Director Simon West Interview For ‘The Expendables 2′ – Talks Sylvester Stallone & Action Icons
Aug 17th
‘The Expendables 2’ is the testosterone-filled, action-packed sequel to the 2010 worldwide box-office success ($274 million worldwide) ‘The Expendables.’ From Sylvester Stallone and a powerhouse line-up of the biggest action-adventure superstars from around the world comes the next chapter in ‘The Expendables’ saga. Reunited for what they think should be a quick, in-and-out mission, this tight-knit band of old-school mercenaries are about to find themselves at the brink of global disaster . . . and driven to extract their own brand of up-close and personal vengeance. ’The Expendables 2′ stars Sylvester Stallone (Barney Ross), Jason Statham (Lee Christmas), Jet Li (Yin Yang), Dolph Lundgren (Gunner Jensen), Terry Crews (Hale Caesar), Randy Couture (Toll Road), Bruce Willis (Mr. Church) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Trench), with newest cast members Liam Hemsworth (Billy the Kid), Yu Nan (Maggie), Scott Adkins (Hector), and martial arts legends Chuck Norris (Booker) and Jean-Claude Van Damme (Jean Vilain). ‘The Expendables 2′ is out in cinemas now. My other interviews for the film can be read here (more to come): Sylvester Stallone, Liam Hemsworth and a joint Terry Crews and Randy Couture interview.
What was it about these characters in ‘The Expendables 2’ that made you want to jump on board and direct this film?
Simon West: I wanted to direct this film because I know how much people love these characters, and now they’re going to get to see more of them in even higher adrenaline situations, plus I loved the first film, ‘The Expendables.’ I think audiences connect with this group because they’re funny, they’re tough, they’re very good at what they do – and yet they aren’t super-human. They aren’t bullet-proof. They each have their flaws and each character is screwed up in their own little way. People root for them because they’re underdogs and we can all relate to that. I find a lot more colour in how Sylvester Stallone wrote these very human action characters than in a man who is indestructible. And I was inspired by how the “Expendables” characters follow the original action formula: real people, with lethal expertise, pushed into situations where they have to use it.

With both of your backgrounds in professional sports, what disciplines from that have transferred over to help your careers in acting? In particular, with a film like ‘The Expendables 2,’ when you’re a part of a big team, an ensemble….
Randy Couture: There’s a tonne of crossover. First of all there’s being coachable. And then, there’s no other time in my life when I have been more in the moment than when I’m standing in the cage, looking at a cat who wants to kick me in the head. And that’s what acting is: being in the moment. You have to listen to your cues, know your fellow actors, be coachable, know your lines, be prepared, and you have to have the discipline to show up ready to go. I think all of those things, for me, came from athletics.
Terry Crews: For me, when I was a rookie in the NFL, they take you into the locker room and you’re like, “Ooh, this is pretty!” And then you look at your shiny helmet and you‘re like, “Ooh, look at my shiny helmet!” And then you go out on the field and you’re like, “Ooh, the grass is so green!” And then you see the legend that is playing at Quarterback, the super Linebacker, the Running Back that’s a star; who’s been a star for 5 or 6 years, and you’re like, “Wow, that’s him. I’ve got his jersey at home!” And then when they blow that whistle you’ve to hit them in the mouth, immediately (laughs)! And that’s what ‘The Expendables 2’ was, because you’re walking around like, “That’s Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ooh, that’s Sylvester Stallone.” But the thing is, you soon realise that they brought you here to bring the heat, to bring it. And Sly would tell us, he’d be like, “Hey man, this is your moment, this is your time, you take it!” I was like, “Wo, you don’t have to tell me twice,” (laughs). You realise that to be successful on something like this, ‘The Expendables 2,’ it’s a thing where you will never perform past your own self image, and you have to see yourself like those guys. You have to see yourself as big as those guys – in order to even be around them. It’s not about who’s more important, who’s this, who’s that. But when you know your purpose, you know why you were hired, you understand why you were there, it all makes sense, you can just flow right in there. I’m a fan, just as much as anyone else, but that mind frame allowed me to go right in that mode, and that’s one thing that sports prepared me for.
Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger & Jean-Claude Van Damme Feature In New ‘The Expendables 2′ Clip
Aug 15th
Lionsgate has unleashed this new “Airport” clip from Simon West’s ‘The Expendables 2,’ showcasing Jean-Claude Van Damme and Scott Adkins’ team facing off against Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and the band of Expendables. The testosterone-filled film sees Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross, Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas, Jet Li’s Yin Yang, Dolph Lundgren’s Gunnar Jensen, Terry Crews’ Hale Caesar, Randy Couture’s Toll Road, Bruce Willis’ Mr. Church, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Trent ‘Trench’ Mauser return from ‘The Expendables.’ The likes of Chuck Norris’ J.B ‘The Lone Wolf’ Booker, Liam Hemsworth’s Bill ‘The Kid’ Timmons, Scott Adkins’ Hector, Nan Yu’s Maggie, Amanda Ooms’ Pilar and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Jean Vilain join the fray in ‘The Expendables 2.’ In this sequel, Mr. Church reunites the Expendables for what should be an easy paycheck, but when one of their men is murdered on the job, their quest for revenge puts them deep in enemy territory and up against an unexpected threat. ‘The Expendables 2′ arrives in cinemas August 17th. My interviews for the film can be read here (lots more to come): Sylvester Stallone and Liam Hemsworth.
The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother. That is done the Expendables way….

What do you think is the appeal to the audience about the “Expendables” characters? Your more relatable, real-deal, hard-boiled justice-seekers.
Sylvester Stallone: I think the characters appeal to the audience because they harken back to a time when our heroes were flesh and blood, they didn’t have an extraordinary abilities – other than the desire to survive and to be victorious, even at the cost of their own lives. There’s something that’s relatable about it because they are flesh and blood. What I like about the “Expendables”, especially in this story, is that these guys put their lives on the line for a cause. For ‘The Expendables 2,’ we’ve pulled together the most phenomenal action-adventure cast that I’ve ever been involved with. We are bringing back that old time rock ‘n roll, and giving audiences what that they haven’t seen for a while: visceral, true-to-life action.
