Pictures have released another 2012 “For Your Consideration” poster for the exhilarating conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ This particular poster puts forward the film for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (Screenplay by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan; story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer). Some of the key categories that the studio are pushing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ for Oscar recognition also include: Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Christian Bale), Best Actress (Anne Hathaway), Best Supporting Actor (Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Morgan Freeman), Best Supporting Actress (Marion Cotillard), Best Cinematography (Wally Pfister) and Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer). Speaking to Warner Bros UK for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download release, Michael Caine has revealed a fascinating piece of information regarding the backstory he created for Alfred – Bruce Wayne’s butler, guardian, and above all, friend. The Oscar-winning actor said, “What happens is I play the Butler (Alfred), so you haven’t got some great backstory for the blooming Butler. But I invented the backstory; which is Bruce’s father went to the SAS headquarters in Herefordshire, to see a friend, an officer. He was in the Officer’s Mess, and there was a Sergeant there, who had been badly wounded and couldn’t go back to the war and he didn’t want to go into Civvy Street. So he had took charge of the Sergeant’s Mess, and that was me. So what that is, you have this very tough ex-SAS guy, who knows all about drinks and service and getting sandwich’s and coffee, because he had to learn it for the Sergeant’s mess. So I told Christopher Nolan that story and he said, “I should have written it.” (Laughs) Actors always invent a backstory if the writer hasn’t.” Check out the full video below.

Jonathan Nolan Speaks On ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ & The Upcoming ‘Justice League’ Movie

The good people over at Empire recently spoke with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ co-writer and brother of director Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan, to talk on a number of subjects relating to Batman and the future of the DC Comics world at Warner Bros. With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ taking the superhero genre to a truly epic level, Nolan was asked if there was a sense that the filmmaking team could do anything they liked on that particular film after ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ replying, “The fun thing about writing in that environment is, with Emma [Thomas] and Chris and Wally [Pfister] and their team, whatever you want to do with a scene they would be able to achieve it. The beauty of that is you don’t have to sit there saying to yourself, ‘Well they’re not going to be able to do that!’ After Inception, Chris can do anything. You can write a sequence as huge as you like.”
Following up that answer, Empire raised the point of the Bane prologue in the context of this year’s films – ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Skyfall’ – in that there seems to be this trend of villains conspiring to get themselves captured. On that point, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter said, “Well, the Joker did that gag in The Dark Knight and that’s one of my favourite scenes in The Dark Knight! But I’m sure we were inspired by what went before — probably Bond movies or something else. There’s something great about it: in the face of certain defeat they have actually engineered the whole thing. There are similarities between Bane and The Joker in that sense. With both you think the shoe is on the other foot, and then you realise that the entire encounter has been engineered for them to get something they want. But The Joker has a particularly municipal aim. With this one, Bane’s out to do something really big. He is completely in charge of that situation. And unafraid, almost absurdly fearless. You’re never in any doubt with Bane. He is completely what he is. He’s absolutely… Out-of the box thinking. He does not take into consideration his fear.”

Michael Caine Speaks On ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ “Cafe Scene”

With ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ out now on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download, Hero Complex spoke to Michael Caine about his work on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as Alfred – Bruce Wayne’s butler, guardian, and above all, friend. The actor said he distinctly remembers the morning Nolan turned up at his English country home with a screenplay for him to read, “My instant thought was, I’m going to be in one of these wonderful little dramas, murder thrillers. I’d love that. I thought to myself, I’m a bit old for Batman. So, I said, ‘Who am I going to play?’ He said, ‘The butler.’ I immediately thought I’ll be spending the entire series saying, ‘Dinner is served’ and ‘Would you like a coffee?’ I thought, well, I’ll read it and turn it down. I said, ‘OK, I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know whether I want to do it or not,’” he continued. “And this is where I first found out Chris is the most secretive director you’ve ever come across. It’s like working for MI6.”
(Yes, spoilers in this next paragraph) Michael Caine also discussed shooting the last scene in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ that takes place in a European cafe, saying, “There were no tears. We all knew the time had come to stop. “We knew we were now going to go on the downward stretch. We got better and better and better and then we thought, yeah, this is it. Forget it now. Let’s go and do something else. We were sort of sad but happy that we weren’t going to do another one and screw it up.” The two-time Oscar-winning actor went onto dispel any ambiguity about the film’s ending. Asked about the scene in which Alfred spies Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne and Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle sitting together at a neighboring table in that restaurant – a shot that suggests that Alfred’s wish for Bruce has come true, that his former charge has found a companion to bring him some measure of inner peace and happiness, enabling him to finally leave behind his self-appointed role as Gotham’s unofficial protector – Caine is quite emphatic. “They were there. They were real. There was no imagination.
