Chris Evans Speaks On ‘The Avengers’ Deleted Scenes & ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’
Sep 15th
While out and about on the promotional campaign for ‘The Iceman,’ HitFix spoke to Chris Evans about ‘The Avengers’ deleted scenes, the success of ‘The Avengers’ – which Evans says he “thought “The Avengers” would do well, but admits, “third biggest of all time? You never think that much” - and his training schedule for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ Evans was said to be happy to discover that there was an extended series of scenes focusing on Steve Rogers/Captain America’s difficulty living in 2012 America included on ‘The Avengers’ DVD and Blu-ray. Director Joss Whedon cut the scenes from the theatrical release and Evans says he didn’t protest, “It was a good piece of the movie, but I think it didn’t make it because that’s for ‘Captain America 2′. I think when you cut the whole movie together I think Joss said, ‘That’s a different story. That’s Cap’s story.’ So, I guess it’s nice that it came out that it shows a little bit richer character for Cap, but by the same token a lot of that stuff that’s for another movie. So, hopefully we can kind of still tell that story in a different way for ‘Cap 2.’”
With ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ set to start production in less than six months, Chris Evans shed some light into getting into shape for reprising his dual role of Steve Rogers/Captain America, “I think the next Captain America is in March,. “I probably won’t do anything in-between. I’d probably like a little bit of down time. I have to get into shape for that and I like to take a couple of months to train. “I’ve lost it all right now. It’s gonna be at least two months of training. I am not looking forward to it. I mean, I like going to the gym, but these are not gym sessions buddy. You don’t even know dude. I’m puking at these gym sessions. It’s two hours every day and it’s brutal man. I don’t do a lot of cardio because I’m not trying to lose weight, but gain weight. But, it’s big weights and you’re just so long. You’ll be working out and you’ll be, ‘How long have I been here? Only 35 min? I still have another hour here.’ And you just leave the gym unable to move. You just know you have to do it tomorrow. It’s a chore.”
‘The Avengers’ Writer/Director Joss Whedon Talks About His Creative Control At Marvel
Sep 13th
With Marvel recently signing a deal with Joss Whedon to return for ‘The Avengers 2′ as well as both help develop a live-action ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ series for Marvel Television at ABC, and contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe, The Huffington Post spoke to the filmmaker while he was out and about promoting his (sort of) modern-day Shakespeare adaptation ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’ In the interview, Whedon was asked about his “power” over at Marvel considering this new deal, “I have some power, you know? I think there’s a level of trust. You know, Kevin Feige and I have always had mutual respect, and on the first movie he was very supportive. But there were definitely things where they were like, “Hmm, we don’t see that.” And I think now Kevin’s in a place where it would be more like, “We don’t see it, but we think you do.”
Considering the humongous success of his ‘The Avengers’ movie, Joss Whedon answered the question, “Like, “We can’t argue with the way the last one did”?” With, “Yeah. And that doesn’t mean they’re just going to roll over and I’m going to say, “Oh, it’s ‘Great Lakes Avengers’ and we’re going to get Squirrel Girl and you’re gonna love it.” You know, they need to believe. But all I want to do is make the movie that they want. And so it’s been great. We’re having that same kind of, “What if? Oh, and what if?” And “I was thinking it would be funny … ooh ooh ooh.” There’s definitely a level of earned trust, but as with any good studio head or producer, that doesn’t mean a free pass.”
Tom Hiddleston Interview For ‘The Avengers’ Blu-Ray & DVD Release
Sep 12th
Iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow answer the call to action when Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., initiates a daring, globe-spanning recruitment effort to assemble The Avengers team to defeat an unexpected enemy threatening global safety and security. Despite pulling together the ultimate dream team, Nick Fury and longtime confidant Agent Coulson must find a way to convince the Super Heroes to work with, not against each other, when the powerful and dangerous Loki gains access to the Cosmic Cube and its unlimited power.
Directed by Joss Whedon, ‘The Avengers’ (‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK) stars Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye/Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg and Stellen Skarsgard co-star. Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. ’The Avengers’ is available as a 2D Blu-ray Combo Pack, a 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and on DVD from September 17th in the UK and September 25th in the US. My previous interviews for ‘The Avengers’ can be found here: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Joss Whedon. A Blu-ray and DVD interview with Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans can be read here (more to come).
Did you have a favourite scene to shoot on ‘The Avengers’? A memorable scene for me watching the film is when Loki and the Hulk “meet”….
Tom Hiddleston: I don’t know if this will be in any kind of blooper reel or anything, but I loved shooting that scene where Loki gets basically Hulk smashed (laughs) – because I was doing it myself, as Hulk is a CGI creation. So I was shouting at thin air, and I was jumping around fighting thin air, and then the Hulk picks me up by the leg and smashes me around. I had a wire tied around to my ankle and then at just the right moment they yanked the wire and I went flying out of shot. And then Industrial Light & Magic, who were the visual effects house on ‘The Avengers,’ they needed references for where Loki lands each time he gets Hulk smashed. And the art director had created these trenches in the set, which I had to jump into (laughs). It looked so ridiculous that Joss Whedon couldn’t keep a straight face and indeed couldn’t bottle his laughter. So he was cracking up, which in turn made me laugh, and the First Assistant Director ended up telling us both of, like, “Guys, we have to get this scene done by the end of the day, we have to go home,” (laughs). So I hope that that’s in there somewhere.
Joss Whedon Speaks On ‘The Avengers’ Sequel & Marvel’s “Phase 2″
Sep 11th
Seeing as there’s been a deluge of major developments from Marvel recently and this month sees the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘The Avengers,’ expect a tonne of ‘The Avengers,’ ‘The Avenger 2,’ and Marvel related quotes from director Joss Whedon in the coming weeks. While promoting his (sort of) modern-day Shakespeare adaptation ‘Much Ado About Nothing,’ Whedon spoke to 24 Hours on his role as a an ‘overseer’ for Marvel’s “Phase 2″, “Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say” – here, Whedon affects a pompous British accent – “‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”
Widely praised by fans and critics alike, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is currently sitting comfortably at the third spot on the all-time world box office list with a hefty haul of $1,507.4 billion, trailing only James Cameron’s ’Titanic’ ($2.185 billion) and ‘Avatar’ ($2.782 billion). Marvel recently signed a deal for Whedon to return for ‘The Avengers 2′ as well as help develop a live-action ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ series for Marvel Television at ABC. The filmmaker will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. The tentatively-titled ‘The Avengers 2′ will follow ’Iron Man 3,’ ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and presumably hopefully Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man.’ Marvel Studios has set a May 1st, 2015 release date for ‘The Avengers 2.’

How did you find it shooting that fight scene in the woods between both your characters Thor and Captain America, alongside Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man? That was one of the first scenes you shot on ‘The Avengers’ in costume, right?
Chris Evans: That was a big one for me, that was the first time I saw Chris Hemsworth in his Thor cape, the first time I saw Robert Downey Jr in the Iron Man suit – and I had literally just seen ‘Thor’ a couple of days prior. So it was exciting. It was a night time shoot, we were in the woods and….I don’t know, there was something about being outside at night, in the cold, it felt like a real fight scene was about to happen. Seeing these guys all suited up, I felt like a little kid.
Samuel L Jackson Speaks On ‘The Avengers’, Nick Fury & Joss Whedon
Sep 7th
With the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘The Avengers’ fast approaching and following last weekends news that Marvel’s superhero blockbuster reached the immense figure of $1.5 billion worldwide, Samuel L. Jackson caught up with The Age to speak on working with director Joss Whedon, researching Nick Fury, ‘The Avengers’ cast, donning Nick Fury’s costume and makeup, and more. Talking about his experience on the ‘The Avengers’ with Whedon, Jackson shared, “Joss Whedon is very good at what he does. He’s incredibly smart, and he’s a great director and writer. The script was constantly evolving. We would get eight or nine pages, and two days later he would say, “I was thinking about that… Now it should be this.” Once you look at it all on screen, it all comes together – and it’s very nice.” Continuing why he thought Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ script worked so well, the actor said, “Joss knows more about the comic book genre than most people, especially within this particular franchise. He has an understanding of the relationships of the characters and he understands the Marvel world. He put the story and the characters together in a very unique and wonderful way.”
Touching on his research for Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson shared the following, “I’ve been reading the Fury comics since I was a kid. I remember when it was Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos in the War World II war comic books. That’s when I was introduced to him, and then I moved on. Then all of a sudden, I pick up an Avengers comic book and I was like, “Hey, that’s me!” It’s amazing. It’s great.” The actor also talked about the hair, makeup and costume for Nick Fury, shedding some light on a change to the characters appearance, “At a certain point in the production, it only took the makeup team 20 minutes to put on the eye patch and scars. However, the first time it took about an hour-and-a-half because we had to go back and forth to Joss. We’d have to ask things like, “Is this too much? Is this not enough?” We actually changed the scar to the comic book scar for this movie, which is something that a few people have noticed. If you look at the Iron Man and Thor movies, the scar looks like two little cat scratches.”
