Olivia Thirlby Interview For ‘Dredd 3D’
Sep 21st
In ’Dredd,’ the future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.
During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighbourhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival. ‘Dredd’ is brought to life by the endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland (28 days later, Never Let Me Go) and acclaimed director, Pete Travis (End Game, Vantage Point). Starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Deobia Oparei, Wood Harris, Jason Cope and Domhnall Gleeson, ‘Dredd’ is out now in the UK and the US. My previous interview with Olivia Thirlby for the film can be read here.
What is it about the character of Judge Dredd that speaks to you?
Olivia Thirlby: There’s something really special about this character of Judge Dredd, and there’s something about this dystopian future, something about the fact that he’s this man. He’s a man not endowed with supernatural abilities, or superpowers, or super human strength, or a magical robotic suit. Dredd, he’s a man. He’s a man who’s tremendously courageous, very moral, sees the world in black and white – and he’s pretty badass (laughs). He’s kind of got that Dirty Harry, Clint Eastwood thing going for him.

The first time you watched the full completed movie was at Comic-Con with an audience, how was that experience?
Karl Urban: Yeah. The first time I saw ‘Dredd’ was at Comic-Con in San Diego. It’s a fun film and it was received so well, and I think that’s all you can ever hope for when you make a movie – that an audience has as much fun watching it as you had making it. And they did, they absolutely loved it, and I think that’s the testament of the hard work of a lot of people. And particularly Alex Garland and Anthony Dod Mantle, the cinematographer – because ’Dredd’ is a very visual film. And if you’ve got to see it, you’ve really got to see it in 3D. He done an amazing job.

What was your reaction when you first read Alex Garland’s screenplay for ‘Dredd’?
Olivia Thirlby: Alex Garland wrote a brilliant script and that is what brought me in. The moment I read Anderson’s first line of dialogue she jumped right into my heart and I have Alex to thank for that. I really connected with the character, so I made an audition tape. Then I didn’t hear anything for maybe three weeks and forgot about it and thought, “Oh well, I guess they found someone else.”" I took no news as bad news and as it turned out: no news is good news (laughs), because out of the blue I heard they really liked my tape and it all kind of went from there.

As a fan of the character and the comics, how was your first meeting for ‘Dredd‘ when you were discussing to play this character you’ve grown up reading?
Karl Urban: When I heard they were making this reboot I was pretty intrigued, I was very interested because of my history of reading the comics, so I took a meeting with Alex Garland, Andrew MacDonald, Allon Reich and Pete Travis and listened to their take. It became pretty apparent to me that they were very, very focused of what their vision was of what they wanted to create. They wanted to deliver a film that was high-octane, realistic, gritty, hardcore and faithful to the source – which immediately intrigued me! I really love the character of Dredd, he is the ultimate lawman, he is Judge, Jury and Executioner operating in a society where the normal process of justice has changed, a society in decay and distress. There’s no more protracted legal system, it has all been condensed into this one man. I’ve always loved a vigilante-type character and Judge Dredd is one of the best.
