Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’ Moved Forward To July 6th – Starring Benicio Del Toro, Blake Lively & John Travolta
Jan 31st
Universal Pictures has moved the release date of Oliver Stone’s upcoming crime thiller ‘Savages’ from September 28th into the heart of the summer on July 6th – pegging against ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ With this date change I’d expect a trailer shortly. The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel, ‘Savages: A Novel,’ which was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010. ‘Savages’ features an all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir.
Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Tylor Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry—raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Blake Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them.
When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Salma Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon—with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (John Travolta)—wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.

John Travolta, Uma Thurman & Blake Lively To Join Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’
Apr 22nd
Deadline are reporting that Oliver Stone is bulking up the cast of his upcoming crime thriller ‘Savages’, by arranging a Pulp Fiction and Be Cool reunion of John Travolta and Uma Thurman, as the two actors are in talks to join the ensemble cast. Apparently also joining is Blake Lively (The Town), to play the role of O. Travolta will play Dennis, a burned out DEA agent, and Thurman will play O’s mom, Paqu. Jennifer Lawrence, the Oscar-nominated ‘Winter’s Bone’ was reportedly linked to the role of O but dropped out due to her joining ‘The Hunger Games.’
Travolta, Thurman and Lively join Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch. Del Toro is set to play a deadly drug cartel enforcer named Lado. Salma Hayek, will play the role of Mexican cartel queen-pin Elena. Johnson and Kitsch will play Ben and Chon, two best friends who are growers of marijuana in Laguna. They share an unusual love triangle relationship with O. Their quiet lucrative life is interrupted by a visit from the drug enforcer Lado who tells them they will have to work for his boss, a Mexican cartel matriarch. When they resist, O gets kidnapped and the ransom is every ill-gotten cent they’ve made. ‘Savages’ is an adaptation of Don Winslow’s bestselling novel ‘Savages: A Novel’. Look out for more casting news soon as production is set to start on ‘Savages’ in the summer. This has the potential to be a gem! UPDATE – Variety are reporting that Emile Hirsch (Into The Wild) is also joining the cast.
Benicio Del Toro Signing On For Oliver Stone’s Crime Thriller ‘Savages’
Mar 23rd
Deadline have made known that Benicio Del Toro is signing on to play a deadly drug cartel enforcer named Lado in Oliver Stone’s upcoming crime thriller ‘Savages.’ For the past few weeks Del Toro had been link to role. Del Toro is one of my favourite actors working today, his involvement in a film automatically boosts my interest levels in it by roughly 74.438438677% (roughly). The fact that the film is based on highly acclaimed novel (‘Savages: A Novel’) gives me even more hope for this being top-notch.
If Dealine’s sources are on the button Aaron Johnson and Taloy Kitsch look set to be joining Del Toro as Ben and Chon, two best friends who are growers of marijuana in Laguna. They share an unusual love triangle relationship with a trippy girl named O. Their quiet lucrative life is interrupted by a visit from the drug enforcer Lado (Del Toro) who tells them they will have to work for his boss, a Mexican cartel matriarch. When they resist, O gets kidnapped and the ransom is every ill-gotten cent they’ve made.
Furthermore Salma Hayek is being tapped to play the cartel matriarch, an iron-fisted beauty who becomes intrigued and practically maternal over the kidnapped gal. Production is set to start on ‘Savages’ this summer.
Olivia Wilde, Salma Hayek & Taylor Kitsch Linked To Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages
Mar 19th
Those consistent scoopmeisters over at Deadline report that Jennifer Lawrence, the Oscar-nominated ‘Winter’s Bone’ actress has dropped out of Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages,’ the upcoming adaptation of Don Winslow’s bestselling novel ‘Savages: A Novel,’ due to her joining ‘The Hunger Games.’
‘Savages’ revolves around a love triangle between two best friend pot growers and O (the part Lawrence was linked with), the wild child girlfriend they share. Previous reports were that Stone had been meeting with a number of top-notch actors to play Ben and Chon (the two best friends), a list that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Aaron Johnson, Tom Hardy, James Franco and Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund. Now it looks like Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass) are the favourites to play Ben and Chon, while Olivia Wilde (Tron:Legacy) is being tossed into the mix as a possible replacement for Lawrence.
Another actress linked to the film is Salma Hayek, who’s being tapped to play the cartel matriarch, an iron-fisted beauty who becomes intrigued and practically maternal over the kidnapped gal. Benicio Del Toro has been long linked to the role of an Mexican drug cartel enforcer sent to muscle Ben and Chon out of business. When they resist, O gets kidnapped and the ransom is every ill-gotten cent they’ve made.
I’ve got high hopes for this flick, I’ve got a soft spot for crime thrillers. Expect some confirmed casting news soonish as production is set to start in the summer.
