‘Interstellar': Christopher Nolan Cites ‘Close Encounters’, ‘Jaws’, ‘2001’ & ‘The Right Stuff’ As Influences; 4 New TV Spots Released
While Christopher Nolan has previously noted that Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ is a major influence for ‘Interstellar,’ during a recent chat with Empire Magazine for their cover story on his latest film, the writer-director cited some further inspirations: “It’s not straight action and it’s not straight thriller,” Nolan says about the tone of his movie. “I do liken it to the blockbusters I grew up with as a kid. A lot of them by Spielberg. I don’t like talking about Spielberg too much because he was the director on the project before me and I don’t want to keep coming back to that, but the truth is, there’s a great spirit to films like ‘Close Encounters [Of The Third Kind]‘ and ‘Jaws‘ that I really wanted to try and capture, because I haven’t seen it in a very long time.”
Christopher Nolan pointed out that he isn’t trying to pay a literal to those films, like some other directors have in the past, “I mean, J.J. [Abrams] paid great homage to it in ‘Super 8,’ but it was a very literal homage. We’re trying to do: ‘What would that kind of film be now? Not in that period, as J.J. did, but now. It’s been a really interesting challenge,” Nolan added. “When you say you’re making a family film, it has all these pejorative connotations that it’ll be somehow soft. But when I was a kid, these were family films in the best sense, and they were as edgy and incisive and challenging as anything else on the blockbuster spectrum. I wanted to bring that back in some way.”
During a recent chat with Empire Magazine for their ‘Interstellar’ cover story, writer-director Christoper Nolan has said that his latest movie is like “a mirror image” of ‘Inception’. He continues, “It expands out in the way ‘Inception’ contracts inwards, it’s a very classically constructed movie, but the freshness of the narrative elements really enhance it.” Nolan goes on to say that ‘Interstellar’ is inspired by sci-fi from his childhood, “I liken it to the blockbusters I grew up with as a kid, family films in the best sense: edgy, incisive, challenging.”
Matthew McConaughey had the following to say about the film’s grand ambitions in the Empire piece, “This is the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film… This is the biggest film I’ve ever been a part of. This is one of the biggest films anyone’s ever been a part of.” Anne Hathaway concurs. “I am so excited for the world to receive this film, because there’s going to be a new conversation I believe will happen because of it.” She’s also quick to put to rest any fears of Christopher Nolan’s intellect getting in the way of emotions, “It’s not a dry, science-based film. It has a pulse. It’s got blood in its veins.” Pick up the latest issue of Empire for the full article.
