‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Passes $100 Million In IMAX – Second Film To Do So
Sep 4th
Closely following the news that the exhilarating finale to Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga has reached the $1 billion milestone, IMAX and Warner Bros have just announced that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. As of September 3rd, the third and final Dark Knight film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens in the US and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. These figures include box office receipts from China, which began playing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on August 27th in 75 IMAX theatres. ”The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience” is still playing in IMAX theatres worldwide. For full theatre locations and showtimes head on over to IMAX.com/Theatres. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ represents the second IMAX DMR® film to cross this $100 million milestone, after James Cameron’s ‘Avatar.’
For the previous film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, ’The Dark Knight,’ Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on “The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience” – including the film’s gripping prologue – incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers. ’The Dark Knight Rises’ sees Christian Bale returning to the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman alongside series regulars Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Alfred (Michael Caine). Newcomers to Nolan’s Batman saga include Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, Marion Cotillard’s Miranda Tate, Matthew Modine’s Foley, Ben Mendelsohn’s Daggett, and Tom Hardy’s dastardly, physically imposing and oddly charismatic villain, Bane.

The Hollywood Reporter bring word that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has this weekend crossed the colossal $1 billion plateau, becoming only the 13th film in history to hit that milestone. The two previous Dark Knight instalments, ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ ended their theatrical runs at $372,710,015 and $1,003,045,358 global totals, respectively. Internationally, the exhilarating conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga has earned $574 million – well ahead of the $469.7 million haul of the trilogies previous installment, ’The Dark Knight.’ To date, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has accumulated $431.2 million at the US box office, making it the 9th highest grossing movie of all time in the US, just behind the $435,11 million haul of Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.’ ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is now sitting at a total of $1.005 billion through Sunday.

The story for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is set eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes in ‘The Dark Knight.’ It sees the Caped Crusader resurface to protect a city that brands him an enemy as a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest.
Judging by films stunning trailers, its marketing campaign, the first-rate cast, and most importantly; the two previous installments in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight saga, ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ I always expected something rather special from ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Thankfully, for me, it delivered – big time! Based upon the iconic characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics, ’The Dark Knight Rises’ stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate. Matthew Modine, Daniel Sunjata, Christopher Judge, Ben Mendelsohn, Juno Temple, Aidan Gillen, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Nestor Carbonell, Tom Conti, Joey King, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis, Josh Stewart, Christopher Judge, Adam Rodriguez and Rob Brown co-star. Alongside Tom Hardy’s dastardly, physically imposing and oddly charismatic performance as Bane, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s altruistic and admirable young cop John Blake, Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman was undoubtedly one of my favourite additions to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Selina Kyle brought mischief, humour and humanity to the film in abundance as this mysterious cat burglar desperate for a fresh start. ’The Dark Knight Rises’ is currently sitting at a worldwide cumulative of $959,84 million, well on its way to hit that colossal $1 billion plateau. The two previous Dark Knight instalments, ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ ended their theatrical runs at $372,710,015 and $1,001,921,825 global totals, respectively. Internationally, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has earned $535,20 million – well ahead of the $469.7 million haul of the trilogies previous installment, ’The Dark Knight.’ To date, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has accumulated $424,64 million at the US box office, making it the 9th highest grossing movie of all time in the US, just behind the $435,11 million haul of Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.’

Once the credits started to roll after the final scene in ‘The Dark Knight’ – the visually stunning montage scene featuring Gordon’s epic “he’s the hero Gotham deserves” monologue, capped off with that last beautiful shot of Christian Bale’s Batman on his Bat-pod going off in the distance – a third instalment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman series had been sitting gloriously and comfortably at the top of my “most anticipated film” list.
