Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’ Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman & Jeremy Renner Delayed Indefinitely
Sep 20th
Bummer news story of the week from me
. It looks like Paul Thomas Anderson’s tentatively titled ‘The Master’ has been “delayed indefinitely.” The movie was set to be a Scientology inspired 1950s-set religious drama centred on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as “the Master” (Philip Seymour Hoffman ) whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter (Jeremy Renner) who becomes his right-hand man. Jeremy Renner told Total Film’s latest print edition that the project has been “postponed indefinitely at this point.”
“I was really bummed about that,” Renner revealed. “It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing — Phil, Paul and myself — we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn’t overcome. Or at least Paul couldn’t overcome.”
Hoffman also revealed in an interview with The Playlist during press rounds for “Jack Goes Boating” that “I don’t have any new information ['The Master']. I really mean that, I’m not being obtuse. I don’t quite know what that is at the moment, but hopefully I will and hopefully I’ll be part of something soon. It would be great to work with him again.”
Just from the premise alone I was extremely excited by this. That’s without even considering the fact that Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my top 3 directors working today. His last film There Will Be Blood was a masterpiece. The two leads in Renner and Hoffman are also top draw…….triple bummer. Fingers crossed this will still go ahead, hopefully Mr Anderson is just ironing out some issues he has with the flick.
First Clip From Ben Affleck’s The Town – Starring Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm & Affleck Himself
Aug 31st
Yahoo have released the first clip from Ben Affleck’s The Town. In the clip Jem (Jeremy Renner) informs Doug (Ben Affleck) that the hostage they took lives in their neighbourhood. I’m FULLY stoked for this film, it looks like an intense and gritty crime caper, it’s comfortably sitting in my top 5 anticipated movies left of 2010. I really like Ben Affleck as a director, his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone was a corker. The Town has a September 17th release date in the US and September 24th in the UK.
Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang’s latest job, when they briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name… and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug…not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path. The film co-stars Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Pete Postlethwaite, and Chris Cooper.
Jeremy Renner Joins Tom Cruise & Ving Rhames In Mission Impossible 4
Aug 26th
Deadline have reported that Jeremy Renner has signed on to star alongside Tom Cruise in Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible IV. They say “Paramount has struggled to find the right co-star to play an operative opposite Cruise, and one factor was selecting an actor who could potentially carry the series down the line, should Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character not continue to be the emphasis. While Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment, production chief Adam Goodman wanted a guy who could grow into a leading man in his own right.”
I REALLY like the choice of Renner, he gave a powerhouse performance in The Hurt Locker. I like the fact that he’s not your obvious pretty boy choice, he’s not the most suave or charismatic actor out there, acting wise he’s definitely sitting with the big boys though. I’m so glad after putting in work for years he’s finally getting his due, he’s got some great roles lined up – Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, The Avengers and Ben Affleck’s The Town. My hopes for Mission Impossible 4 have substantially risen with the inclusion of Renner, not to mention that Brad Bird (Ratatouille, The Incredibles) is directing. Production on the fourth instalment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is scheduled to begin this fall under the direction of Brad Bird. J.J. Abrams is producing the December 16, 2011 release with Tom Cruise.
International Poster For Ben Affleck’s The Town – Starring Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm & Affleck Himself
Aug 17th
The Town looks slick and enthralling, it’s easily one of my most-anticipated films for the remainder of 2010. I have to admit though I’m not a big fan of this international poster, it looks pretty generic with the overused floating head style, the domestic poster was approximately 3978327 times better. I really like Ben Affleck as a director, his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone was a corker, it was anchored by great performances and intelligent direction. The Town has a September 17th release date in the US and September 24th in the UK.

Ben Affleck’s The Town Poster – Starring Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm & Affleck Himself

Right off the bat I have to admit I’m a complete sucker for heist/bank robbery movies. Gritty crime drama‘s are right up my alley. The fact that this has a cracking cast and I really like Ben Affleck as a director only adds to my anticipation, his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone was one hell of a movie, it was gripping from start to finish. The Town has a September 17th release date in the US, not sure of a UK release date yet.

Marvel Assemble The Avengers For the First Time At Comic Con – Robert Downey Jnr, Samuel L Jackson, Chris Evans & More
Jul 25th
Well hit me over the head with a drumstick and call me Mr cool, I could have bet my whole existence that this was going to happen. To be fair as ‘surprises’ go it’s a pretty awesome one , at Comic Con after Marvel showcased their upcoming Captain America and Thor movies, Kevin Feige (Marvel Studies President) brought the entire crew of The Avengers on stage (bar Don Cheadle), marking the first time we could see Robert Downey Jr., Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Director Joss Whedon assembled together in one room. This also confirms that Joss Whedon IS directing, Jeremy Renner has been signed on to play Hawkeye and that Mark Ruffalo has replaced Ed Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. I’m still slightly soured on this film due to the dismissal of Ed Norton, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I’m sure geekgasm’s are ensuing!! The Avengers hits theaters May 4, 2012.
