Edward Norton Interview For Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom’
May 26th
‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is the new movie directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore). Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff, Captain Sharp. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader, Scout Master Ward. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bishop. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Bob Balaban; and introduces Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as Sam and Suzy, the boy and girl. In cinemas now, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ marks Wes Anderson’s first live-action film since 2007′s ‘The Darjeeling Limited.’
I know you’ve wanted to work with Wes Anderson for a while now. How did you first correspond with each other?
Edward Norton: I’ll take credit for initiating our friendship (laughs), because I wrote him a letter after I saw ‘Rushmore.’ It was full of appreciation for that film. Then, not long after that he saw me in a play in New York, and he wrote me a very beautiful letter about it. That sort of initiated a correspondence that we’ve kept up over the years – without actually seeing each other that much. It was one of those things, you hope and you wait and then something comes together. When he did give me a ring and say, “I’ve written something that I’d love you to look at a role in.” I just said, “I’m in!” He said, “Well, read it, it’s odd,” I said, “I don’t care, lets do it.” (Laughs).

I really enjoyed the performances of Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as these two 12-year-olds. How did you cast them?
Wes Anderson: I’ve done a number of movies that feature children, or young people, in pretty large roles. I always try to start that process of searching very early, and I think we had maybe eight months or ten months of time to search. The thing that you always hope and trust that is going to happen when you’re casting, you’re waiting for the moment of, “There it is!” So that you can shut down the search for the characters, and that happened both with Jared and Kara. Jared, it was really his personality. His interview after the audition, more than even his read. He was very good in his audition, but he made me laugh and I was very charmed by him immediately. And then Kara, on the other hand, it was a scene I had seen played over and over and over in auditions, but the way she played it, it was as if she was making up the dialogue herself. With both of them it was really instantaneous.

How was it joining this ensemble, working with Wes Anderson again?
Bill Murray: I don’t really get any other work than through Wes (laughs), I just sit by the phone. But really, the making of these films has just become more of a fun adventure. I’m just delighted, I’ve known Wes for a pretty long time and I’m just so happy that he just gets better. And the people he brings in, like Tilda Swinton, she’s just a monstrous actress. It was so much fun to have her in there. And Bruce Willis, he’s a real serious-crazy movie star. Him playing the part of the town cop in a one-car town, it was fun. It really does pay off because he has that heroic, ‘Die Hard’ moment at the end of this silly little kids film. And when I saw it, it was one of the biggest laughs of any film I’ve ever been in, it really made me laugh so hard. And it really wouldn’t have worked if he hadn’t had done it. Maybe we could have got whatshisname, the Muscles from Brussels, but it wouldn’t have been the same, you know (laughs)?

How was it for you joining this world of Wes Anderson, with this particular story?
Bruce Willis: I found it really refreshing to be directed, to be asked to perform the part in a really specific way, the way that Wes saw the character. In a world where there’s a lot of films where you don’t rehearse, no one really talks to you about it. It was so nice to be asked to work in a certain way. ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is about love, it’s about new love, and young love, and love that has gotten mixed up and messed up….and is on fire, and nobody knows how to get the fire out. It’s all still the same story about how everybody needs to be loved, in some way. Even the cops (laughs).
