Bolstering my excitement for what is already rapidly becoming my most anticipated project currently in development, Deadline report that Ridley Scott is commited to make ‘The Counselor’ his next film after ‘Prometheus.’ The screenplay comes from one of my favourite authors, Cormac McCarthy, whose critically acclaimed books have been adapted into ‘No Country for Old Men, ‘The Road,’ and ‘All The Pretty Horses.’ ‘The Councelor’ is the Pulitzer Prize-winning authors first screenplay. Insiders are describing it as “No Country For Old Men on steroids.” While details are sparse, the story is said to follow a lawyer who gets embroiled in the drug trade, and ends up fighting for his life.

To further add to my excitement for ‘The Councelor,’ the publications sources point towards Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ star Michael Fassbender playing the title role. While a formal offer hasn’t been made, they believe there’s a high likelihood that the actor will star in the film. Scott is apparently eyeing a May 1st start date, and he is talking to a number of high-profile actors to take part in the film. Producer Steve Schwartz has said the following about the ‘The Counselor’: “Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It’s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy’s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy’s most disturbing and powerful works.”

Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Finally! According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox has just closed a deal with Matthew Vaughn to come back and direct the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class,’ with Simon Kinberg writing the script and Bryan Singer back as producer. ‘X-Men: First Class’ was without doubt one of my favourite blockbusters of 2011, however, while I’m happy to see Vaughn back in the directors chair, it does alarm me that Kinberg is penning the script instead of Vaughn’s frequent collaborator Jane Goldman – who co-wrote ‘X-Men: First Class,’ ‘Kick Ass,’ ‘Stardust’ and ‘The Debt’ with Vaughn. Kinberg has a number of duds on his resume; ‘xXx: State of the Union,’ ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘Jumper.’ Fingers crossed my slight trepidation is unwarranted and Goldman comes on-board to touch up the script at a later date.

While there’s no confirmation, I’d assume the principal cast will reprise their roles, including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till, Caleb Landry Jones, Zoë Kravitz, Jason Flemyng and Jennifer Lawrence. There’s currently no word on what direction the sequel will go in. On the promotional rounds for the first film, Vaughn suggested that he might want to kick off the sequel with the Kennedy assassination. “I’ve got some ideas for the opening for the next film. I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he’s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world and mutants weren’t even mentioned. And we could go from there, and I’ve got some fun ideas about what other mutants to bring in.” Expect more details regarding this film soon.

20th Century Fox has premiered, via All Newz, this international poster for ‘Prometheus,’ Ridley Scott’s prequel to his 1979 classic sci-fi film, ‘Alien.’ This on-sheet provides us with a slightly clearer look at the mysterious monolithic head than the domestic poster. ’Prometheus’ features a stellar cast in Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Guy Pearce, Rafe Spall and Logan Marshall-Green. My excitement meter is officially set to ‘squeal like a Japanese schoolgirl’ for this film. ‘Prometheus’ is out in cinemas June 8th. The film is written by Damon Lindelof, Jon Spaihts and Ridley Scott.

This dynamic action-thriller directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh boasts a talented cast that includes Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton , Michael Douglas, Michael Angarano; and introduces mixed martial arts superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive. Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary. ‘Haywire’ is out now in the UK. It’s set for release January 20th in the US.

First off, how did you get involved with ‘Haywire’?

Antonio Banderas: Steven Soderbergh is one of those guys you say “yes” to, sometimes without reading the script. I had the opportunity….he called me twice in my career, but I couldn’t actually work with him. One was for ‘Che’ and the other one was ‘Traffic.’ I was signed at that particular time with other movies, but I knew. I had talked to him very early when I came to Los Angeles. He just presented ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotapes‘ and I loved that movie. We were talking about Almodóvar, because he’s a fan of Pedro. So at that time, he said to me, “I would like to have the opportunity to work together some day.” But many years, almost twenty years happened in the middle (laughs). He sent me the script. It was very confusing to me, to tell you the truth, but it was an immediate positive answer to work with him. I don’t regret it for a second. It was great.

How did you find working with Gina in Barcelona, in the square?

Antonio Banderas: It was a beautiful setting. It was actually my first shot, we had beautiful lighting, there was a beautiful sunset in Barcelona. The square is fantastic. Shooting in my home town, sorry, not my home town but my home country, it was fantastic for me. I was also very surprised by Gina, she’s amazing, very sweet, she has a spark about her. I think many people will relate to her in this film. I really feel like we’re witnessing the birth of a new star.

I didn’t have to fight with her in the movie. I have done a lot of movies where I had to fight a number of guys – fast guys, big guys, little guys, anything. I would have been very confident with her really, because she’s very precise, and fortunately, you don’t only see that in her fighting in the movie. What really shocked me when I saw it was how good she is, how wonderful she is as an actress. She’s beautiful. Her performance is easy-going. There is a sense of alert focus all the time, that front of a spy on her is demanded – she does that beautifully. I think you follow the story through her unbelievably well. What surprised us all was not that she could fight, we knew that, but her ability as an actress. After seeing the movie my wife is very curious to know her better, because she said to me when the movie finished, “She’s totally real,” and I totally agree with that.

Having worked with a number of great directors in your career, how did you find working with Steven Soderbergh, someone who’s got such a unique way of making movies?

Antonio Banderas: Not only just how quick he goes, which is fantastic for the actors and I suppose the rest of the team, but also the fact that he doesn’t use lights – and that happened in Barcelona, the first scene that I shot in the movie was how fast he shoots, and the non-use of lighting. We were shooting in the square plaza, it was unbelievable how fast we were moving, and at the same time, he didn’t do any type of coverage sometimes. We’d just shoot the scene, move on. Being a director myself – still a rookie, but a director (laughs) – I shoot everything. I shoot ash trays, anything. As much material as I can so I can look later in the editing room. This guy doesn’t shoot anything. It was just moving like, “We got it, moving on. Let’s go to the airport.” The same afternoon, we shot at the airport – boom, boom, boom, moving on. Only a director with tremendous confidence and self-assurance can do that.

The beard is great, where did the beard come from?

Antonio Banderas: It was an accident (laughs). I did a workshop in New York for ‘Zorba,’ a project I had in mind and may happen. I didn’t have anything to do and I wanted to do the workshop with a beard because I just pictured the character of Zorba with a big beard. I was going to shave the next day, but I had an interview with Steven for the movie. He wanted to see me here in Los Angeles, and he said, “I like the beard.” I said, “No, please. I haven’t shaved in two months.” “No, no the beard is fine. It’s a different you.” So I was trapped with my beard for another three to four months (laughs). My wife was not very happy about it.

The interesting thing is I finished the movie, I wrapped in New Mexico, and I went to Spain and was doing the movie with Pedro Almodóvar, and I think it was the last week I was working with him. Steven called me and he said, “I just put together the movie. Your character is very enigmatic and very shadowy. I like him, but we have to close him. It’s my fault. I’m just going to write a couple of scenes for him that is going to explain the whole entire thing. Actually, you became the mastermind of the whole entire operation, and you’re going to have a scene with Gina.” And I said, “Steven, I am still working with Pedro and I will be free in a week and I don’t have the beard.” And he said, “We’ll build it for you.” So I came a year after we finished the movie, and we did those new scenes, which is actually the end of the movie. With the beard, we did a couple of scenes underground with the French actor, and then shaved for the last moment with her.

Did you feel different without the beard?

Antonio Banderas: Yes, those scenes are….like a mask. When you have a beard you act differently. It’s almost like working with different languages. I’ve done movies in Italy, for example, and you start doing things with the hands. All these kinds of things are different. You act differently with a beard – I don’t know how to explain it (laughs). Also, I felt older. I can actually hide behind my beard, in a way. It’s interesting for my character because he’s the guy that nobody knows what he’s really doing – not until the end. I think it was a smart decision on Steven Soderbergh’s part. This is the guy that nobody is paying attention to. He never got beat up by the girl, but he is the one who is cooking everything in the background.

Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who knew her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, ‘Haywire’ is released January 18th and stars Gina Carano, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Channing Tatum.

What the process of getting this role like?

Gina Carano: I got the phone call after I lost my first fight to “Cyborg” Santos, and I didn’t really want to speak to anybody at the time. I was bummed. I had a black eye, and my agent called me and he said that this director wanted to meet me, and I didn’t know who he was. I decided to pick Steven up at the train station in San Diego. We had a four hour lunch and at the end of it he offered me a movie. So, there was no auditioning. I don’t know what that is like yet. When offered me the part I said, “Absolutely.” He was so professional, so normal, just an intelligent human being that I felt it would be a pleasure to work….I was incredibly thankful, especially after I got completely pummelled by someone (laughs).

How did your interest in Mixed Martial Arts start?

Gina Carano: It’s funny. I grew up on ‘Anne of Green Gables’ and then after that the earlier ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ I didn’t really watch action film, but then I dated somebody who was a big fan of Bruce Lee. I know that sounds really weird coming from a tomboy, but I think I balanced myself out that way by watching those films (laughs). I didn’t really have somebody I was looking at to mimic in fighting either. I think I was always the son my dad never had. I have two very thin and beautiful sisters so, I was always like the brute and kind of the middle child.

I was a little bit of a recluse. I got in a lot of street fights. I was dating someone who realized that maybe this wasn’t the best lifestyle. He walked into Master Toddy’s Muay Thai in Las Vegas and always wanted me to come in and watch him. And I saw a huge transformation in a human being I was close to and so I finally went in and I became completely addicted. I just threw myself into it. As a female, go exert yourself on something. And realize how good it feels to let that all out.

Did you have to alter your training a bit to get ready for this film?

Gina Carano: Absolutely. They had me getting up at five o’clock, and then I did three hours of stunts, and then three hours of Mossad secret service training with guns….pretty much boot camp, and getting yelled at. Then getting stalked and stalking other people. And then after that I did strength and conditioning. I’m not afraid of guns, I just didn’t know how to use them, so my trainer put me through the gun training, entering and exiting a building. Aaron Cohen, who was my trainer, he told stories, I read his book, he’s like a brother to me now. He definitely put me in the mindset. I really wanted to represent Aaron really well, to get everything as spot on as possible.

What did you learn from working with this cast? And how was it for you working in all these different cities?

Gina Carero: I honestly have to say this is one the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had. I got to travel to places I’ve never been. I was surrounded by the most beautiful people. I have always seen these people on television, but being around them and knowing I haven’t done this before, I’ve never been so vulnerable in my life! I woke up every day and I felt like I was on some strange drug of adrenaline (laughs). I almost didn’t want to see the movie, because I felt every part of it. It was my first time.

I’ve been to locations where I’ve had to train and fight. I had been to Thailand a lot, but I had never been to Dublin, Barcelona. It was wonderful, these places are so rich and so beautiful. I kept thinking that never in wildest dreams I’ll be in all these places. There I was sprinting through the streets of Barcelona, the colours, you couldn’t make a better movie set, they’re so rich and beautiful – and the people are gorgeous. You kind of open up your mind and realise how big the world is, but at the same time how small it is. There’s so many wonderful cities on this planet, I few very fortunate seeing a few of them for ‘Haywire.’

‘Haywire’ is released in cinemas January 18th.

I was told you were meant to work with Steve Soderbergh before ‘Haywire‘?

Ewan McGregor: Yes. We spoke along time ago about doing a film together and it didn’t work out for one reason or another. Sometimes if that happens, or if you’ve turned down a director, I don’t think I turned it down, it was just a scheduling issue I think – but then that can be it, the director won’t come back to you (laughs). But I’ve always liked Steven Soderbergh as a director, I’ve liked his films. I like the fact that you don’t know what he’s going to do next, the fact that he’s turned his hand to many different kinds of films, genres. As an actor he’s definitely on the list of directors you want to work with.

What was his pitch to you for this film?

Ewan McGregor: When he came to me with this, I was excited at first that he had come to me, and then we sat and had lunch and he showed me an article in Vanity Fair about the guy who runs Blackwater, the private army. It was a very interesting article and he was like, “This is the kind of guy I want you to play.” The script was very, very strong. It was a really good piece of writing. It had good strong elements from, obviously, fight movies, which I am not familiar with particularly. There was a spy element: what it is like to be an undercover spy – James Bond. And at the centre of it is this incredible strong female lead, which is unusual in a film like this, I think. So it was very intriguing, and for me personally, the opportunity to work with Steven was very strong.

How was it working with Gina Carano? She’s a machine in this film.

Ewan McGregor: When we first met, Steven also talked about Gina. I’m not a fight fan so I wasn’t aware of her, but when I got back from lunch I looked her up on Youtube and I was watching her videos with my mouth wide open thinking, “Oh my god!” (Laughs) I was then fascinated to meet her and I didn’t know what to expect. But when I did meet Gina I was totally taken with her and surprised by her. For a professional fighter she’s very gentle, feminine. When she talks about fighting she talks about the training. For her, I think it’s almost like a Zen feeling, a spiritual feeling looking towards the fight. I never heard her say anything about trying to hurt people, having a desire for that, that’s not what drives her. She was great.

Can you talk about your character Kenneth?

Ewan McGregor: Kenneth has been in the military, maybe special forces. He’s come out of the military and he’s taken the skills that he’s learned, probably a lot of people he’s met, and he forms a private security company. His set of operatives are available to hire by the government or by the FBI, whoever it may be, to go into dangerous situations. In this instance, in the beginning of our film, to extract someone from a hostage situation. There are people like this, probably a lot more than there ever used to be. They do the work that the military would do, but they do it for money. Kenneth is about the money.

He has a back-story with Mallory….

Ewan McGregor: I think he was familiar with Mallory when he was in the forces, probably he met her somewhere. But they’ve had a relationship. He’s brought her into his company and she’s sort of his secret weapon because she’s a woman, she’s incredibly tough, she’s deadly and he knows that probably in that world it’s handy to have someone like that.

At first I don’t think he knows that she wants to leave. He sends her off on a job here, a job there, he keeps her busy. The film starts in Barcelona, then she comes home to San Diego and he immediately arrives, she’s still unpacking, she’s in a new apartment, and he says, “I need you to go to Ireland.” He’s probably got whiff that she wants to leave, and also I think he believes she’s become too important to the clients, in that they all want her. That threatens him in a way for his business. He says in a scene with Michael Douglas, “It’s not good precedent for my company that if she doesn’t go I don’t get the job.” So she’s become almost too powerful, she’s endangering his company, his future, so he sends her off to Ireland.

How was it going into the fight scene with Gina?

Ewan McGregor: I felt fine because by that time I got to know her really well. We were in very safe hands with Gina because she’s so precise. I really never felt there was ever an issue or worry to get hurt. I didn’t feel like that. The only time I did get hurt was when I accidentally punched Gina in the head (laughs). I had three punches. One, two, and the third punch had to go right over Gina’s head and I messed it up. I punched her solidly right in the side of her head, and she came straight up to me and said, “Are you okay?” And I was trying to be very butch, “Yeah, I’m fine,” but I had broken three fingers, and Gina didn’t feel a thing (laughs). We were in very safe hands. The only scary thing is Gina’s fitness is just unbelievable. Because I watched her do some of the fight scenes in New Mexico with stunt men, and they would do a take, and at the end of the take, Steven would say, “Cut!” And the stuntmen were, like….destroyed. They would be like (heavy breathing noise), sweating, and Gina would be like, “All right, ready for another take?” We were doing a fight in sand. My fitness is not very great. My worry was more about being able to keep going through the day. It was a long day.

Hero Complex has released this intriguing new image of Noomi Rapace (and some mysterious “Space Jockey” suits) in ‘Prometheus,’ Ridley Scott’s prequel to his 1979 classic sci-fi film, ‘Alien.’ The image accompanies comments from writer Damon Lindelof regarding the scope of the film: “The movie is definitely epic in its scope. One of the filmmakers that we ended up talking about to a fair degree of redundancy was David Lean, who directed ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ We wanted to make the movie feel big by having the characters be small in big spaces, That connected to the larger themes we were talking about — that we’re all just these little gnats crawling around on our little planet.”

Alongside Noomie Rapace, ‘Prometheus’ features a stellar cast in Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Guy Pearce, Rafe Spall and Logan Marshall-Green. My excitement meter is officially set to ‘squeal like a Japanese schoolgirl’ for this film. ‘Prometheus’ is released in cinemas June 8th.

Aaron gets pretty conflicted in this movie.…

Channing Tatum: Yeah, very! Aaron is a contract soldier that will go in and do anything you pretty much ask of him, pay him. From kidnapping to I’m sure assassinations if he had to. As a lot of soldiers do, I’ve never been a soldier but I’ve talked to a tonne of them, you follow orders. The military, the governmental military is more of a organised thing that you can’t really double cross anybody there, or you probably can but I just don’t know about it (laughs), but you’re told what to do and you go and do it. You don’t expect your superiors to double cross you. But the private sector, it’s a lot more grey. Everybody is trading people, trading lives. Doing things I don’t think I could even imagine. Aaron, he does listen to the wrong people, probably because of money.

The diner scene is vicious, you and Gina made me look at a coffee pot in a different way.

Channing Tatum: (Laughs) Believe it or not that scene was fairly effortless. I can’t describe to you how easy the whole thing was. Look, it was a very intense, very beautiful, violently beautiful scene. But I’ve never done anything which has been as easy! We shot it in half a day, dialogue and everything. I think it’s a testament to Steven Soderbergh knowing exactly how to shoot action, a perfect way to make it feel real and intense. Also, the choreography was just unreal, 8711 was the stunt crew that came in and did it – they’re just at the top of their game. Then you have Gina, probably the best athlete I’ve ever had the opportunity to move with. I dance and I like to train and fight a little bit, but she’s just such a technician. The way she precisionaly holds her body and moves with you is so safe, you feel so taken care of.

Having that background in dance, I’m sure that must inform your movements for fight choreography?

Channing Tatum: Oh yeah. When you’re swinging as hard as you can and your missing each other by centimeters, it’s a little nerve-racking, but most of all it is like dancing. I was never a trained dancer, I never took a class, but when you dance and you know control, you know that relationship to someone, distance, things like that – it can be very fluid. And when you have someone like Gina who knows control so well, it just sinks, it does make it easy.

Overall how did you find working with Gina as Mallory? In the film she’s a machine.

Channing Tatum: She’s the real deal. It’s just honest, she’s gifted with a skill set, and that’s what Mallory is in the movie. She’s smart, she’s tough, she’s lethal. But I guess overall she’s just built really well, both physically and mentally. I think that’s really rare, especially in movies where everyone is flawed (laughs). She is a machine.

How was it for you working with Steven Soderbergh on a film like this? Bringing his unmistakable style to such a fast-paced, vigorous action flick.

Channing Tatum: I thought it was so smart of him, I had a conversation with him later…..he could have done the Bourne’s, he could have done the Bond’s, but he really didn’t want to do a gadget driven action movie. I think he was really smart in that he found the one little caveat of action that hasn’t been explored – a really realistic female driven, I don’t wanna call it ’spy movie’ because she’s not a spy, she’s an operative….an operative movie (laughs). With Steven it’s one of those things, you just dream to get that call. Then when you read the script you’re like, “Oh! Yeah, I’m doing this!” You just want to do the movie because it’s Steven Soderbergh, but then the material is great and original – even though action movies, spy movies, assassin movies, they’ve been done every which way. With Steven you always feel like he’s on the cutting edge of something. You just want to be on board with a guy like that.
