Keira Knightley is firmly established as one of Britain’s true global superstars, the London-born actress shot to fame thanks to her feisty, swashbuckling turn opposite Johnny Depp in the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy. A child actor, Knightley first made waves in Bend It Like Beckham which, along with a small but memorable part in Love Actually, launched her in Hollywood, and led to Pirates and the title role of bounty hunter Domino Harvey in Tony Scott’s Domino. Knightley returned home to star as Elizabeth Bennet in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice, for which she earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and since then has continued to prove her versatility and talent with acclaimed performances both on stage and in films such as Atonement, The Duchess and The Edge Of Love. In Never Let Me Go, Knightley co-stars as Ruth whose relationship with Andrew Garfield’s Tommy drives an irrevocable wedge into her lifelong friendship with Carey Mulligan’s Kathy. ‘Never Let Me Go’ hits cinemas in the UK the 11th February. The film was released on DVD in the US Febuary 1st.

What attracted you to the part of Ruth? Some might be surprised that it’s more of a supporting role.

Keira Knightley: I sort of felt a little bit trapped by the whole notion that I was only meant to do lead roles. I was reading a lot of stuff and I didn’t necessarily like the leads and I thought that the supporting roles were often very interesting, and so I thought, whose rules am I playing by here? It’s got to be the ones I make up for myself, and I’d like to play this role because I find it really interesting and I’d like to know what makes this person tick. I often have quite strong reactions to characters and morally I thought she was pretty reprehensible and I didn’t like her when I read it. And I thought that was quite interesting and I wanted to know why that person behaves the way they do and try and understand why she became the person that she did. I thought that was an interesting process and something I wanted to look into.

As a character, Ruth is not only reprehensible but incredibly manipulative.

Keira Knightley: Yeah, very. I think it’s always a terribly interesting thing when you look at a character and go, she’s manipulative, she does horrendous things, I don’t like her, I don’t think I’d like her if I met her and yet I want to understand this, because it’s important to understand how we can all make horrendous mistakes and cause incredible harm; because we all can, whether it’s intentional or not. I think one of the wonderful things about being an actress is trying to get into the head of somebody that can do that and understand exactly how that can happen, and why, and so I thought it would be an interesting journey to go on with her.

When it came to Ruth, did you ever think of playing her as anything less than human?

Keira Knightley: We all talked a lot about do you play the fact they’re clones, do you play something that’s slightly not human, do you make them more mannered? I think there is a certain mannerism anyway in saying that they’re from quite a posh boarding school. But we wanted them to be a mirror to humanity. So, through all of our discussions it became incredibly important that although they’re incredible innocent, because, obviously, they’re not allowed to have the experiences we take for granted, they are entirely human. They are institutionalised but, nevertheless, human beings.

Were you a fan of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel?

Keira Knightley: No. But so many friends of mine were huge fans of the book. Actually I’d never read any of his books. Afterwards, obviously, I read the book as soon as I said yes, and read Remains Of The Day as well, which again I’d known as a film and loved as a film, but I didn’t know his work. It’s a terrifying book, but it’s quite interesting coming to it just reading the script because I had no idea what it was when it landed on my door. It’s a very unique piece and it wasn’t terribly clear how it was going to be made into a film because it’s so quiet in its way and certainly when you read the book you think, wow this could be terrible, this could be one of those things that absolutely doesn’t work at all. But I always think those are the kind of things that it’s worth trying to do, because, potentially, they can also be the most exciting.

How would you describe the film?

Keira Knightley: I think Kazuo Ishiguro said an interesting thing to all of us, that actually it was about aging, which is very strange given it’s a group of people that all die by the time they’re 30 at the very latest. But he said it was an analogy for the life span, that they go through all the processes that we do in our lives, youth and middle age and old age, and yet it’s all condensed. And the idea of running away from death. We all face death, it’s the one certainty that everybody faces, and yet you can’t run away from it. Exploring that in the microcosm of this strange clone world, it’s like holding a mirror up to humanity in a way, yet through the eyes of people that are not seen as humans. I suppose it’s about a group of friends and the machinations of those friendships.

Talking of which, you and Carey Mulligan have been friends since you starred together in Pride & Prejudice and she’s said that closeness benefited the film. Do you agree?

Keira Knightley: I got sent [the script] about a year before we made it and at that point I was booked up to do something else which then fell through so I couldn’t do it. But nobody was attached to anything when they first sent it to me. Then the film that I was doing fell through, and I suddenly went, I don’t have a job, what’s around? And my agent said, This and they’re thinking about Carey for this role — what do you reckon? You rarely get opportunities to work with your friends and it’s amazing, it’s completely amazing, and particularly for actors because it’s a very strange thing to do with your life and it’s a very strange process, and very often on a film you don’t have rehearsals, so you’re asked to do these incredibly intimate scenes with people you absolutely don’t know. It’s wonderful that Carey and I have a six-year friendship now and we know each other very well, and we didn’t have that getting to know you ‘Are you going to fuck around? What are you going to be like? Is this a safe place that I can try and explore?’ It was instantly ‘Wicked, let’s get down to work and have coffees and talk about this’, and almost bring our friendship and our own relationship into the dynamic between these two characters. So yes, it was hugely helpful.

Alex Garland, who adapted the book, is more than the screenwriter on this project. He’s been the custodian of the novel, present every step of the way to make sure the film does the book justice.

Keira Knightley: He’s wonderful. I loved working with him. I really hope he directs; I think he would be brilliant. I’ve said that to him already. Not that he was directing this because he wasn’t but he’s a very, very special man and a very talented man and you can see that from the books he’s written and the films he’s done. He’s got very strong opinions and you can argue with him, and I always like somebody you can argue with and they don’t take offence. I think he’s wonderful and trying to make very interesting films and I have huge respect for him.

Having Alex, who is a friend of Kazuo and felt very strongly about protecting the book, that was a wonderful atmosphere and you just want to do your best work, and everyone wants to do their best work and you club together to make sure that happens for everybody, and it’s incredibly supportive. It did feel so very important and hopefully I think you can see that in the final piece, a lot of care was taken with it, a lot of thought went into it, and it did feel like everything at the time, and I hope people will get that from the world, that it was incredibly important in its quiet way.

What was the experience of working with Mark Romanek like?

Keira Knightley: He is a perfectionist and he is a visualist. I think a lot of filmmakers are. He’s wonderful. He’s terribly interesting to work with. I can never figure out how his brain works. I think, wow, what are you seeing right now? And I think the whole of the film is testament to what he saw in it. I have a huge amount of respect for him as well.

How did you find working with the actors who play your younger selves, in particular Ella Purnell who plays the young Ruth?

Keira Knightley: They were all great. [Carey and Andrew] went onto set and helped them out which I couldn’t do because I went straight off to do another film [after I finished shooting]. So I never helped Ella out with any of it, she did it entirely on her own — with Mark obviously. But it was great having them in the rehearsal rooms because you never really get an opportunity to do that and it is one person and you have to keep that kind of continuity going. It was actually incredibly helpful for us to read through the scenes, watch them do the scenes, to know where you’ve come from, and to see that relationship building between those three, so we knew what to take on. But again, I didn’t give as much help as the other two did because I was working on something else.

How did you find working with Andrew Garfield?

Keira Knightley: I’d heard of Boy A and knew he’d won the BAFTA for it. I watched it and it’s a mind-blowing piece of work and his performance in it is just sensational. So I was really excited about it, and he’s hilarious and lovely and incredibly talented and I think we all got a big kick out of working together. We had a laugh and played Scrabble together. It was a very, very happy set and they’re not always, and particularly, I think with young actors, they can get very boisterous, and it was really nice that it was a very supportive atmosphere.

To say Andrew Garfield has had a cracking year is a bit of an understatement. In addition to his emotional turn as a human clone opposite Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley in ‘Never Let Me Go’ and his role as Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook, in ‘The Social Network’ garnering him BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, Garfield will don Spider-Man’s red and blue spandex in Marc Webb’s 3D reboot of the Marvel webslinger. Check out what Garfield had to say about ‘Never Let Me Go’ below. ‘Never Let Me Go’ hits cinemas in the UK the 11th February. The film was released on DVD in the US Febuary 1st.

What was it about the role of Tommy that attracted you?

Andrew Garfield: Gosh man, it’s one of those rare ones, one of those rare stories that comes along where you go, ‘This is utterly unique, this is epic’. I hadn’t read the book but I read the script and thought, ‘This is fascinating and interesting and odd and deeply, deeply human and sad’. And then I read the book and it just filled all the space in my imagination in. You go, ‘This is life and death, this is an epic story of life and death and how short our time is, everything we experience in our own life’. These kids aren’t any different, it’s just a much more extreme situation for them. So I got excited about that and I had met Mark Romanek in Los Angeles when he started casting, just me and him and his camera and I found his energy to be really exciting and playful and open and free and that was one of the funniest auditions I’ve had in a while, and I felt immediately that I wanted to do this. It was one of those rare things where everything gets in unison and why wouldn’t I do it? It’s a no-brainer and I find it difficult to make a decision to do something unless it’s a no-brainer and this one was, F*ck yes, if they’ll have me.

How did you work out how to play Tommy who, after all, is a human clone?

Andrew Garfield: The simple fact is they have no mother, they have no father, they have no birthday, they have no identity, really. The only identity they’ve learnt is of a school environment. They haven’t been nurtured in a way that is relative to me. In my own personal life I’ve had a lovely upbringing. My family are beautiful people and they showered me with love, but I think the most important thing is that underneath all of this behaviour and the learning, is a human soul. That’s how I see it. It’s similar to someone being brought up in foster care, similar to someone who has been in an institution all his life, who has learnt behaviour to protect himself or herself more. So there’s a great physical landscape to play with and the relationships are kind of slightly skewed, but underneath it all there is this very empathetic, human thing. They are humans, they’re human clones. So I’m trying to approach it with an open heart, I guess, trying to make it as personal to myself as possible. As soon as I separate myself from Tommy then it’s like I’m reaching and I’m showing something. If I just accept he’s somewhere inside of me, then I find it within, and hopefully it reads.

You mentioned open heart, but in your character’s case it’s kidney and lungs and whatever else is required as a donor…

Andrew Garfield: Precisely man, precisely. It’s a horrible story because it devalues human life. Whether they’re clones or not, they’re made up of the exact same things as you and I and even though it’s not happened, even though we haven’t started harvesting human clones for their organs, there are certain parts of our society that see certain classes as worthless. I don’t think it’s exclusive to this Never Let Me Go world, I think it’s a reflection on how we treat each other, actually.

How would you describe the world Mark Romanek’s capturing on film?

Andrew Garfield: I think it’s going to be very beautiful. Mark has a very beautiful eye. In stylistic terms it feels as if we’ve had to cobble together our own kind of existence and that should be kind of obvious and in contrast to us as a society right now. So I think it’s going to be quite epic but a subtle epicness, if you know what I mean. I think it should be very subtle because Kazuo’s books, and this book especially, it sneaks up on you and it’s quiet and it stabs you in the heart and you don’t notice until you look down and then suddenly the pain starts to flood through you. So [it’s] a subtle, epic, human tale. That’s what [Ishiguro] was trying to say, I guess, that you’re here for a short period of time, so love, love as much as you can and create as much as you can, and the rest is nonsense. That’s how I felt from reading it.

Do Tommy and Ruth have a different way of expressing their love?

Andrew Garfield: Yeah. We haven’t learnt about sex from our older brothers, we’ve learnt about sex from very technical terminology and it’s functional. We haven’t been exposed to that many pieces of cinema so we don’t know how to make love, and in terms of relating to each other, we’ve learnt from only what we’ve seen and what feels good, so it’s skewed. It’s slightly off-kilter, but still human.

Carey and Keira have been friends for a number of years. Did you know them before this?

Andrew Garfield: Not at all. I was extremely excited to meet and work with both of them. They’ve obviously been friends since Pride & Prejudice, really, really close, and you can feel a warmth between them and a real sisterly energy. I was like, That’s okay, that’s fine, I felt I’d like to be involved in that but that’s probably how Tommy feels as well. But very quickly the dynamic felt really right and warm between all three of us. I felt very invited into the fold and included and it wasn’t awkward at all, and even if I wasn’t, it would have been because Tommy’s a bit of a fucking loner, anyway. But [they’re] wonderful people, really genuine, brilliant, down to earth girls. They just want to do good work, and they really care, as I do, about using whatever they have to offer to tell a really, amazingly beautiful story.

You’ve had to go on a special diet for the completion scenes.

Andrew Garfield: Yeah. I’m really up for exploring the limits of sacrifice that I can give, just as a kind of experiment, but I’m actually struggling with not eating. I love eating I’ve discovered, like more than anything in the world. But not just eating, like eating chocolate and sauces and burgers and deep fried sh*t. I shaved my head to look sad and like a shell. But it’s really tough. I need to get more disciplined with not eating.

Like Carey, you spent time on set whilst the younger actors were filming as well as during rehearsals. Why was it important for you to do that?

Andrew Garfield: Alex [Garland] put it beautifully: to draw an inner piece of string between me and my younger self, Charlie [Rowe], who’s a really good actor. Actually he’s brilliant, if there’s anyone in danger of being upstaged by their younger self, it’s me, because he’s extremely good. So just holding on to that contact, and holding on to little mannerisms and little physical tics, so there is a link through. It felt important, and from a very selfish perspective it’s always very sad when you have to leave a story behind and leave playing these people behind and there was a way of extending that. I was also just really excited to watch and be involved in any way I could be involved in young Tommy’s life. I think the actors playing the younger versions of the characters appreciated it as well.

When you make a film, the idea is to create community and for there to be a constant flow of ideas and information and creative collaboration and encouragement and to make it more of a family than not, and that element was important to keep everyone warm and cohesive with each other, to make sure we were telling the same story, it always came back to the story, this is such an incredible story and everyone felt the same way about it. It was a story that we were all very honoured to be a part of making, and to make sure there was that line connecting the young Kathy, Ruth and Tommy and the old Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. I felt very privileged to be able to watch Mark shoot it and watch him work with the kids and to be allowed to offer a little piece of advice if and when that was appropriate.

You mention it was all about the story and there seems to be a real sense of everyone involved in the film doing their best to respect and protect the source material.

Andrew Garfield: It’s this incredible metaphor for all our lives and this massive existential question mark — what do you do with the time you have? — and when a script like that comes along you do everything in your power to be a part of that story and if you are lucky enough to be a part of it, you relish every second. And you cherish every second. It’s difficult to find purpose as an actor because there are very few things that are actually of genuine importance that get made in film, and when one of those stories comes along that connects, it becomes pure joy every day.

At the 54th BFI London Film Festival I caught up with Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield for their upcoming film Never Let Me Go, the much anticipated movie based on Kauzo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel of the same name. I had the good fortune of attending the press screening this morning and I have to say it’s one of the most tender, brooding and all around fantastic movies of the year! Check out what they had to say below.

How much of a responsibility did you feel towards the book?

Andrew Garfield: I think it’s very rare that you find a script that is so full of what it is to be alive, to be human and the struggles that we collectively go through, it has massive existential question marks. As actors you search for that meaningful material and when it comes along you feel it instantly. There are terrible scripts, there are good scripts and then there are scripts like this one. I think none of us hesitated in being a part of this beautiful story.

Carey Mulligan: I read the book when it came out and loved it, I always loved it first and foremost because it’s a love story and it’s about…um…you can want very simple things from life but not get them. Keira and I had done Pride & Prejudice together, we’ve done adaptations of Dickens and Austin and other things by authors who are not around to tell you off if you’ve got it wrong (laughs), so this was a lot more intimidating because we had Kazuo Ishiguro with us, and we wanted to do everything he imagined when he wrote it – and also for the people who have read the book and fell in love with it, so there was more pressure.

From reading the book and knowing who else was going to be in the film I always felt we were all on the same page and that we were going to make the same film. We were all so in love with it, we were big fans of the book and found out so much more about the book by doing it.

With director Mark Romanek and screenwriter Alex Garland doing such a fantastic job capturing the book, was everything you needed to portray the characters in the script? Or did you find yourself referring back to the book?

Carey Mulligan: We were with the book the whole time, the script was perfect, I don’t think a line was changed from when I first read it Febuary of last year to when we shot. We also had a great environment to work in with Mark. Mark had a copy of the book with him all the time, I had a copy of the book with me, we all had the book with us the whole time, we always would refer to that. We had a brilliant script but especially for me the whole book is narrated by my character, so I felt like I had to refer to it. Also it’s great to go back to it for ideas, you can play a scene a certain way, then you can find one line that could inspire you to do something different.

Andrew Garfield: Yeah I think across the board everyone was deeply reverent to the source material, whether he likes it or not (laughs), I think he gets a little sick by how reverent we were, we still bow when he enters the room and make him very uncomfortable (laughs), it’s fun to watch. I think collectively we all had the same intention, that intention sprang from Kasou’s story

Seeing as you’ve both starred in Blockbusters and the more critically acclaimed films, do you have different approaches to them at all?

Andrew Garfield: No not for me, I’m pretty sure I can say we all approach every job as if it were our last and our first. You don’t look at it from a perspective of a big film, or a small film, you don’t think I have to be REALLY good in this. I think you just have to work hard at what you care about. Carey and Keira I respect greatly because they do projects that means something to them, I’m speaking for them right now though (laughs), but I’m sure they don’t discriminate in terms of size or any of that kind of thing, it’s not an issue.
Carey Mulligan: That was very well said (laughs).

How much of a challenge was it to be a part of a project that is so full of emotion?

Andrew Garfield: I find it easier to cry than to make people laugh (laughs).

Carey Mulligan: It is, it’s always harder to maintain raw enthusiasm or joy than to go into a really dark place. I think for us with this it was trying not to cry, I cry all the time, it’s my modus operandi (laughs). We all wanted to mark each other and say don’t drop a tear, we were all watching each other. With our characters we didn’t want to portray tragedy, we just wanted to live in the circumstances we were in and the circumstances we had.

Those exclamation point lovers over at Yahoo! Movies! have let loose on a new clip from Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go. The film is based on Kauzo Ishiguro’s highly acclaimed novel of the same name. In the clip Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Ruth (Keira Knightley) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield) learn about ‘deferrals’. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from this film, it looks like a haunting, heartbreaking and visually stunning flick. Just to note the clip gives away a key plot point, if you want to see the movie fresh I would give this clip a miss.

Never Let Me Go is a poignant love story, adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling, Booker Prize short listed novel of the same name. As children, Ruth (Keira Knightley), Kathy (Carey Mulligan) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield), spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them. Never Let Me Go comes to theaters October 1st, 2010 and stars Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Sally Hawkins, Andrew Garfield, Charlotte Rampling, Domhnall Gleeson, Charlie Rowe, Andrea Riseborough. The film is directed by Mark Romanek.

Three striking character posters have been released by Fox Searchlight for Mark Romanek’s highly anticipated film Never Let Me Go. I’ve been looking forward to this film for a good moment or two now, it looks fascinating. Every piece of marketing is just building up even more excitement for me. The movie is based on Kauzo Ishiguro’s much acclaimed novel of the same name – as you can see written confidently on the posters ‘Based on: The best novel of the decade – Time’. They’re some bold word, I hope this lives up to the hype, it looks like it could be one of the most tender, brooding and all around fantastic movies of the year.

The 54th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express, have just announced that this year’s Festival will open on Wednesday 13 October with the European premiere of NEVER LET ME GO, directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo), the film is based on Kauzo Ishiguro’s much acclaimed novel of the same name and is Romanek’s first film since 2002’s One Hour Photo – he was set to direct The Wolfman but left due to creative differences. I think this is a great film to open the festival with, from the trailer this film looks, tender, brooding and all around fantastic, a terrific way to kick off what I’m sure will be a terrific festival. The stars of the film are expected to attend the opening night screening, including Oscar® nominee Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), BAFTA winner and Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education) and BAFTA TV award winner Andrew Garfield (Boy A, Red Riding).

Sandra Hebron, the Festival’s Artistic Director comments: “’It is a great pleasure to be able to open the festival with a film as accomplished and imaginative as NEVER LET ME GO. It combines impeccable film making, outstanding performances and a deeply moving story, and I couldn’t wish for a stronger or more appropriate opening night.”

Director Mark Romanek adds: “I think I can speak for the entire cast and crew when I say that we are deeply honored and excited to have been selected to open this year’s festival. For me personally, it seems the perfect way to celebrate the conclusion of an incredible filmmaking experience in the UK.”

The full programme for The 54th BFI London Film Festival will be announced at the Press Launch on Wednesday 8 September. I’ll be in attendance throughout the festival, expect to see a gazillion interviews, reviews and random bits and bobs throughout October!

I’m a big fan of both Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield (the new Spiderman), Keira Knightley is meh-ness/10 for me, I’ve never been the biggest fan. All in all this looks fantastic.
