Rachel Weisz Speaks On Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’
Aug 11th
Speaking to Stylist (via Digitalspy) while on the promotional rounds for ‘The Bourne Legacy,’ Rachel Weisz touched on a number of topics relating to the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise, her career, writing/directing, and her family. Furthermore, Weisz spoke briefly – and glowingly – about her work on Sam Raimi’s upcoming fantastical Wizard Of Oz spin-off, ’Oz: The Great and Powerful,’ where she plays Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East, “That was the most flat-out fun I have ever had making a film. It’s all in the Emerald City. James Franco is the Wizard and I am the Wicked Witch of the East, Mila Kunis is the Wicked Witch of the West and Michelle Williams is Glinda the Good Witch, very saintly and put-upon and beautiful. I got to shoot lightning out of my fingertips, fly around in a black sequined dress and wear lots of red lipstick. It was a complete antidote to doing Bourne – not that Bourne needed an antidote.”
‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot – fame and fortune are his for the taking – that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity – and even a bit of wizardry – Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ is pencilled in for a March 8th, 2013 release.

The good folks over at ShortList have commissioned this collection of alternative ‘The Bourne Legacy’ posters from some of their favourite artists (Chris Thornley, Brandon Schaefer, Ben Whitesell, Dan Keane, Matthew Ferguson, Midnight Marauder, Matt Needle, Maxime Pecourt, Fernando Reza). Co-written and directed by Tony Gilroy (The Devil’s Advocate, Michael Clayton), ‘The Bourne Legacy’ features a whole new hero (Jeremy Renner; The Hurt Locker, The Town, The Avengers, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) in the same universe as the first three Bourne films – though the character of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is absent. ’The Bourne Legacy’ comes to cinemas August 10th in the US and August 13th in the UK. The likes of Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Rachel Weisz and Scott Glenn co-star.
Tony Gilroy, the narrative architect behind the Bourne film series takes the helm ‘The Bourne Legacy,’ the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. Faced with the public and political fallout from the events of ‘The Bourne Ultimatum,’ the CIA decides to shut down “Operation Outcome,” the successor to “Operation Treadstone.” Cross, an agent of Operation Outcome, and Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz), a research scientist who helped create the Outcome agents, must find a way to escape before CIA agent Byer (Edward Norton) can have them assassinated. Check out my interviews for ‘The Bourne Legacy’ here: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, and Tony Gilroy. The official synopsis and production notes for ‘The Bourne Legacy’ can be read below the rest of the posters.

What was the appeal of stepping into this “Bourne” world and bringing this new character to life?
Jeremy Renner: There was so much developed in the three prior movies, as far as the tone and pace, the action, the authenticity….there were so many things I loved about the series. Then to see what Tony Gilroy did with the new material and with this new character, it really opened up the world. For me, it was really exciting. At first I was hesitant, I wasn’t quite sure how they would do it. But once I saw how clever it was I just jumped at the chance. It was a lot for me to play with. And what Matt Damon did, and what the previous directors have done, that was great. For those who love the franchise, I’m not replacing Matt, nor would I want to. It would never have been interesting if I was taking over and playing the same character. Matt is always the face of Jason Bourne and always should be. I liked this script because it was a very interesting way of continuing the story while honouring what came before. And with ‘The Bourne Legacy,‘ there’s a science to it that is very real, and why would it not be? It’s in this franchise where authenticity is its main foundation. There’s no superhero-ness to him, to my character, it’s just advanced science that is very plausible. And I think that’s exciting.

As the writer of the first three films, how was it keeping in the same tradition of what came before with the first three Bourne films, but then also taking it into a place that people may not expect?
Tony Gilroy: We wanted to create a larger conspiracy, the conceit here was that everything that we were seeing before in the previous films was sort of housed in one arena, and we’re sort of saying, “You’re only seeing one ring in the circus, one small portion of something that’s much larger.” When they finished the first three films, they wrapped up everything in such a perfect package, it was very difficult to go on from there – and a lot of smart spent a lot of time thinking about how to do that. The trail sort of ran cold. But there began talk how to go on, and my conversations, what I went back to them and said was, “What if we say that what happened in the three previous films was a small piece of something much larger, and that there was a much larger conspiracy outside of Treadstone and Jason Bourne?” And that got everybody very excited, and that began the conversations, it was a very sexy way of moving forward. In working it up, it didn’t really get exciting for me until we got the character of Aaron Cross and finding Aaron Cross, finding what his issues were, where he came from, what his problem would be, where he might go? That was when it got really interesting to me. You sort of march one stitch after another, it just grew to where we are here today (laughs).

Marta’s utterly devoted to her groundbreaking research as a biochemist, sort of ignoring the ethical conflict of her work. But then she’s forced to confront the morality of her choices when her life is in jeopardy?
Rachel Weisz: Yeah. I think the really interesting thing about Marta is that she’s working in science, at the very cutting edge of her field and she’s very excited by what she’s doing. She’s very highly paid, the project is very highly funded by the government. But there are certain things that she does not know and is not allowed to know. She’s told not to ask any questions, and I think that probably suits her because she’s a bright person and if she started to think about what she was doing, she would know that there’s a huge moral compromise going on. So it’s kind of, “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” She thinks she’s contributing to her country. But at the same time, she does secretly know that what she’s doing has great moral ambiguity to it. I would be less interested in her if she were just doing something good and saving the world. What she’s doing is a little dubious.
