly turd of a film if there ever was one, it made Shyamalan’s previous sh*t film, ‘The Happening’ look like a masterpiece. JADEN SMITH TO STAR WITH WILL SMITH IN

AN UNTITLED SCIENCE-FICTION ADVENTURE FOR COLUMBIA PICTURES

AND DIRECTOR M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN

CULVER CITY, Calif., April 4, 2011 – Jaden Smith is set to star opposite his father, Will Smith, for director M. Night Shyamalan in an untitled sci-fi adventure, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures. Shyamalan and Will Smith will produce with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith’s partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay is by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta.

Set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story and we couldn’t be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid. We’re thrilled to have the two of them together on this project.”

Shyamalan added, “The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project.”

JADEN SMITH is the twelve-year-old son of Will and Jada Smith. He most recently starred in the worldwide blockbuster The Karate Kid, which took in more than $350 million. Smith was nominated for a Teen Choice Award, an Image Award, and a Black Reel Award for his role. Prior to The Karate Kid, Smith starred opposite Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in The Day the Earth Stood Still and won the 2009 Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Young Actor for his role in the film. He made his debut performance opposite his father in The Pursuit of Happyness, garnering an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance, a Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role – Male, a Black Reel Award, and nominations by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the NAACP Image Awards and the Teen Choice Awards.

M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN has directed nine feature films: Praying with Anger, Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender. As much as my former seven year old self would hate me for saying it, the original Karate Kid was a bit of a cheesefest, an enjoyable cheesefest, but nothing worthy of the crazed animosity this remake is receiving from some people, I’m not too mad on the remake myself but meh, it’s a kids film, the trailer looked half decent as well, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying—and the feeling is mutual—but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, and kung fu prodigy, Cheng. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.The Karate Kid stars Jaden Smith as Dre, Jackie Chan as Mr Han and is directed by Harald Zwart.

I really hope this isn’t as a bad as I think it will be and it doesn’t ruin one of my favorite films from my childhood, nostalgia does cloud our opinions though, if I remember the film rightly it seems kind of cheesey to me now, but as a kid I remember practising that kick in my back garden for days! The Karate Kid is not meant to be a remake it “will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.”

Directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) and written by Chris Murphy and Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness). The Karate Kid will star Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son) as Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who is forced to move to China after his single mother (Taraji P. Henson) is forced to transfer to the China for work. Of course, unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han (the Mr. Miyagi character), a maintenance man who spots Dre’s black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu.

The Karate Kid is in cinemas June 11th 2010
