Writer-Director Rian Johnson Talks ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Creative Freedom & More: “It’s Just Joyous”
On a rather fantastic TalkHouse podcast episode featuring Rian Johnson and Terry Gilliam for the US theatrical release of Gilliam’s latest movie, ‘The Zero Theorem,’ Johnson opened up briefly about his work as writer-director on ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ (he’s also rumored to be writing and perhaps helming ‘Star Wars Episode IX’). Asked how it feels to “take over someone else’s world”, the ‘Looper’ writer-director replied, “I’m just starting into it, but so far it’s been nothing but…honestly, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing. It’s just joyous.” Johnson also talked about not only growing up with the movies, but playing with Star Wars toys as a child. “The first movies I was making in my head were part of this world, so part of it is a direct connection —it’s almost like an automatic jacking-in into childhood in a weird way.”
First Poster & Trailer For J.C. Chandor’s ‘A Most Violent Year’ – Starring Oscar Isaac & Jessica Chastain
This first trailer and poster has arrived online for ‘A Most Violent Year,’ the upcoming thriller written and directed by ‘All Is Lost’ and ‘Margin Call’ helmer J.C. Chandor. ‘A Most Violent Year’ is set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city’s history. The story revolves around an American immigrant (Oscar Isaac) and his wife (Jessica Chastain) trying to expand their business as violence and corruption threaten to destroy all they have built. A24 Films is releasing the film on December 31st, positioning it for a potential awards run. Davud Oyelowo, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Albert Brooks also star.
With filming on ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ still underway in the UK, Matthew Myatt, who works at Airbourne Aviation flying club as a simulations engineer, has snapped the following image showcasing what looks to be like life-size models of a partly-built Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s beloved spaceship, and a tarp-covered X-Wing fighter. Myatt originally thought his picture of the Millennium Falcon and an X-Wing fighter were experimental aircraft at Greenham Common, Berkshire (the location of a former RAF airbase). He told the BBC, “It wasn’t too clear until I viewed the picture and then realised what it was. I grew up with Star Wars so I started jumping around.”
According to a new report, Miltos Yerolemou, perhaps best known for his role as Syrio Forel in ‘Game of Thrones,’ has joined the cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII.’ Syrio Forel is a master sword-fighter and instructor hired by Eddard Stark to train Arya Stark in the series, and Yerolemou has played several other parts which involve sword fighting during his career. With that in mind, I think it’s safe to assume he may get up to some lightsabre-related shenanigans in the film. He joins his fellow ‘Game of Thrones’ alumni Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) in the latest ‘Star Wars’ film.
