Rhys Ifans Interview For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’
Jun 21st
One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. ’The Amazing Spider-Man’ is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ will be swinging onto the big screen July 3rd in the US and July 4th in the UK.
To start with, Dr. Curt Connors’ research is potentially a force for good. But then as the story moves along, there’s a lot of similiraties between what he goes through as The Lizard and hard drug addiction….?
Rhys Ifans: Yeah. Dr. Curt Connors and Richard Parker, they lead the early advancements in cross-species genetics. Peter Parker’s father was working with arachnids, spiders. And I was working with reptiles. Given the fact that I’m limbless and reptiles have the ability to re-grow a limb, that is potentially a force for good – given the amount of military and landmine victims, civilians, all over the world. It could be a good thing. The drug addiction, that was something in my mind. It was very clear, you know? He injects himself and develops the strength of ten men, he thinks he’s godlike. What he doesn’t reckon with is of course the advancement with science will re-grow his arm. But also he acquires reptilian, cold blooded traits.

What was it that drew you to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’?
Denis Leary: I actually spoke to Marc Webb on the phone, and I’m not a Spider-Man guy, I’m more of a Batman guy. And I saw Marc’s first movie and I thought, “This is interesting, why is this guy making this giant blockbuster?” The way Marc talked about the script was as if he was making a tiny little character-driven piece. I thought that was interesting, and I’d liked Andrew Garfield after seeing him in ‘The Social Network’ and a couple other movies. And Rhys Ifans, I can’t remember if he was in but they were talking about him at least already. So I thought, “This is going to be interesting, this might be fun.” I just kind of jumped in and I’m telling you, Marc stuck to his guns. We were improvising and talking in detail about every single scene, and even for some of the big action sequences Marc talked about the character and character arcs – which they never do in action movies. So it was a really interesting approach, you know? A lot of improvisation, which was great. I had a really great experience with ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’

Playing such a well loved and revered character brings its own challenges, but then you’ve got the added physicality of the role as well. What was it about playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man that you found most challenging in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’?
Andrew Garfield: The physicality was fun because I just felt so safe with that aspect of making ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ I felt so safe with that aspect of the movie-making process because of Vic Armstrong and because of that stunt team, they were so encouraging and inclusive and they didn’t treat me in any different way than each other. That’s what I loved, when you just feel apart of a community and part of a tribe that is all going for the same goal. That’s what I felt with those guys. So on ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ that wasn’t the hardest thing, the physicality wasn’t the hardest thing. I think the hardest thing for me was when it came to the story, you know? When it came to the story of Peter Parker and wanting to do that justice. To make sure that all of the themes and the characteristics of the guy, and the struggles that he goes through were portrayed in a way that were honoured and powerful. Also, injecting it with lightness as well, that was another thing that I really cared about with Peter Parker/Spider-Man, the humour – all the things that are there with Peter Parker, I wanted to achieve that. That was the biggest challenge.
Martin Sheen Interview For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Speaking to you previously about the film, you commented on how you hadn’t watched the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. What prior knowledge did you have of the Spider-Man world? How was it playing Uncle Ben without any preconceived notions?
Martin Sheen: Yeah, I had never seen them. I keep telling people, in an apologetic way (laughs), but for good or ill, I’d never seen one of the previous Spider-Man movies. I had seen a part of one with Tobey Maguire, whom I love, on an aeroplane once without earphones, a guy next to me was watching it. I was like, “So that’s what people are all excited about.” So I didn’t have any preconceived notion, or any idea of what to expect. I came on the set and just worked with these extraordinary people, like Campbell Scott, he and I play brothers, he’s the father of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in the movie. And then Sally Field, who’s Aunt May, we had these relationships going and that’s what Marc Webb encouraged us to develop. Because without that foundation there would be nowhere, emotionally, for the show to go. Uncle Ben and Peter Parker, it’s not unlike any other parent/child relationship in the teenage years. It gets very awkward for young people and I’m familiar with that. Not only as a father, but as a grandfather (laughs). And Spider-Man as a character, I was already 21 when he first appeared. I remember it on television as a cartoon series. The kids used to run to the TV because they loved it, my kids. The “Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can” song (laughs). I always remember that.
