Michael Caine Speaks On ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ “Cafe Scene”
Dec 6th
With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ out now on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download, Hero Complex spoke to Michael Caine about his work on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as Alfred – Bruce Wayne’s butler, guardian, and above all, friend. The actor said he distinctly remembers the morning Nolan turned up at his English country home with a screenplay for him to read, “My instant thought was, I’m going to be in one of these wonderful little dramas, murder thrillers. I’d love that. I thought to myself, I’m a bit old for Batman. So, I said, ‘Who am I going to play?’ He said, ‘The butler.’ I immediately thought I’ll be spending the entire series saying, ‘Dinner is served’ and ‘Would you like a coffee?’ I thought, well, I’ll read it and turn it down. I said, ‘OK, I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know whether I want to do it or not,’” he continued. “And this is where I first found out Chris is the most secretive director you’ve ever come across. It’s like working for MI6.”
(Yes, spoilers in this next paragraph) Michael Caine also discussed shooting the last scene in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ that takes place in a European cafe, saying, “There were no tears. We all knew the time had come to stop. “We knew we were now going to go on the downward stretch. We got better and better and better and then we thought, yeah, this is it. Forget it now. Let’s go and do something else. We were sort of sad but happy that we weren’t going to do another one and screw it up.” The two-time Oscar-winning actor went onto dispel any ambiguity about the film’s ending. Asked about the scene in which Alfred spies Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne and Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle sitting together at a neighboring table in that restaurant – a shot that suggests that Alfred’s wish for Bruce has come true, that his former charge has found a companion to bring him some measure of inner peace and happiness, enabling him to finally leave behind his self-appointed role as Gotham’s unofficial protector – Caine is quite emphatic. “They were there. They were real. There was no imagination. They were real and he was with Anne, the cat lady, and I was happy ever after for him as I told him during the picture.” Check out Hero Complex for the full interview – it’s a good’n!
Anne Hathaway Says She’d Love To Do A Selina Kyle/Catwoman Spin-Off
Dec 5th
Out and about on the promotional campaign for ‘Les Misérables,’ Anne Hathaway spoke to Access Hollywood about the possibility of reprising her role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman in a possible spin-off film, “No one’s talked to me about it,” she said, “I would love it. I actually, it’s so embarrassing, I was at a press Q & A thing the other night for a screening of ‘The Dark Knight,’ and the moderator asked me, ‘So what was it like to say goodbye to the character?’ And I burst into tears, because I miss her. It just makes me cry. I miss her. I love Selena so much and I love her presence in my life and getting to… I’m crying again.” She added: “So assuming there was enough Kleenex in the world, I would love to do a spin-off.”
One of my favourite ingredients of Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman movie was undoubtedly Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman. I thought she brought mischief, humour and humanity to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in abundance as this mysterious cat burglar desperate for a fresh start. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download now. ‘Les Misérables’ is pencilled in for a December 25th release in the US and a January 11th, 2013 release in the UK.

A new clip from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Blu-ray combo pack has arrived online thanks to the good people over at Yahoo! Movies. The clip centers on one of my favourite scenes in the film: the savage sewer fight between Christian Bale’s Batman and Tom Hardy’s Bane. The video features the likes of director Christopher Nolan, editor Lee Smith, Christian Bale and Tom Hardy discussing the scene. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download now.
’The Dark Knight Rises’ sees Christian Bale returning to the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman alongside series regulars Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Alfred (Michael Caine). Newcomers to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy include Tom Hardy’s Bane, Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, Marion Cotillard’s Miranda Tate, Matthew Modine’s Foley, and Ben Mendelsohn’s Daggett.
