Andrew Garfield Talks About His Role In The Upcoming Spiderman Reboot
Sep 15th
The Associated Press recently caught up with Andrew Garfield while he was promoting Never Let Me Go at the Toronto International Film Festival. He spoke a little bit about his role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot and what appeals to him about the iconic character.
“His youth, his relatability, his struggle. He was just this skinny boy. He was a skinny boy who felt stronger on the inside than he looked on the outside, and I related to it immediately, and it stayed with me as I grew up. Every single generation of the comic, the cartoons and the movies, it all means a great deal to me. It was always something that gave me hope as a skinny little kid whose sense of injustice about the world didn’t match his sense of strength about his body. I found it so inspiring and uplifting and reassuring. To be a part of that mythology and that legacy is a true honor.”
I’ve got full faith in Andrew Garfield as Spiderman, I was never a big fan of Tobey Maguire in the role, he was a bit too whiney for me, especially in the 3rd film, I just wanted to slap him about and tell him to man up the whole bloody time! Andrew Garfield also talked about training for the film which begins shooting in December.
“We’re just talking about where we want to go with it and what kind of body shape it should be. What the skill set should be. I know I’m going to be doing a lot of flexibility training and a lot of strength training, because I have to swing and stuff. I’m just guessing, but it’s all kind of early stages.”
The Untitled Spider-Man Reboot comes to cinemas July 3rd, 2012.
Andrew Garfield Talks About The Upcoming 3D Spider-Man Reboot
Sep 6th
The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with Andrew Garfield about the playing the part of Peter Parker/Spiderman in Marc Webb’s upcoming 3D Spider-Man reboot at the Telluride Film Festival. Garfield won the part over the likes of Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Michael Angarano, and Josh Hutcherson. Garfield’s casting gets two big thumbs up from me, Garfield is a class act, he was fantastic in Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Lions For Lambs. Garfield is going to get a lot more exposure later this year when he’s seen in David Fincher’s Facebook movie The Social Network and Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go alongside Carey Mulligan. With this casting decision and the fact that Marc Webb is directing, I’m actually looking forward to this reboot. Marc Webb directed (500) Days Of Summer, a film I really enjoyed– a HUUUUUGGGGE achievement considering my devout hatred of romantic comedies. Here’s what Andrew Garfield had to say about the Spiderman Reboot:
“I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, ‘Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?’ [laughs] ‘Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks…’ So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, This is what we’ve been waiting for. Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It’s a true f**king honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume.”
Garfield also spoke about The Social Network and what it was like working with director David Fincher: “It was just the greatest, really. The amount of trust that you feel for him, that you can place all of your trust in him if you’re a fan of his work. Which I am, I’m a fan of all of his movies so I love his taste and I love the performances that he gets from people, that he edits from people. So going into it like that, you go, “I can let go.” You can let go in a scene, and you don’t have to worry about doing what you want to do because you know that whatever he’s got in mind is going to be better than what you want to do. He does do a lot of takes.”
Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Andrew Garfield Is The New Peter Parker/Spiderman
Jul 2nd

After months of speculation Columbia Pictures have confirmed that Andrew Garfield has been signed up to play Peter Parker/Spiderman in Marc Webb’s upcoming 3D Spider-Man reboot. Garfield was among the list of final contenders along with Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Michael Angarano, and Josh Hutcherson. This casting decision gets two big thumbs up from me, Garfield is a class act, he was fantastic in Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Lions For Lambs. One thing that does baffle me about this decision is that I thought that they were looking for a High School Spiderman, Garfield is 26……….he look’s kind of young I guess.
“Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker,” says Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.” Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Marc Webb Signs Up For The New Spiderman Reboot Trilogy
Jan 20th

Last week this was just a rumour, now the ink has dried. Marc Webb has signed up for 3 Spiderman movies. To be honest this reboot doesn’t interest me at all, I’m not that big on Spiderman as a character in general, I have to say though I really like the choice of Marc Webb, I really enjoyed (500) Days Of Summer – a HUGE achievement considering my devout hatred of romantic comedies. The only problem I can see with Marc Webb directing is how much creative control he will hold. Having only made one 1 small budget film doesn’t give him a huge amount of clout with Columbia. So much has been said about the studios interference with Spiderman 3 and the direction of the now dead and buried Spiderman 4, hopefully this new reboot doesn’t follow the same path.
Webb said, “This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man.”
Stan Lee, co-creator of Spider-Man, added, “I’m excited that Sony has chosen a director with a real penchant and understanding for the character. This is a brave, bold direction for the franchise, and I can’t wait to see what Marc comes up with next.”
Marc Webb Director Of 500 Days Of Summer Frontrunner For Spiderman Reboot + Interview
Jan 14th

Deadline.com have reported that Marc Webb is at the top of Sony’s list for the new Spiderman reboot (after the cancellation of Spiderman 4), “Webb met about the Spidey reboot with the pic’s producers and executives looking to get the picture into production later this year for a Summer 2012 release.”
I don’t usually cover much rumours and speculation but this has interested me and also given me the opportunity to unleash my Marc Webb interview I done while he was promoting (500) Days Of Summer last year
. I was a big fan of (500) Days Of Summer, I usually HATE ‘romantic comedies’ but that was the most honest film you could put in that category in years. It looks like Sony loved it as well, in the deadline article they say Sony wants “a director with a grasp of how to depict the way young people think and feel. This is critical because the Jamie Vanderbilt script covers the formative years of a high school-aged Peter Parker, and that POV is as important as the action sequences.” Check out my interview below and for more details on the Spiderman reboot check out deadline.com
Its very rare to have a romantic comedy men actually like and one from a guys point if view
Marc Webb: (Laughs) Thanks, to me it was less about the guys point of view, it was more of a persons point of view, a lot of times with these sort of films they show both points of view. It was more of his naïve approach to love, maybe its not as sophisticated as it should be and there’s a consequence to that, that’s what I identified with, there was a time in my life, when I was very much in his shoes (laughs)
I think that’s why a lot of guys seem to be relating to it, how important was it to get someone like Joey for the part because he is perfect?
Marc Webb: I met with a lot of actors, but he was the first one to get underneath it, the first time I met him, he asked why am I making this movie, and nobody had asked me that question before, I thought that’s a simple stupidly obvious question that’s great. We had a really good discussion that most of the films involved in romance have false hopes of love, especially for guys, who are often the sub plot, like with Hitch for example, there’s some really interesting things Will Smith is saying in the film and his charisma carries it, but the message if you wax your back and you learn to dance your gonna marry a super model, is fucking bullshit (laughs) its very reductive and hurtful, its very seductive to look like that but it’s false, so we wanted to play with a character that thought them sort of things and we had to subvert those things but without being cynical.
The films very honest.
Marc Webb: Yeah but I do know people who have actually found their girlfriend in High School when they were 17, I can think of three examples, they probably wouldn’t get the film so much. It probably wasn’t as emotionally resonate with them. But god bless them if their that lucky (laughs)
The chemistry was very strong between Zooey and Joseph how did you know they would hit it off so well?
Marc Webb: I wasn’t a hundred percent sure they would be great, we didn’t read them together, but I had seen them in Manic together, I met Joey and we were talking about who should play Summer, he said a couple people then he had a look in his eye and said Zooey, she’s got this energy, I knew through the look in his eye I could hang the movie on that. He got depressed though and said nobody will make a film with just us two because we’re not big enough stars, but one of the benefits of doing a film with such a small budget is that you don’t have to stuff a star into it. They’ve known each other and they respect each other which was so important, the engine of these sort of movies is the characters chemistry. They are great actors, Joey uses his physicality so well, we took away lines from the film while editing just because his body said all that needed to be said
(500) Days Of Summer is very unconventional, you know people love to categorise everything, how would you categorise it?
Marc Webb: The best way of categorising it is as a coming of age story masquerading as a romantic comedy, a love story implies certain things we wanted to side step. The same piece of information can look very different to someone else, like in The Graduate.
