Josh Brolin To Star In Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake
Aug 29th
Deadline are reporting that Josh Brolin will headline Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook Park’s classic South Korean revenge thriller ‘Oldboy.’ The film tells the story of a Joe (Dae-su Oh in the original), a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, won the much coveted Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
I’m a big fan of both Josh Brolin and Spike Lee, I still don’t quite grasp remaking such a unique and flawless film though if I’m honest. I am however giving this film the benefit of the doubt as Spike Lee is such a talented and original film-maker himself, without doubt one of my favourite directors working today. The combination of Spike Lee and Josh Brolin is certainly a FAR better fit to the material than Will Smith and Steven Spielberg, who had previously been linked to the project. Expect more casting news soon.
Nick Nolte Joins Sean Penn & Ryan Gosling In ‘Gangster Squad’
Aug 29th
Deadline bring word that Nick Nolte has joined the cast of the ‘Zombieland’ director Ruben Fleischer’s period crime drama ‘Gangster Squad.’ He would star alongside an already top-notch cast in Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena, Mireille Enos and Emma Stone. Nolte will play Bill Parker, “the new chief of police in Los Angeles, and the first in a awhile who hasn’t been corrupted by Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). The chief, a Purple Heart recipient at Normandy, is the one who starts the Gangster Squad, a crack team designed to bring down organized crime.”
The drama, based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman, is the fact-based tale of the crime fighting exploits of a squad of elite Los Angeles officers in the 1940s charged with stopping vicious Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) and other mobsters. Screenwriter Will Beall is a former South Central Los Angeles cop who wrote the novel L.A. Rex. I’m an absolute sucker for crime dramas, especially mobster flicks. With the names attached and source material I’ve got ridiculously high hopes for this project!
