The cast alone is the definition of badass – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Trejo. It looks like a complete throwback to the action flicks of the 80’s (a guilty pleasure of mine). If you like your films profound and thought provoking this is not for you, yet if bullets, explosions, bombs, guns and chase scenes are up your alley, this is a must!
Playing on stereotype’s, The Expendables is pretty much for men, what Sex and The City is for women. The majority of the actors above have possessed a unique ability that makes them seemingly invulnerable to virtually everything thrown at them during their respected film careers. This skill along with them all being in one film together really should make this film epic, it’s probably 1,222,222,333,333,333,333/1 odds to be critically acclaimed, but you know what, it’s not supposed to make sense it’s supposed to be awesome! THE EXPENDABLES is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers. The Expendables stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
These three pictures from Tarsem Singh’s upcoming film Immortals cover three essential themes of any sword and sandal film, a muscular hero – Henry Cavill as Theseus, a beautiful heroin – Freida Pinto as Phaedra and finally a menacing villain with a couple scars on his face – Mickey Rourke looking as ragged as ever as King Hyperion. I’m easily taken in by sword and sandal epics, especially those with a couple actors I really like – Mickey Rourke, John Hurt. Happily after his Oscar nomination for The Wrestler (which he was robbed of winning) Mickey Rourke’s comeback trail doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon, he’s also got Tony Scott’s Potsdamer Platz , Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables and Passion Play in cinemas the next year or so.
With Clash Of The Titans and Percy Jackson the Greek God’s must have been twisting their long white beards in disgust with 2010’s films based around Greek mythology, from the looks of it Immortals seems to be a hell of a lot better than those two films, the story follows a young warrior Theseus who leads his men into battle with the immortal Greek gods to defeat evil and the powerful elder gods of the Titans in order to save mankind. Pinto will portray Phaedra, an oracle priestess who must join Theseus — played by Henry Cavill (”The Tudors”) — on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting. Immortals is set for release November the 11th, 2011. Via iamrogue.
I’ve been really looking forward to this, the first Iron Man film helped raise the bar of Comic Book inspired films, along with The Dark Knight (to a lesser extent but it raised the bar all the same). This trailer has added to my excitement, it’s rare with a film that I like EVERY actor, especially an action film. Also I’m extra jealous that Scarlett Johanssen is spoken for, Ryan Reynold’s I just want to put it out there, for 10 seconds after watching the trailer I truly hated you. Look out for this May 7th.
Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark, the wealthy playboy whose exploits as Iron Man are now public knowledge after his admission at the close of the first film. In the follow-up, Stark is pitted against his Russian arch nemesis, Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), and corporate rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Also making their Marvel debuts are Scarlett Johansson as the sexy Russian spy Black Widow, and Don Cheadle, who takes over the role of Colonel James Rhodes from Terrence Howard
Expendables is in cinemas August 20th, 2010, the films cast is an action fans dream – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Stone Cold Steve Austin, David Zayas, Giselle Itié, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brittany Murphy, Charisma Carpenter, Liam Hemsworth and Gary Daniels. Sylvester Stallone recently talked to Entertainement Weekly about the scene with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. Looking forward to this, definitely one to watch with your mates!
Stallone said the superstar-summit scene takes place in a church, where Willis’ nasty antagonist has summoned Stallone’s macho mercenary to finally meet him face-to-face, take measure of him, and possibly hire him for a death-defying mission. But just as the meeting gets under way and smartass smalltalk is made, in walks another killer-for-hire — Stallone’s longtime rival, who Willis has also invited to this job interview: Ah-nuld.
“Bruce says ‘Well, there’s one other person I want to talk to before I hire you,” says Stallone. “And then Arnold, who plays my old rival, walks in. We have a history together. And we go back and forth and I tell him that I should have shot him a long time ago when I had the chance. Then it goes on from there. And here we are, the three of us trying to man up to one another, playing off of who we are, using our baggage in this one scene.”
Stallone says that big scene with Willis, Schwarzenegger, and himself would amount to more than a cameo or a stunt in the final cut of the film. “It’s probably going to be about 5 minutes of screen time.” Which, if you think about it, is kind of impressive considering that Willis and Schwarzenegger were only on the L.A. set for 6 hours. “We only had them for that one day and then Bruce had to go off to Istanbul and Arnold had to go back and do his governmental stuff. But I was impressed because they got up at 5:30 in the morning to do this.”
When asked if the Governator was rusty since he hasn’t been on screen since 2004’s Around the World in 80 Days and has spent most of his time in Sacramento, Stallone laughs and says no. “It’s like riding a bicycle.” Then he adds, “It’s funny because between the three of us, if you add up all the box office and DVD rentals and all of that, there’s like $15 billion in that one scene!”
