What initially interested you in playing Dexter?

Jim Sturgess: First of all just because it’s a different character from any character that I’ve played so far. That’s always interesting, when it’s something new, a new type of character to play. He’s a big personality so there’s a lot going on with him, he has a great outward presentation of himself, this overprivileged underachiever. This spoilt brat with a good heart. There was a lot of layers to him. As much as he was arrogant, irritating, and slightly obnoxious, there’s also this very gentle, very kind, very loving man. I was interested in that sort of balance I suppose.

How was it playing him over the 20 year span?

Jim Sturgess: He’s constantly changing, and that’s been the hardest part of making this film, and also the most exciting part as well. As an actor it’s so much fun to get under all those different sort of personas – which we all have in everyday life. We’re so many different things to so many different people. It’s nice to see this span and this journey, and see how he evolves and learns how to acknowledge the experiences he has and how he uses that with his relationship with Emma.

You and Anne Hathaway’s character go through such a broad range of emotions in this film. How did you build this chemistry you two have on screen? 

Jim Sturgess: Just by listening to music and playing cards, that’s pretty much all that went down. We didn’t really try to create chemistry, we just got along and didn’t really think about it. We didn’t over think it. We hung out, talked, and luckily we got on really well, it was pretty effortless.

Working with Anne was amazing. She’s such a lovely person, so easy to get along with. I first met her in LA, when we first done a little read through together, even that small amount of time with her, I could tell she was a very warm person. There’s a lot of Emma in Anne, whether she’d be able to admit that or not I don‘t know (laughs). There’s a lot of similarities, she has an intellectual wit that Emma has.

How was it working with director Lone Scherfig on ‘One Day’?

Jim Sturgess: She makes me laugh a good six or seven times a day. She has these classic one-liners that are just hilarious (laughs). I sort of wish I wrote them all down and made a little table book out of them, some of the stuff is just truly hilarious. She cares about every single person on the set, not just the actors, not just the Director of Photography, or whoever, she cares about everybody. She’s sort of the tonal pilate of the whole piece, she sort of navigates us through this quite complicated film to get right tonally.

How does Emma link within the story?

Anne Hathaway: We meet Emma right at the beginning of the film, she’s just completed her study at Edinburgh University. On the very last night – probably that she’ll ever see him – she meets Dexter Mayhew, a boy that she’s had a crush on for a very long time in school. A boy very very different from her, and against her better judgement she winds up going home with him. Things don’t go exactly as planned (laughs), I think they were expecting a romantic…something to happen (laughs). Instead they kind of wind up talking and connecting. The movie takes off from there, it’s the story of their friendship and how it changes, it grows, and is challenged over the course of twenty years.

What was it like working alongside Jim Sturgess?

Anne Hathaway: How can you not get along with Jim Sturgess?! Everyone, myself included, just adored him, and was completely in love with him. It has been eye opening to see his approach to everything. He’s a very beautiful man. very soulful. He has an enormous heart, an openess about him. But at the same time he’s very hard working, he’s so creative – all these qualities really lend themselves to the character of Dexter. Jim just bring so so much to it.

What do you think separates this story from other romantic films?

Anne Hathaway: I think, I mean no disrespect to them, because God knows I have probably made a few and will continue to, in a lot of traditional rom-coms, let’s call them, or romances – people meet in really unbelievable ways, and then they fall in love in about three weeks, and then they fight, and then somebody chases somebody across Manhattan and then they kiss, and that’s the end of the story. This movie allows these characters to get to know each other a really long time. So when they say they love each other, when they admit to it, you believe them, they’ve earned it. I think this is a movie where the characters earn your belief in their love.

What was it like playing a character over the space of twenty years?

Anne Hathaway: Initially I thought, “what an extraordinary, amazing opportunity, how much fun is it going to be to age twenty years!” Then the closer I got to doing the film I realised it was going to take a lot of very specific, carefully measured nuances and changes from year to year. Because if you’re playing a character and you see them at one point, and then you see them twenty years later, it’s easy to imagine a whole host of changes and do something quite dramatic. With this, everything had to be noticeable, but also incredibly subtle, because you don’t change every year, year to year. I feel like you go through pockets of growth in your life.

Every decision was calculated. From wardrobe – how does Emma change? Especially actually with the costumes, there’s a physicalization of the character. How do we use the clothes to reflect that? When do we make her look a bit rounder? When do we know that she’s been working out? (Laughs) I know that sounds silly, but we had to decide what her habits were at all different points in her life, and figure out how we were going to reflect that. Hair and make-up, it was the same thing, it wasn’t just about finding the right look, we had to go a lot deeper – ask ourselves why did she do this? Where was she when she decided to cut her hair off? So many factors.

‘The Way Back’ is Peter Weir’s awe-inspiring epic inspired by the true events of a group of escaped prisoners from a Siberian gulag in 1940. The film is based on several sources, most notably the Slavomir Rawicz book ‘The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom’. The book is Rawicz’s account of being captured by the Red Army in 1939 and his journey to freedom with other inmates, who crossed the Siberian arctic, the Gobi desert and the Himalayas, before finally settling in Tibet and India. The film features a fantastic cast in Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, Mark Strong and Saoirse Ronan. Check out what Colin Farrell had to say about the film below.

I read that you didn’t see Valka as the character you necessarily wanted to play. Was it easy to research where this guy came from?

Colin Farrell: From reading the script I saw Valka as a big stretch. It was something that was incredibly disparate to anything I’d approached before. I had no relationship to that time in history, or that country, so I knew it’d be a journey of discovery, and that’s exactly what it proved to be.

To be honest Valka was one of my least favourite characters to play. I felt very sad, he’s a very lonely fella, but he’s also somebody who’s at once a victim of and a huge proponent of the system which formed him. I found that really, really interesting.

The tattoos Valka sports in the film are a big part of his character…

Colin Farrell: There’s an incredible, incredible significance to every single drop of ink that appears on any of these men’s bodies, much more so than the couple of drunk markings I have on my body (laughs). But each single tattoo referenced either a crime committed or an amount of time done. Again, it was just something that was very foreign to me, that was very exotic, as was the accent and the language.

Valka does this spectacular turnaround at the border post and goes into the distance. This might be a bit of a tough question, but did you ever posit what might have happened to him afterwards?

Colin Farrell: Absolutely yeah. It just kept coming to me that he died in the first town he made it to. That he died in a tavern, got stabbed in a tavern.

Do you think he had a death wish in the end?

Colin Farrell: No not at all. I mean how deep do you want to get into his conscious life and his behaviour and what he was inspired by? Nature, nurture, all that jazz. He certainly didn’t have a……a joie de vivre. The world of the Gulag made great sense to him, it was something that he could exist within the confines of, or as he would imagine it the liberty of, the outside world was the world that didn’t make sense to him.

What were the main challenges of the shoot for you?

Colin Farrell: I didn’t have to deal with the heat, it was just freezing cold in Bulgaria. We were there right in the middle of winter. The whole city (Sofia) was covered in two or three feet of snow. We started off shooting in the Gulag which they built to extremely painful detail, it was just stunning-looking, but incredibly harsh and incredibly foreboding. The environment certainly did a lot of work for you.

At moments it smashed the line between reality and fiction, and I say that with ABSOLUTE respect for the level of comfort that we still worked within, but sometimes there were moments where the line between reality and fiction was smashed, and that was where you are literally trying to get through what you’re trying to get through, to the best of your ability, without being conscious of anyone observing. A heater and a cup of tea was always within walking distance but it was very harsh.

I found the inaction, or seeming inaction hard. There were days on end where you had nothing to do but walk, and to stay focused and to stay close to whatever you deemed was your character’s gait, your character’s thoughts. This was actually an exercise in the patience of just ‘being’. It was interesting.

This new poster has been released online for Peter Weir’s wonderful looking ‘The Way Back’ via IMPA. I’ve been sold on this film ever since it was announced. From what I’ve seen it looks like after five Oscar nominations Peter Weir (Master And Commander, The Truman Show, Witness) may be in the running again to bring home that faceless gold man. The cast he has assembled is stellar in Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, Mark Strong and Saoirse Ronan. I’ve got a screening for this tomorrow and I can’t wait! The Way Back is set for release December 26th.
