Ryan Gosling Interview For ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’
Mar 27th
‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ is a sweeping drama that powerfully explores the unbreakable bond between fathers and sons. Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a high-wire motorcycle stunt performer who travels with the carnival from town to town. While passing through Schenectady in upstate New York, he tries to reconnect with a former lover, Romina (Eva Mendes), only to learn that she has given birth to their son Jason in his absence. Luke decides to give up life on the road to try and provide for his newfound family by taking a job as a car mechanic. Noticing Luke’s ambition and talents, his employer Robin (Ben Mendelsohn) proposes to partner with Luke in a string of spectacular bank robberies – which will place Luke on the radar of ambitious rookie cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper). Avery, who has to navigate a local police department ruled by the menacing and corrupt detective Deluca (Ray Liotta), is also struggling to balance his professional life with his family life, which includes his wife Jennifer (Rose Byrne) and their infant son AJ. The consequences of Avery’s confrontation with Luke will reverberate into the next generation, where their two sons must face their shared legacy. Co-written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ is out now. Mahershala Ali, Emory Cohen, Dane DeHaan, Gabe Fazio, Bruce Greenwood, and Harris Yulin also star. My interview with Eva Mendes for the film can be read here.
Was this story, ‘The Place Beyond the Pines,’ something you had talked about with Derek Cianfrance on ‘Blue Valentine’?
Ryan Gosling: Yeah. When Derek and I were making ‘Blue Valentine’ I had shared with him a fantasy that I had about robbing banks, and how I thought there was a way to get away with it, and that if I wasnt so afraid of jail I might do it - but I guess that means I didn’t have a lot of confidence in my plan (laughs). And he said, “That’s crazy, I just wrote a script about that.” So it felt like it was meant to be. Both of us felt like it was our idea, but then we realised that this guy in Tel Aviv has been doing it for years – with great results (laughs).

Was watching Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Blue Valentine’ something that pulled you towards ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’?
Eva Mendes: Oh, yes. I was really intrigued with ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ because it was Derek Cianfrance’s follow-up to ‘Blue Valentine,’ and I loved ‘Blue Valentine.’ I actually demanded a meeting with Derek after I saw that film (laughs), I was like, “I need to meet this director!” (laughs) And I kind of forced him to sit down and have coffee with me. I was like, “Um, I don’t know what you’re doing next. But can I please be involved somehow?” And that was even before I knew there was a script around for ‘The Place Beyond the Pines.’ I just knew after seeing ‘Blue Valentine’ that this director was going to want raw, and he was going to basically give me the experience I’ve been craving all these years, you know?

Ryan Gosling & Kristen Scott Thomas Feature In New Pics From Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Only God Forgives’
Mar 20th
Following their pairing on ‘Drive,’ my favourite film of 2011, director Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling are collaborating again on the revenge-tingered thriller ‘Only God Forgives.’ In the film, Gosling plays Julian, the son of a Florida-based crime syndicate boss (Kristen Scott Thomas), who is plying the drug trade in Thailand with his brother. When his addicted sibling gets involved in a murder and gets tangled up with a cop who calls himself the Angel of Vengeance, Gosling’s character, who is proficient in mixed martial arts, is compelled to seek revenge on behalf of his mother. Look out for ‘Only God Forgives’ later this year. The official synopsis for the film can be read below. The three new images arrive online via Allocine.
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When JULIAN’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.
