Details Emerge On Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake – Set To Start Shooting In March
Nov 28th

ShockTillYouDrop recently spoke to producer Roy Lee about Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook Park’s classic South Korean film ‘Oldboy.’ ‘Oldboy’ tells the story of a Joe (Dae-su Oh in the original), a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughters birthday. For fifteen years he is held captive, and upon his release must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, won the much coveted Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
“We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of the original movie–will be very happy with. Some may consider it a bit darker.” He added that “there’s going to be a different interpretation of the hallway scene that is hopefully going to be Spike’s signature moment in the movie that he wants to show in a way that has never been seen in an action movie.”
Josh Brolin has been cast as Joe, while Colin Firth and Christian Bale have been linked to the part of the lead villain. I’m a big fan of both Josh Brolin and Spike Lee, I still don’t quite grasp remaking such a unique and flawless film though if I’m honest. I am however giving this film the benefit of the doubt as Spike Lee is such a talented and original film-maker himself, without doubt one of my favourite directors working today. The combination of Spike Lee and Josh Brolin is certainly a FAR better fit to the material than Will Smith and Steven Spielberg – who had previously been linked to the project. If either Colin Firth or Christian Bale sign on, this film certainly becomes more and more alluring.
Joel Edgerton In Talks To Star In ’300: Battle of Artemisia’
Nov 2nd
Vulture bring word that Joel Edgerton is in talks to star in the upcoming prequel to Zach Snyder’s ’300,’ ’300: Battle of Artemisia.’ Edgerton is reportedly in line to play Themosticles, the famed archon and general who led the Greeks to victory against the invading Persians in 480 BCE. The Australian actors stock has been steadily rising over the last year after gaining international success with ‘Animal Kingdom,’ then subsequently starring in ‘Warrior and ‘The Thing.’ In 2012 he’ll be seen in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby,’ Disney’s ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green,’ ‘Wish You Were Here,’ and possibly Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Kill Bin Laden.’
’300: Battle of Artemisia’ is based on Frank Miller’s upcoming graphic novel that takes Xerxes, the Persian leader who is an antagonist in ’300,’ and turns him into more of a pivotal figure. He’s a man in search of godhood after the death of his father, battling an Athenian warlord named Themistocles. The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the battle of Artemisium, which occured in 480 BC. Previous reports had Snyder – who in my eyes done a fantastic job with ’300′ – pegged to direct until Warner Bros and producer Christopher Nolan signed him up to helm ‘Superman: Man of Steel.’ Noam Murro (five-time DGA nominated commercials director) is on board to direct the film. Look out for ’300: Battle of Artemisia’ sometime in 2013.
Producers Mark Canton & Gianni Nunnari Talk ’300: Battle of Artemisia’
Oct 31st
On the promotional campaign for ‘Immortals,’ producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari shared some details with Comingsoon on the upcoming sequel/prequel to Zach Snyder’s ’300,’ ’300: Battle of Artemisia.’ The film is based on Frank Miller’s upcoming graphic novel that takes Xerxes, the Persian leader who is an antagonist in ’300,’ and turns him into more of a pivotal figure. He’s a man in search of godhood after the death of his father, battling an Athenian warlord named Themistocles. The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the battle of Artemisium, which occured in 480 BC.
On The Current State Of The Project: “We have to say that Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, his writing partner, have killed it, they’ve done a tremendous job making a highly intelligent, epic story that will stand on its own. But it’s not a conventional sequel and, for what we do, that’s what you hope and pray for. That you can be original and authentic at the same time.” “It’s a work in progress… as opposed to a year ago where it was just something we wanted to do.”
On A Possible Gerald Butler’s Cameo: “It’s too early to say,” he smiled, “but we know the answer.”
