Oct 24th
With the December issue of Empire Magazine arriving in news stands tomorrow, October 25th (as well as the iTunes store in the UK and US), the good people over at Empire have unveiled these six stunning 3D lenticular covers to celebrate Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.’ The covers feature Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins, Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, Ian McKellen’s Gandalf the Grey, Andy Serkis’ Gollum, and Richard Armitage’s Thorin Oakenshield - the leader of the dwarf band setting out on an adventure to reclaim their lost lands from the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Empire Mag subscribers will get their own exclusive cover (the gold Bilbo Cover), along with one of the lenticular covers separately from the magazine.
In related ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ news, Empire also revealed a snippet of their interview with director Peter Jackson from the cover story. Jackson spoke on the first installment in his ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy being his shortest trip to Middle-earth, “It’s looking like it’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was,” explains Jackson.“So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet. I mean, Fellowship was just under three hours and this is about 2 hours 40 minutes at the moment.” The “at the moment” refers to the fact that the credits hadn’t yet been added and not all effects shots finalised when we spoke to Jackson, but it’s going to be close.

Ian McKellen Talks On Returning To Play Gandalf In Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ Movies
Oct 17th
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ian McKellen revealed that he almost didn’t sign up for Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ films, “It was a little like going back to something that wasn’t necessarily going to be particularly challenging. Gandalf is still inside me, as it were, so the business of getting to know a new character — I was sort of going to be robbed of that.” McKellen explained that he didn’t want to let the fans of the series own, even considering the years-long commitment during which the actor would be working in New Zealand a lot, far from his home in England. A friend asked McKellen how he could explain himself to fans if he quit the project. “You felt, how many millions of people are waiting for it?” he says. “They wouldn’t understand if you weren’t as keen as they were.” The actor also commented on how he’s happy that he doesn’t have to be the very serious Gandalf the White in ‘The Hobbit’ films. “Peter Jackson and I much prefer Gandalf the Grey, who was a man who did manage to enjoy himself.”
