Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and producers Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter) unleash an epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in ‘Immortals,’ a stylish and spectacular 3-D adventure. As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful. The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity. ‘Immortals’ is set for release November 11th 2011.

What was it about ‘Immortals’ and Tarsem Singh that interested you?

Mickey Rourke: The main reason I took the movie was to work with Tarsem. I saw his commercial reel and I saw the interesting Nike reel he did where he had the faces on all the athletes, the masks. He brought some drawings of the different characters as well. I thought this guy is very prepared, you know? And I like working with guys who do a very long pre-production because they know exactly what they want. And because he comes out of commercials, he has such a fabulous look, the way he lights everything. He can take this material to another level. I don’t necessarily know if I would have done this movie if it wasn’t Tarsem involved.

What’s nice about Tarsem is to hear about someone who’s so technical, and then when I get on the floor, before I go over to cut somebody’s head off, Tarsem would say, “Well, could you step over there and pick up that flower petal, or could you stop there and rub that apple before you cut his head off.” He’d give little adjustments to choices I made, and it would become better because of these little tweaks he gave me. That’s what acting is all about, it’s a collaborative effort to find the most interesting choices and make it entertaining. Also not so it’s just, “That’s the evil guy, that’s the good guy.”

How was that, finding the reasoning for Hyperion’s actions?

Mickey Rourke: I never look at the guy as that pure evil, I always try to find there’s a reason – maybe it’s Theseus’ problem, you know, why I behave that way (laughs). It’s like territory, it’s like, “This is my territory, I’ve got a reason to do whatever I want in my territory,” or you could say in my house. He considered everything his house.

Once again, working with Tarsem and Henry. Henry’s very young, enthusiastic. He was running around doing push-ups and cartwheels (laughs), I remember when I used to get that excited. It’s nice to work with someone who’s beginning their career, seeing them so gung-ho. Tarsem was excited. I worked a total of 8 days maybe on the movie.

Did you have a favourite scene?

Mickey Rourke: I think my favourite was the Pomegranate scene, I actually spoke in that scene (laughs). This scene had quite a bit of dialogue, and I was trying to read the cue-card through the fog and the smoke, because there was quite a lot to say. But the dialogue was written very well, and also what was going on in the moment, I think what was going on was that I was torturing a poor soul, with the sh*t that was coming out of my mouth (laughs), it was a lot of fun.

What was it like physically preparing for the role?

Mickey Rourke: I had just come out of surgery. I had torn my bicep and I just had bicep surgery – I lost my whole tendon. The operation didn’t work, so I was actually worried about just being able to tie my shoes. It’s one of the reasons I wore a gauntlet at the top of my right arm, I had a big scar.

I’m going to have to have a cadaver tendon put in to fix it. I was arm-wrestling some rugby players at four in the morning. We had been drinking at a pub in London and I lost, but we became good friends. They gave me a magazine about their club, they play with a team called the Huddersfield Bears and we became friends. I was reading the magazine and there was an article about Gareth Thomas, the rugby player who announced that he’s gay. I came back home and was watching ‘Pardon the Interruption’ and they were talking about Gareth. They were saying how brave he was for coming out and announcing it. I got on a plane and I met Gareth and I asked him, “I’m wanna make your life story.” I think I beat the studio out there by about 4 days, and he gave me the rights. We’re going to do this movie now. He announced his retirement and hopefully in March.…I’ve been writing the script for the past year. Hopefully, we’ll do it in March.

With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity. ‘Immortals’ is set for release November 11th 2011.

What was the appeal of this role and ‘Immortals’?

Luke Evans: For me it was a big challenge to take on the role of Zeus, especially with Tarsem’s idea of where he wanted Zeus to come from. He didn’t want him to be this traditional Zeus as the older man, the Laurence Olivier, Liam Neeson angle….he wanted him to look young, even though he was old. That presented a lot of challenges for myself, that was basically what drew me to the script, it drew me to the project. Also to work with Tarsem Singh, I respect his work, I’ve followed his films, he has an amazing catalogue of films. To work with someone like Tarsem you know you’re going to have a very unique experience. Tarsem has energy in full measure, and it never really goes below 100%. When you come on set with him, you basically feel that you either have to match it, or go away and have a word with yourself, and come back and match it. You feel that you’re short-changing him otherwise because of the fact he comes with so much passion. He’s developed such a beautiful world that we ended up working on, that you want to just have integrity for what he’s done. It’s a blast working with him, and also he’s a lovely guy. We hung out with him when he wasn’t on set, on his days off. It was great.

Zeus helps mould Theseus….

Luke Evans: Zeus’ objective is to find a leader, he chooses Theseus because he sees something in him. Theseus is not afraid to stand up for who he is and what he believes in. Zeus sort of moulds him into a leader without him even realising, he learns how to fight, he’s a very strong man. In ‘Immortals’ you really get to see how a character develops, Zeus stands back a lot of the time and just allows Theseus to find his own way.

This is a physical role, aesthetically to look the part and also with the fighting. How did you prepare to play Zeus?

Luke Evans: It was intense, it was the most intense physical thing I’ve ever done. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. To be sent to Montreal, to work with experts in training, physical training, personal training, working with stuntmen, then working with Henry Cavill for several weeks – it was immense, it was really an experience that not only changed me physically for life, I’ve never gone back to the physique I had before this film (laughs), it changed my discipline, it changed my education of what diet means, my training…..it was amazing.

Speaking to Henry, he said you guys had a day off once in a while, what was that like?

Luke Evans: Yeah, they used to call it a cheat day, because your body can’t keep going when you’re training that amount and that intensely. So thank god we got these cheat days (laughs), without it I think we would have imploded with fatigue, we wouldn’t have been nice people to be around (laughs). But this cheat day, it was nice, we got to hang out and have fun, relax on the diet. We got to have a good steak and fries, Montreal does some good steaks, real good (laughs)!

Was it hard to find the right balance between playing this God as this powerful being, while also making him relatable?

Luke Evans: I think that Gods could easily be boring, if you just think of them as a God. In the films we’ve seen with the Gods, they’ve always been sitting in thrones with big beards. They don’t do anything, they talk about stuff, they go, ‘Oh, we’ll send someone down to deal with that, but we’re not leaving,’ whereas in ‘Immortals’ Tarsem wanted the Gods to be prime physical specimens that went and did the action, and did the fighting. They can go down and be human-looking and do all that stuff. That’s what makes it interesting. That’s the bits you hang onto, so that you make sure that they have human qualities and they’re interesting.

With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity. ‘Immortals’ is set for release November 11th 2011. Look out for a more in-depth interview with Freida Pinto, Kellan Lutz and the rest of the cast closer to the films release date.

What was it about ‘Immortals’ that interested you, this new take on Greek mythology?

Freida Pinto: Tarsem Singh, the way he visually brought out the nuances in ‘The Fall,’ the way it appealed to all five senses. I knew that ‘Immortals’ was going to be done in a very similar way. For me Tarsem’s vision was really determined before the film was made, so even though they had a script – he was a writer for the visual part of it, and knowing that he made films like ‘The Fall’ and ‘The Cell,’ and had directed R.E.M’s ‘Losing My Religion,’ you see all these amazing things in terms of the others that he’d shown in the past, I just knew that it was going to be different than what I had done in the past, the three other films that I had done before.

I guess it was the way he sold the movie at the first meeting that I had with him, how he envisioned my character and the film to be. And what I think is amazing is that he decided to play it not like the typical Greek epic, because I think we’ve seen that, that’s been done many times before. This was his take, it was his vision, and the studio was going to let him do it. You just feel comfortable knowing that you will have certain things that you can contribute, and he will be open to taking suggestions, because it really doesn’t depend on a book or something that someone else has written about the character. So that was nice, the openness was really great.

How about you Kellan?

Kellan Lutz: I loved the story, I loved the script, I loved everything the writers did with it. I found it very new and original, it’s not really coming off a book, a comic book, a story, or a movie that’s already been done before, it’s an original script. It’s really great to be a part of something that an audience has no idea what’s going to happen, because they haven’t seen the movie already, or read the book already. Also I love Greek mythology, I love Poseidon, I grew up doing reports on Poseidon. It’s really cool that I can play him.

Freida, can you talk a bit about Phaedra’s special powers?

Freida Pinto: She has the power of foresight, she can see the future but her visions aren’t very clear to her. So that kind of leads her to doubt many times, I think the fact that she does get this vision of Theseus, but doesn’t completely trust him, it says a lot about her not really knowing what the vision really means. So it’s only as things progress that she realises he is the guy who can save the people.

Was it hard to find the right balance between playing the Gods as these powerful beings, while also making them relatable, in some way?

Kellan Lutz: You don’t look at them as Gods, you make layers. I’m a brother and I’m an uncle, so for my character, I loved playing the uncle role. I have a funny uncle, and he’s who I go to when I’m in trouble and I can’t talk to my mum. He’s always there to give me advice, but to also make jokes with you (laughs). He’s just always been there for me. That’s what I drew from for Poseidon. You’re just made into a God by the costume your wearing, and with the cool weapons, and just being around the scenario that you’re in.

How was it working with Tarsem Singh?

Freida Pinto: Tarsem is great. He’s really patient, very encouraging, and most importantly open to suggestions – which sometimes directors may or may not be. He gave the actors creative license to do what they wanted with the lines, as long as it made sense (laughs). He was always hands on with whatever information you wanted. One of the most interesting things about Tarsem is that he’s such a hyperactive character (laughs), so hyperactive! He’s so helpful as well, if I was ever in doubt about anything, he would come and help me.

Look out for a more in-depth interview with Henry Cavill and the rest of the cast closer to the films release date.

What was the appeal of this project?

Henry Cavill: Tarsem Singh, the way he described each individual piece, just his vision for the movie. Also, when you’re growing up as a boy, the idea of playing a sword-wielding hero, and beating up the bad guys is always a fun thing, and you get to play it in the big leagues, and for real, and get the real costumes on, and have all the special effects. But ultimately it was down to director Tarsem Singh. Reading the script, it had a few kinks in it initially, but Tarsem’s vision was the one thing that sold me on it, and his passion for it. Even if Tarsem came to me with a piece of wood and pretended it was a script and said, ‘No really, I’m really passionate about this,’ he would be able to sell me on it, and it would be an amazing piece of wood (laughs).

The world Tarsem creates in this film is striking…

Henry Cavill: The artistry that Tarsem has added to this, it makes it a different word. It is a different world, it’s not a world we would necessarily recognise, parts of it are, but it is straight out of Tarsem’s mind. It’s new, it’s stunning, it’s beautiful, it’s breathtaking. Yet it’s also dark, brutal and scary at the same time. It definitely provides a feast for the eyes, it really gets your adrenaline going as well.

This is a physical role, aesthetically to look the part and also with the fighting. How did you prepare to play Theseus?

Henry Cavill: We were given certain briefs that actually changed as we were training. They wanted photographic evidence of how I was doing so it was very difficult initially. Then when we finally got our groove, we finally got our brief on what they wanted me to look like, we just trained and trained and trained and trained and trained and trained…..it was 8 hours a day in the gym, 5 days a week – a crazy amount of training. We worked on my dynamic movement, so when it came to me learning the choreography, the stunts, it wasn’t as taxing as it could have been. The physical training was extensive and exhausting. I think I was doing 9 to 5 at one stage with the training.

That must have helped you get the ball rolling with the training for Superman?

Henry Cavill: Yeah, I certainly learnt a lot, just going through that process once. You learn how to do it more efficiently the second time. Although I’ve had a trainer both times, it’s a very different kind of thing for Superman. For example, I’m 25 pounds heavier now than I was in ‘Immortals.’ That is enough said really. It’s prepared me mentally. When you have that negotiation, when you’re training and you get to that rep which is difficult, and you know you’ve got 10 more reps to go in that 1 set, and another 5 sets after that, and you say, ‘I don’t really have to do this. I can do something else. If I just put the weights down, and have a bit more rest, it will be fine.’ It teaches you how to negotiate and win the negotiation, and how to notice the lie in your head, which is like, ‘Oh, it hurts, it’s dangerous,’ as opposed to, ‘Yeah, it hurts, but that’s good.’ As my new trainer says, ‘It doesn’t have to be fun to be fun.’ That’s very telling.

The fight with King Hyperion is vicious….

Henry Cavill: The fight with King Hyperion is a brutal, messy….it’s just two exhausted men who want to tear each others throats out, it’s non-stylised – it was a painful experience (laughs). It’s in a small space, they’re just throwing each other against the walls, hitting each other with anything that may kill them. This is the human representation of the conflict between the Gods and the Titans, these are the chosen champions on either side. And this is not sort of Wu Shu Martial Arts, or anything like that – there’s some Jiu Jitsu, there’s some grappling in there, but these guys…..they basically just kick the crap out of each other (laughs), that was fun.

Relativity Media has debuted this first clip from Tarsem Singh’s awesome looking mythical adventure flick ‘Immortals.’ With both ‘Clash Of The Titans’ and ‘Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief,’ the Greek God’s must have been twisting their surly beards in disgust with 2010′s cinematic offerings based around Greek mythology.
Coventry Telegraph have unleashed this final trailer for Tarsem Singh’s awesome looking mythical adventure flick ‘Immortals.’ With both ‘Clash Of The Titans’ and ‘Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief,’ the Greek God’s must have been twisting their surly beards in disgust with 2010′s cinematic offerings based around Greek mythology. From the looks of it ‘Immortals’ seems to be profoundly better than those two flicks. ‘Immortals’ is set for release November 11th, 2011. The film stars Henry Cavill, Freida Pinto, Mickey Rourke, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Robert Maillet, Luke Evans and Corey Sevier.

Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders–including visionary priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff) – one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and producers Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter) unleash an epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in Immortals, a stylish and spectacular 3-D adventure.

Hot the heels of news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis have closed deals to reprise their roles from ‘The Expendables’ in a more substantial capacity in ‘The Expendables 2,’ Sylvester Stallone has now confirmed that he’s also added Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme to the mix and, fingers crossed, we may even see Nicolas Cage and John Travolta getting in on the mayhem too: “We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one. We’ve got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage.”

On the subject of John Travolta joining the cast, Stallone had the following to say: “It’s possible. The one thing I’ve learned is what is a fact on Monday is a complete fallacy on Tuesday. A lot of it is scheduling. It’s not financial. It’s just that Bulgaria is definitely a jaunt. It’s a commitment, you know what I mean? Especially in the dead of winter.”

The original movie made $274.5 million in cinemas worldwide last year – big chee$e. There’s currently no official word on what ass-kicking shenanigans the gang will be up to in the sequel. Alongside Sylvester Stallone, the sequel will bring back Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Jet Li. Rumours are have also pointed towards Donnie Yen joining the fray. Filming for ‘The Expendables 2′ will begin in at the end of the month. Lionsgate will once again release the Millennium Films-produced actioner. ’The Expendables 2′ is scheduled for a August 17th 2012 release date.
