Closely following the news that Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine are in discussions to join Disney and Rob Marshall’s big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical ‘Into the Woods,’ THR today reveal that Emily Blunt and Christine Baranski are also in talks for the film. The two actresses would join Johnny Depp, James Corden and Meryl Streep, already confirmed for the roles of the Wolf, the Baker and the Witch. Blunt would play the pivotal role of the Baker’s Wife, a woman placed under a spell of barrenness by her sorceress neighbor (Streep). When the spell is lifted, she suddenly finds herself pregnant – but in the dark musical, happily ever after is only the beginning. Gyllenhaal and Pine would play Cinderella’s Prince and Rapunzel’s Prince. Baranski is linked to the role of Cinderella’s mean-spirited and demanding stepmother.
The musical revolved around a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter Rapunzel, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and other classic fairy tale characters. Production on ‘Into the Woods’ commences in London in September. David Krane (Chicago, Nine) is working on the music for the film, while James Lapine penned the script, based on his book for the musical. John DeLuca, who previously produced Rob Marshall’s ‘Chicago’ and ‘Nine,’ will serve as producer on ‘Into the Woods.’

According to reports, Joel Edgerton has joined the cast of Barry Levinson’s (Rain Man) ’Black Mass.’ In the crime thriller, Johnny Depp will play Boston’s most notorious gangster, Whitey Bulger. ‘Black Mass’ tells the true story of Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. However, after the Feds closed in on their targets, they double crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.
Whitey Bulger rose to the top of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List when he disappeared for a decade before he could be put behind bars. Many felt he could never have gotten that far without the help of John Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger and his brother. Connolly was tasked with bringing down the Italian mob, and he was aided by Bulger, who burnished his own position as Boston crime kingpin by getting rid of the competition for his Winter Hill gang. Joel Edgerton will play Connolly, who was lauded for his work before things went south for him. He was eventually convicted of racketeering and obstruction of justice for aiding Bulger, who is currently in a Massachusetts state prison for second-degree murder.
